@Jodywithawhy
@Jodywithawhy 3 года назад
I appreciate you trying to help, but it almost sounds as if you’re saying people who have a degree are too good to be enlisted. The process for joining as an officer is a long process, and not guaranteed at all. They are also only taking the best of the best. There’s people who have graduated college and cannot find employment, especially within the field they got their degree. To tell them to respect themselves and not seek a credible career opportunity is not really helpful. I know you meant this with good intentions, but there’s too many unemployed college graduates who can use a job right now.

@@Jodywithawhy You make good points here. Of course no offense meant here. By "respecting yourself" statement I meant that each and every person ought to reach higher to give themselves the best possible chance in life. The requirement of a Bachelor's degree to become an officer is there for a reason: it is the bare minimum to be a US military officer. If you have this degree, after the 4 grueling years of study, after the student debt, you owe it to yourself to strive towards the officer pathway which, by its nature will give you bigger rewards in pay and respect and even safety. By joining in the enlisted ranks with a Bachelor's degree you are essentially neglecting this major advantage that you have over other people who are without a Bachelor's degree. You are ignoring your own sacrifices to obtain this highly-valuable degree by settling for less as an enlisted guy. Getting a commission is harder than getting enlisted for sure. But its not significantly harder. I have seen pilots with an almost useless Bachelors degree in communications working for the Navy. Keep striving and don't settle for less inside or outside the USAF!

Click on that and you will see find a recruiter. There it will ask if you’re health professions, select yes and then put in the zip code you’re located. That will show you your nearest HP recruiter. You can speak with your recruiter about getting in touch with an officer recruiter. If you’re trying to do it, I would recommend you have a three way call with both recruiters. If the officer recruiter could use you, they’ll say the can, and if they couldn’t most likely they’ll say stay on your enlisted path for now. After you join, you can apply for becoming an officer after 1 year.
@airforceofficerpodcast
@airforceofficerpodcast 2 года назад
so long as everything else is good to go (resume, medical, AFOQT, etc) having a degree in computer science greatly increases your chances of being selected. i’d say go for it if being an officer is what you truly want.

Hello, as someone who just applied for commissioning (SLECP-O) and an enlisted member of the Air Force, I would like a reason as to why the Air Force selects 70/30 civilian to AD for OTS. I never recommend people enlisting first and try to commission later just because of what OTS actually is; a place filler. I always recommend USAFA or ROTC. That is your best and safest route for commissioning. Thanks for your time in advance.
@Jodywithawhy
@Jodywithawhy 3 года назад
They’re definitely the best route because that’s where your chances are the highest. The third highest chance is enlisted to officer. It’s no guarantee, but the chances are better vs applying as a civilian.
@CallsignOutdoors
@CallsignOutdoors 3 года назад
I can agree with that, I’m just wondering what their reason is behind that ratio of 70/30 civilian to AD for OTS. Because for someone that reads that in the AFI, that tells me they like to pull way more civilians than they do enlisted.
@Jodywithawhy
@Jodywithawhy 3 года назад
That is a huge pool of the officer body, but there’s so many civilian applicants, it makes it extremely hard for civilians to get qualified and accepted. They’d better their chances through programs like ROTC, Academy and enlisted to officer programs vs applying directly as a civilian.
@airforceofficerpodcast

I’m nervous but I have a bachelors and master’s degree and the process for officer route hasn’t really been explained to me. I’ve been doing my own research but honestly it’s not really clear how to go from civilian to officer . I saw the option to apply to the USAF Academy , or do ROTC, and the option to go from enlisted to officer by submitting a packet . What to do? Will applying push my ship date back ?
@Jodywithawhy
@Jodywithawhy Год назад
Hello. The academy doesn’t accept applicants over the age of 23. I’m assuming if you have your masters, you probably won’t qualify there. Both the ROTC and Academy are for people who don’t have their degree, and are looking to leverage those programs to get one. Going from civilian to officer is tough for anyone. If you were to start that process, it could take anywhere from 12-18 months to get in. My recommendation would be to continue with your current ship date and then try to commission from within. I made a video where I interviewed a friend who commissioned from within. It might help. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yc1tCZGfyjk.html

I do understand that such an individual, has to submit an application before the age of 31 and by the age of 33 he/she should have graduated from undergraduate pilot training school/ Initial flight training school. I also understand that an enlisted guy that wants to become an officer would need to complete his contract before submitting an application to become an officer. Hey man I’m joining enlisted with a degree .My Undergraduate GPA wasn’t that high .Do you have any knowledge on when I will be able to apply to commission and if my GPA would be a problem ?
@Jodywithawhy
@Jodywithawhy 3 года назад
They usually prefer a 3.3 or higher. If you don’t have that, it will be tough. But what you can do is get your Masters while in, and get yourself a better GPA. The masters plus the better GPA will really help your chances of getting selected.
@airforceofficerpodcast
@airforceofficerpodcast 2 года назад
GPA is only one piece of the puzzle. if you can demonstrate that you have the potential to lead effectively through your personal and professional experiences, pass the AFOQT, and be medically qualified, that can make up for a poor GPA.

@Jodywithawhy

You’d still need the medical waivers that route too. Whichever route you take, you’d have to be qualified medically by MEPS.

You can enlist and be in the Air Force within 3-6 months. Then apply for an officer after one year of enlistment. From within the Air Force, the commissioning process is a little bit quicker. Still not a guarantee though, because it’s still very competitive.

it takes a long time to become an officer. period. - 4 years through USAFA for those who don’t already have their degree. - minimum of 3 years through AFROTC for those who are working on their first or second bachelors or graduate degree (2 years with significant military experience) - minimum of 1 year through OTS for those who already have their bachelors degree
