I stopped dyeing my hair a year ago when my grays really began coming through .... I have very ashy brown hair, with a few auburn streaks, and I get so many compliments on my hair now 😂 I always hated my hair color, but the gray streaks really do bring out the best in it.
I always hated my mousy blonde and used highlights. Now I am turning quite white and depending on the lighting, season and perspective, these strands look super light blonde. Plus suddenly some strawberry blonde is coming through (?!). 😅 It looks like a continuation of my intentional highlights. But it is super scary as well, not gonna lie. 😅 It feels like my youth is finally slipping away.
When comparing to your earlier videos, I'm fascinated watching your eyes starting to really pop as your darker hair reaches eye level. The difference is striking.
I agree! In fact, I’d even suggest tinting the lighter parts of the hair to colour match the natural colour. The tint doesn’t require bleach and can be “semi-permanent”, just in case Ellie Jean changes her mind m.
We should embrace this haircolour and we need a pretty name for it. Language is powerful. Also, its actually hard to get this colour artificially and keep it cooltoned, its special and beautiful!
I read somebody call it „moonshine blonde“ (the dark blonde version of this hair colour) and i‘m obsessed with this name 😄 It’s all about how you market it haha
a lot of people in Poland have this hair colour (including me) and we usually just call it dark blonde. it's surprising and sad to learn that people call it such awful names in other places edit: we also call a person with such hair 'szatyn' from French 'châtaigne' - 'chestnut'. szatyn encompasses everything from dark blonde to light brown.
I'm Polish-American and my husband always calls my hair "Polish brown" 😅 I feel like for a color that so many people call dull or drab, that we actually have very lovely and unique ash tone hair!
Polish-American here, too! I had white blonde hair as a child and it has darkened over the years to an ash blonde. At certain times of year, it even has a bit of red/copper tones in the sun. I'm starting to get a few whitish/grey hairs in my early 40s, so I want to embrace the color I have now and enjoy seeing the color change as I age.
Growing up in the US, my mother characterized my naturally dark blonde hair as "dirty dishwater blonde". Not sure where she picked that up, she was a naturally platinum blonde her whole life. Some days I took that remark as a criticism and wonder now if it reflected a disappointment that my hair wasn't as beautiful as hers. She's gone now and I can't ask, but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt that she was just clueless how the choice and power of words can impact a child, even decades later!
Mother's shaming their daughters for not having the same hair is a sadly a common problem. My mother had a silky straight black hair and I had a curly "dirty" dark brown and spent a lot of my life thinking that my hair is "wrong" just because my mother for whatever reason thought her hair is the "standard" for a beautiful hair. It took me years to realise that my hair is normal too, that it's beautiful too, there's literally nothing wrong with my hair.
Yup, my mom was a hairdresser and my hair color was called dirty blonde and dishwater blonde. That's just what they called it, and didn't mean at all that it was liked or disliked. I don't like any of the common names used, even mousy brown, lol. The only description I claim is ash blonde. ;)
@@BoglimWrangler666brown? Your sight isn't good if you don't see the difference, or your mind aren't very intelligent so it can't perceive so many differences. Instead you only can remember two or max three hair colours. Sad.
I can speak to this very transition! A couple years ago I thoroughly embraced the “mushroom brown” look with ashy highlights all throughout my naturally darker, cool-toned, brown hair and I’ve probably received 150 positive remarks on my hair color since. Not exaggerating. It blows my mind how many people stop me at the grocery, etc. to say how much they like my hair color. I questioned it a little, at first, but the overwhelming responses tell me it must be quite flattering. If you’ve been on-the-fence about trying this look, I encourage you to take the leap. I also want to say that I love how many people are willing to stop a stranger and encourage them with a compliment. You never know when that might just make someone’s day or be the sunshine they need at a rough time. I’ve been working on doing this, myself…whenever a complimentary thought crosses my mind, speak it out loud, even to a stranger. I love this video so much!
Interesting how in countries with a majority of white/European population this haircolor is seen as dull, muddy and not so "desirable", here in Latin America with a majority of morenos and dark hair and eyed population (either light or dark skinned) don't care about the hue of the hair, if it's light enough it will be always seen as a beautiful blonde haircolor (even if the hair is actually brown lol). Of course this is due colonialism, colorism and eurocentrism, but still wanted to share this fact 😊
No culpes al eurocentrismo, colorismo o colonialismo de que no podes percibir mas de 10 colores, hay muchos tipos de marrón, este color específico tiene muchas variaciones incluso dentro de la misma persona, puede ir de castaño claro a rubio medio
This level of hair can have some warmth, in my opinion. I'm an autumn (probably soft), and I have it. I was dark golden blonde as a child and then started coloring my hair at age 15 as it started to darken to a level 6 because I thought it was ugly. I was so wrong! It's impossible to replicate with dye and I couldn't get my natural color back until I grew it out. Probably My favorite description is light neutral-golden brown, or bronde. It doesn't have the richness of brunette hair, but it's also not bright like blonde hair, and it's not very warm like red or auburn hair, but it's also not ashy either. It feels very diffused and muted, a neutral brown at the top with natural golden and strawberry highlights, but without enough intensity to make it a vibrant hair color.
