In this video I talk about how to fight and land larger trout, these tips especially help when using a nymphing rod and lighter tippet. I also touch on things I see a lot of people do that usually cause them to lose bigger fish, such as high rod angles or rushing fish, I see a lot of people try to land a big fish when it’s nowhere near ready to be netted, stay calm and steady and that trophy fish will make its way in the net! Again as in all my videos and support of a local buddy, most of my gear I use and all of my fly tying material comes from Soque River Outffiters with Big T fly fishing click the link below to shop online or visit Big T at the fly shop in Clarksville GA!

Big browns can be tough to land, it could be anything from the rod not quite protecting the tippet good enough, bad spool of tippet or depending on the size of the fly. Super small flies don’t have much hook to hold a fish, so sometimes a bigger fish on a tiny fly if they aren’t hooked just right they’ll come off if, as far as breaking them off it could be their teeth cutting the tippet when they head shake, tail hitting the tippet. There are multiple things that could happen with a big brown on small flies and tippet. But something that could help is maybe find what angles lead the fish the best and which angles keep it from shaking its head as much, and keep the rod in those positions the whole time, and don’t make drastic changes when fighting fish, adjusting rod angles is helpful, but overdoing it or adjusting them faster than usual could cause the hook to come out

Helpful! Didn’t realize I was making all the mistakes you described. Guilty!

Second one was fighting a while too and fought similarly although he was shaking his head a bunch and rolling a lot in deep and scraping his side on bottom. Hook just pulled out idk? Thing I think I did wrong was he was facing upstream when hook pulled out and I put side pressure upstream. I think that’s what pulled the hook.

Thanks. So heart broken. Hooked two massive browns on light tippet and small flies. One broke bc I tried to out heat on him bc was in a deep pool and after initial run just went to the bottom like a cat fish and was just swimming at bottom for about 15-20 mins. Tried to out a little heat and tippet popped. What could I do in that scenario better? Second one, was fighting a while to

Jacob - Great video! Keep them coming! I really enjoy how you discuss not only techniques, but also the equipment you're using including rods, reels, flies, tippet, etc. I look forward to my trip to GA in December and my guided trip with you. Let's get some BIG trout like the ones in this video.
