I agree with what Dave said. If you’ve never done a garage door opener, Find a family member or friend that might need one replaced. Or just buy one and assemble it and take it apart and assemble 10 times. Point your safety sensors at each other and you can run it up and down and practice programming it Then also you’ll have extra parts if you do need something.
I think this young man should find a small door company, walk in and say i want to learn about the door industry. Tell them you have a job that already pays your bills and would be willing to be an assistant on jobs when they may need an extra hand. Maybe just a few calls a week until the both realize that this is a good fit. Remember as a door technician, you must think you are a problem solver. Experience goes a long way in this field and working for a gray beard will be invaluable when starting out. If/when the gray beard is ready to hang it up, you could have a deal to buy the business/phone number and you will be able to say we worked together for x number of years which will give customers a better feeling when hiring you. In the service industry, word of mouth is king. This route keeps your financial situation covered until you figure out what direction you want to go in life. At 22, you have many options and are still learning the ways of the world.
I found if you are able to and you are using a diy opener it can speed up the process if you are able to put the opener together at your place, gives you more time for tear out and clean up and I felt less rushed considering the customers were outside watching me work and I was able to make things look nice/ make adjustments in the span of a couple hours