same here. I think the most important feature of this hair colour is softness: it's neither light nor dark, not very cold and not very warm. One thing we can say for sure is that it's not deep. And as such, I think it mostly belongs to soft colour types and I'd bet it mostly appears in soft autumns and soft summers.
this sounds like my hair too! I'm a true autumn, and wear soft autumn colors often, due to my hair. I used to be (golden) blond as a kid, now the top layer of my curls is mousy brown, my lower layer is dark brown but quite cool toned, and I have natural golden highlights overall. my hair color is very multidimensional and looks like the hair of 3 different people. in one color theory video I finally heard that the multidimensionality of hair is typical for autumns and everything clicked. I used to hate it during my teenage years and dyed it all kinds of colors but it always ended up looking like I am wearing a wig. I am glad I have this natural color now and I love it on myself and others. it's subtle and works for ethereal essence perfectly
I agree! I think any season can have the look of “mousy brown” hair. I am a spring but was also blonde as a young child and used to often struggle with accepting my in-between shade of hair. To me, “mousy brown” refers to any in-between shade of light brown/dark blonde
@@maggienewman870 definitely not any season, not any clear season for sure because that's a decidedly muted colour. Not any light or dark season bc that colour is by definition in the middle on this scale
I just did this! It took two year to grow my hair out to it natural dark blonde! Sometimes I still find it hard to be confident, but with the right haircut, it really helps and there is something about seeing your natural hair on your head! It’s been a really big growing period to not rely on Hollywood bleach blonde hair for my confidence! Starting to love the authentic Me
"Summer hair" is a great description. Mine is sort of mixed mouse, with light and dark tones, and it gets much lighter with sun and sea swimming. I have always loved it, and didn't dye it until I started to get some white at the temples recently. I literally only blend in those bits.
Im doing the same and recently decided to grow out ny natural hair color! Last i checked it was a mousey brown and was dirty blondish as a child. I have been dying my hair copper reddish for well over a decade and never wanted to go back. But recently ive decided to embrace my natural hair. Im actually very curious and excited to see what it looks like and looking forward to healthier hair and less time and money spent on dying my hair 🤗 So cool that many of us are embracing our natural hair. Thanks for the well timed video!
Thank you for this! I've been growing out my mousy hair for almost 2 years and just cut out almost all of the previous color treated ends. I've been receiving more compliments on my seagreen eyes a LOT more recently since I've been embracing my natural and also dressing in cooler tones to compliment my true/cool summer tones!
Super useful! I'm a soft summer, used to be gold blonde as a kid and I'm now a dark mousy blonde in the winter with natural golden sun bleaching in the summer, which turns the ends of my hair kind of reddish. I've always tried to lighten it, because I like to think of myself as blonde but after only a few months the gold/red always comes out. Not being able to totally bleach my hair because it's curly and it would cause too much damage, the tips to embrace mousy brown were so helpful!!! Finally I can focus on the fact that it looks good for my face and color, rather than fitting into one of the boxes "blonde" or "brunette".
Hi Ellie!! As a soft summer growing out my natural, I found this so encouraging and helpful to continue with the process! I wanted to mention that adding in some very subtle fine lowlights throughout your blonde that match your roots (or slightly lighter) could blend the ends and feel softer as you continue to grow out your hair :) especially with a lob cut, I think it would look so beautiful with your classic features!
So glad someone is finally talking about this! All women my age and older were always told mousy hair is boring, dull, nerdy and you have to dye it etc. I dyed for many years but gave up as grey took over. My hair is dry enough due to aging without adding bleach to it too. In natural hair you see so many tones and shades in different lights that you just don't see in dyed hair (unless you want to spend a lot of time and money recreating it!)
I’m on this journey at the age of 31 after colouring my hair darker for 15+ years. My hair is naturally cool and ashy and I don’t like the red tones when my colour fades. I’m finally ready to embrace my natural look and I’m not mad about the time and money I’ll save giving up hair appointments 😊
I consider my hair to be sandy blonde. When I was younger, it was the color of dry sand and now that I'm older it is the color of wet sand. I like the description of sandy because there is room for color variation. I don't dye my hair but I can imagine that if you have a color similar to wet sand then adding some highlights the color of dry sand would be flattering and keep the tones in the same family.
