That is a beautiful Ukulele Jodi. One thing that will help you when using Liquitex heavy bodied artist Acrylics in the future is to know they are designed to be thinned and mixed as needed to get the colors and consistency needed for each painting project(fine art canvas & other medium type painting projects). I generally use them with a painters palette. I put each of the colors I am likely to be mixing on different parts of the 🎨. I use water to thin them. Liquitex also makes Liquitex retarder medium that improves flow and slows down the drying time. You can thin the opaque white down a good amount and still have it be opaque. Also, If you have not done so already, a light spray of Clear Matte finish or Satin will keep them looking nice even longer. You can get cans of Clear Matte finish at most art supply stores. The beautiful painting you did would only need a very light coat of clear to protect it. Keep up the great work!

Reading your comment gave me the idea of a Bob Ross style paint job. I think you mentioning a painter's palette did it👍

That uke looks great, and I don't mind the headstock at all. I've never painted a uke and seriously doubt I ever will. I am not artistic, nor am I patient when it comes to things like that. But I have nothing but admiration for those of you who can see something in your mind's eye and then make it real. Holy smokes.

Does the paint affect the sound? Maybe a black sharpie outline around the color on the head.
@girlmeetsuke2980
@girlmeetsuke2980 5 лет назад
Good question. Technically, yes. I think adding to the soundboard (Especially with, thick, heavy body paint) will deaden the sound a tiny bit. I thought about doing a sound comparison but really didn’t want to put the same strings back on.

Not painted a ukulele though have sanded the front face of the headstock on my Octopus soprano as I wanted a cleaner look. Thinking of also reshaping the top of the headstock and maybe (if I can come up with a design I like) paint the face of the body.

Hello Jodie, yeep.... you did a really nice job. For me this Luna Uke looks far better painted then unpainted 🤹‍♀️. Would like to know more about the Color you use. Is it a Kind of acrylic Color, so you get an effect like a gloss finish? Have you experiences with using paint pens with varnish? Kind regards and be blessed from Germany 🌺

You may want to do a layer of gesso first. It acts as a primer so the paint will stick.

Hi Jodi, well you've made it extremely summer of love now. Almost psychedelic. You'll have to learn some Hippy songs now, could start with " Hi ho silver lining " or maybe " mellow yellow ". I met Donovan Leith once at an Incredible string band gig. Definitely gives off a sixties vibe man. 😊

Mixing with water is fine just don’t do more that 1/8 parts as it can mess with the binder and the paint might not stick to the wood as well. Also liquitex and golden sell soft body acrylics and golden has a fluid line which is probably better for your application use. Amazing job on the ukulele too!

I never painted an Ukulele, but I did glued velcros on the top of my guitar so I can attach a melodica to it. Hey, it's a start, right? I actually bought my first Ukulele yesterday for around $90 (I am waiting for it to be delivered) but I would still be scared to paint it. Here where I live (Brazil) $90 is not that inexpensive. It was also the price of my (only) guitar. Maybe when I graduate (be able to afford) better quality instruments I will risk to personalize my first ones. You certainly inspired me to consider it. :)

That’s a great looking pain job. I’ve never painted a ukulele before. I don’t think the plastic ones I’ve got would hold paint very well and the one I’ve got that’s laminate top has too many sentimental memories to alter it. I might give it a go, but it would be a ukulele I bought specifically to be painted.

Your ukuleles are beautiful! The colours are so crisp and happy! I've been meaning to paint my ukulele but have been nervous about messing up. I think I would have a little more control using paint markers but I was curious if maybe you had any advice on what kind of paint markers would be ideal for the surface of ukuleles?

Lookin good! Sounds good too. I haven't painted one, but I am considering stripping my Luna concert and trying to lighten the sound board so the etchings pop better. I also have a spruce merlin I'm tempted to wood burn. I need far more practice to pull that off though.

Wow, this uke looks so much better painted than it did before! Good color choices to give it that real 1970s feel. That's such a good idea to use a stock photo and Photoshop to plan a design. I have not painted a ukulele. I've always been too afraid to try for fear that the results will be ugly.

Jodi - Good job. Love the body. I have never painted a uke, but I have cleaned, sanded, stained, clear-sprayed, and hand-rubbed with mineral oil a 1950s Regan uke for a friend who bought it when she started college in 1950. With new strings, it looked and played probably better than when she bought it. My reward was tears, hugs and laughter from her. I am looking forward to your M600 sound comparison. Thank you. Rick

I've never painted a ukulele before. I don't think I have the courage to do it hahah. I really like your art work on this one. Does painting an ukulele affects it's sound/ resonance? There are different opinions about it out there so I'm curious to know what you think... maybe on your next video you should do a sound comparison with before and after painting it sound samples 😉 Love your channel by the way!
@girlmeetsuke2980

That's what a peace and love ukulele SHOULD look like. Well done! I love the idea of painting/customizing a ukulele. I'm definitely going to do it someday. I like the uke building kits too. My brother is getting married soon and I thought it would be a great gift to build a pair of ukuleles as a wedding present. Each one could be tailored to the bride and groom's interests and also have themes of things they do together. They don't play, but they would still look good on the wall. Maybe they'll be inspired to play a little. You inspire me. I inspire them. We'll see what happens.
