i pretty much have my palette arranged the way you do with one necessary exception for me. i am partially red green color blind so i have my greens as far away from my reds and browns as possible so i don't accidentally end up with any green faces! :-D i use the meeden 24 palette and find that it is a perfect size for working on my small desk but with a good selection of colors. very reassuring info... thanks!

I don’t know how you keep to a small box. I’ll only use a few when actually doing a painting but when I go out to paint, I don’t want to leave say, the nickel azo yellow behind, incase I need it. And Smalt from W&N is just so lovely I might actually need to use it one day 😂 I think perhaps my problem is I’m in love with the colours more than I am with a finished painting. I’m discovering that I’m ocd about the palettes too… maybe I’m just ocd in general. I love the way you paint, and the way you do your loose watercolour indicator for the box. I get the ruler out and draw perfect boxes. I don’t go over the lines. Yup… ocd for sure!‘ I’ve got to loosen up 🥴

I just purchased a new palette a couple weeks back and really appreciate this video, along with your recommendations regarding green. I love discovering what colors I can mix it is fascinating and so pretty. I am not a professional artist nor trained, but self-taught. So, my sap green and hooker's green are coming out of the palette because I know I do not need them, they are more like chocolate a comfort. Besides, that opens up two slots for other colors should I want to replace them. I love your tutorials, Karen they are so informative.

Hi Karen. I am new to watercolour.... do you buy empty palettes and then fill the pans with paint from tubes? I am sorry for what probably is a very obvious question! Your paints look so creamy and completely different to my set (from a well known make). Thank you for all your inspiring videos.

It occurred to me the other day that to help me learn colour mixing, I would make my own circular colour wheel palette, with plastic half pans. Stick the pans on a circular bit of plywood, and fill them with the primary, secondary, and tertiary colours. Haven't made it yet, as I'm still wondering if it's worth it. I think it would speed up my colour mixing, as it's layout solves the confusion of looking at a bunch of rectangular pans in a grid pattern. I'd know immediately the complementary colours etc.
@KarenRiceArt

Sounds really innovative. I love colour mixing ideas. Using a limited palette can help with confusion. Just using 3 primary colours 😊

How can a novice assess what paint colors are cool vs. warm? For example, beyond the obvious color (yellow is warm, blue is cool) within each isolated color there are cools and warm ones. How can I tell the difference? Labels on tubes do not tell this information. I would like to split my palette to have the warms and cools of EACH color on one side and on the other. Thank you.

If your adding tube paint to your boxes do you fill the half pans or just squeeze into the slots.

I love particular greens like green apathite genuine, undersea green and perylene green. Green gold is very beautiful for landscapes in spring, but I think I can mix it from primary colours. Maybe I could mix a sort of perylene green from Payne's gray and a dark green. I'm disappointed from cascade green...I don't see special effects like green apathite. I think that it's granulation is a bit flat.

Hi Karen, I was lucky enough find some used heavy enamel watercolour boxes on facebook market place. One was a rowney field box with half round water bottle in and it takes quarter pans. where can I get replacement pans for this box?

Great find Andy. I am not sure they sell 1/4 pans. I would just fill up the empty pans with tube paint. Hope this was helpful.

I have got loads of tubes of paint as they were bought for me for my birthday presents. I never knew that you could put them in a palate , I was really surprised, don’t they stick to the lid ? Do you find tube paint or block paints more economical, at the moment I am buying cheap tube paints with being a beginner. I have read that for the next step Winsor and Newton cotman are a good buy, do you agree or would you suggest another make . Thankyou
@mouseketeery
@mouseketeery 3 года назад
When you fill the pans from tubes, you need to leave the box open to allow the paints to dry and 'set'. Depending on the formulation of the paint, this can be quite a number of days. You can still use the paints at home when they're still soft, it just might not be wise to take the palette out and about until you know they've dried. Tubes work out more economical in the long run (price per ml), but the initial outlay is higher, so you have to calculate what will work out best for you - cheaper now or over time. My personal suggestion would be to get the best paints you can afford (within reason, of course!) but not to buy loads of them at once - replace your cheap ones gradually.

Hi Kim... I always purchase tube paint, mainly because I want to be able to make large washes and find this difficult with pans. So you can make up your own palette now with the tube paint. It is a great idea as mouseketeery suggested, to let you paints dry off a bit before closing the lid. Btw... Winsor & Newton Cotman and Daler Rowney Aquafine are both great paints to buy! Have fun building your very own palette!

I bought an empty box by schmincke, very expensive. The pans don't stay in place even if I try to bend the metal tabs around them. I think that little magnets could be a better option. I'd like to buy another metal box, with about 24 pans, but I see that they are all built in the same way

I add a little dot of poster putty on the bottoms of all of the pans in my palette. It really does help keep them in place and you can still remove them when necessary.