At the start of this year I went from platinum blonde, back to my natural light brown hair and honestly I feel like it probably suited me better all along 😅
I'm currently 1 and a half years into growing out my natural mousy hair and I don't think I will ever go back! The colour is just so amazing and it's crazy healthy. It really does make your other features pop! It's wild that I thought blonde looked best on me for most of my life when it was washing me out
I have already gone through this journey of growing out my died hair to let my natural medium/dark ash blonde hair color come back (I'm a light summer btw.). It took years as my hair is down to my hip bones and very healthy. I finally learned to love my natural hair color and I love to show it to the world. It really does look best.
I was a towhead until I was 9-10 yrs old then it would get summer streaks . In my 30’s it got very dark with gold and red undertones . For about 10 yrs I highlighted it like it use to be when I was younger . Then Covid happened and my hair started turning silver . I loved it ! It was the best match for my skin , it lightened my hair without spending $ and hours to achieve it . Having said all that embrace your natural beauty . During my highlighting yrs it was “yellow” but I could t see that it didn’t suit me because I wanted to look like I did when I was younger . It’s very freeing to embrace your natural assets.
I've never dyed mine. I just threw on winter colored clothing, looked tired and got frustrated without really understanding the why of it. The color systems have definitely helped me embrace it.
Oh Ellie Jean, it's not dirty, mousy or muddy blond. It's Caramel Coloured Hair. 🙂 Though I do like your term "Old Money Blond." My husband calls me "Honey Hair" as a term of affection. My hair is this colour - or at least similar. Depending in the light, it can look blond, dark brown or even slightly strawberry blond. At the ripe old age of 34, I love it. I dyed it as a teenager and it looked terrible. I'm never dying it again. I'm not going to spoil its natural beauty. xx ❤
I use to be a bright blonde when i was younger. As ive gotten older, it's turned darker, more ashy... i hated it and dyed my hair a cool berry red. Though that red color really fits me, ive been red for like 4 years now and i suddenly have the urge to grow out my natural and embrace it. I feel awful for how ashamed i was of my natural hair...
My hair is dark blonde, and I finally decided to embrace the color God gave me after years of dyeing it various shades of blonde. Keep going! It’s so worth it.
Not to go against Ellie-I love you Ellie!!-but I did find the right box dye to give you a cool medium blonde-light brown(depending on your current hair color). It’s revlon medium ash blonde and it’s only like $3 at most retailers. They also have a dark ash blonde if you want it slightly darker. If you have kind of a yellowy blonde, but are naturally mousy brown it basically tones you back to your natural shade. It’s amazing if you don’t want to wait for it to grow out. This is not a sponsored post haha. It just took me years to find and it’s so cheap I tell everyone about it
In germany we call it "Strassenköterblond" which translates to "stray dog blonde" 😅 Ive been getting better at embracing my natural hair, I dont hate the color anymore. I just think dying your hair is fun and the blonde looks great on you! The hairdresser did an amazing job, my own dyed my hair orange 😭 Im still growing it out
I was a white blonde as a kid turned golden blonde as I got older. I hated my colour and for years I dyed it a ton of fashion colours. I started getting sick of it and started growing out my bleached bits (only a couple shades lighter to get a purple grey to appear) and embracing my natural colour. I love it now! I got so so inspired by Daphne Bridgestone since she is stunning and a honey blonde. :)
To make the transition of growing out your hair easier, you can get a semi or demi-permanent glaze over your blonde ends. I did it when growing out my hair and it was much more flattering.
How did my algorithm know I was struggling with this exact issue lately and your video came up?! So scary! LOL Yep, beautiful blonde as a child, then gray/dirty/mousey hair since. I have been highlighting it since a teenager. when I do more than 6 months, even my close friends and family tell me I look sick with my natural, yes, the people that love me. What's a woman to think? So it's been going gray and I think I am ready to go natural. ug, it's hard when your entire life you have been a "blonde"!
I just wanted to give a mention that soft autumn can be a little "mousy" too!, my hair has slightly more depth than a cooler season but theres definitely a muted quality to my hair which I share with a lot of summers. I think a slight difference is that in some lights my hair can look ashy and in other lights very reddish which may be some of that neutral color season stuff coming to play.
I'm currently growing out my hair too. I had done this once, but went very radical and buzzed all the bleached hair off when I got 2cm of regrowth. I will not do that again, because as liberating as it was, I don't wanna go through that phase of having hair that stands straight up and away from my head anymore. My hair does this until it hits the 7cm mark (which is when it starts to form waves again) and it just looks CRAZY. My hair isn't quite as ashy/desaturated as yours, but would still be considered "mousy". Mine is more like... take a red-orange, put it to low-medium value and take away about three quarters of its saturation. So you can still see warmth in it in full spectrum lighting, but cool lighting will fully take it away and make it look both darker and more "frosted". Whereas warm lighting of course adds warmth to it and makes it look like a hazelnut color. The truth sits somewhere in between, so maybe... frosted hazelnut? If it lightens by the sun it will turn bronzy to soft honey blonde. That mixture is actually quite nice which is one of the reasons why I wanna grow out my hair again. And this time also wanna grow my hair long again. For me this is way easier because I got a pixie cut rn and this won't take as long. It's still frustrating because I want two things at once xD I have short hair for 22 years now and I really don't wanna maintain it anymore. Short hair isn't that much of a breeze as many people tell you. Especially not if you have to wake up at 4 am for work and just HAVE to style your hair. If my hair was long, I could just put it up/back and that's it. I can't wait for my natural hair color to surround my face AND for my hair to be long enough to just put it up with ease. I'm basically fed up with bleaching my roots every month, constantly cutting the hair, styling it each morning... simplicity often times really carries the greater joy...
Agreed - I was very blonde until 13 or so and mousy hair makes my face disappear! I also have quite fair eyebrows - recently swapped highlights for full head colour - suits my Dramatic nature 😂
Sometimes it's actually product buildup and hard water making hair look so dull and dark! I switched to all clean products and no 'cones + a shower head filter, and I couldn't believe how light and bright my natural color is, in reality. And my hair doesn't feel weighed down anymore, either.
My sister is a true Summer with dark mousy blonde hair.she is currently in the process of growing it out from dying her hair jet black for years. She would like to have her natural colour with a balayage on top of medium ash blonde. She has blue/grey eyes and I think her light contrast and cool , muted colouring would pair well with a medium ash blonde
I think sometimes (me included) are super influenced by what people say. My mum and husband like it blonde and end up going back to it because of that. It’s up to me to not ask what people think. Xx
I'm have natural mousy hair, and I think I lean into the soft summer category. I have never been able to rock blonde, so I've stayed far away from it. I'm too fair skinned I think. My mum is also a natural mousy, but she's dyed it blonde for many many years now and it looks great on her. I think she's a true summer, she looks particularly great in turquoise and bright blue clothing. I don't. I've had all colours under the sun in my hair, but have found that reddish, copper tones works the best for me despite me probably being a soft summer (although I'm not sure that I am, my eyes are blue/green with a discrete golden ring because of central heterochromia). My hair had some honey tones in it when I was younger, but now it's just an ashy, cool-toned brown with grey hairs mixed in, so I'm not fond of my natural colours either. It washes me out, makes me look a bit... dead. 😅
I am very fair with green eyes and light hair. I have been getting highlights since I was 16 and I just this year stopped getting it done. My hair is very ashy, and I literally just assumed I was a brunette. Imagine my shock when my hair is growing out and it's...blonde. It's not the white blonde highlights ofc but I was actually excited to lean into my brunette era and I don't even have dark hair!
Yes I have mousy brown hair. I used to add blonde highlights to it, but my eyebrows are naturally super dark. I’ve been dyeing my hair black for 2 years now and people are shocked when they learn it’s not my natural color. 😂😂
You can avoid the green tint after dying blond hair brown if you dye it red first and then brown on top. But I'm not sure if the brown then comes out ashy or not
I have that haircolor and I love it with my life, Maybe I don't consider it boring and ugly bc I'm a latina, there's just a few people with that color here in my country
I have this color. I’ve grown it out very long many times over the years when I wanted to stop coloring. It looks horrid. It almost looks gray even though it’s not. It also makes my face look ghastly, like I’m half dead. The only part of my features that “pop” are the dark circles under my eyes. Not a good look at all. So yes, I either go lighter or darker.
Amber. Like a honey wheat color. My eyes and natural hair color are the exact same. I only noticed after going months during covid without having my hair dyed. At age 40! Anyone else like this?
I'm a soft autumn, but my natural hair is kinda this light brown (although the undertone is kinda bronze? it's red and green at the same time if this make any sense), is it possible?
My only issue, when I try to go natural, is I look sickly and pale with a greenish hue. Maybe it has to do with my skin tone. Platinum blonde suits me best. Maybe when I’m older I’ll be able to rock it.
Never dyed my hair and so proud and happy of myself. Peopole tell me i got beautiful hair and i like this feature of mine so much: ASH BLONDE, maybe true summer. When i was a child i was a Ginger head, then i turned dark blond, but i still am saturated, in some portions i'm more red and in others platinum blonde, in general dark blonde. I think it's important as women to embrace and enhance our natural beauty, they always told me i have an unnatural fair skin, like i'm dead or something, but i think of the Moon or Moonstone and i'm like HECK NO I'M ARISTOCRATIC, THAT'S IT. I'M NOT SHORT, I'M PETITE, THAT'S IT. I'M NOT SEXY? I'M CUTE, THAT'S IT: I'M TOO THIN EVEN TRYING TO GETTING WEIGHT? I' GOT A BALLERINA BODY. AND IT'S TOTALLY OKAY: I'm discovering also make up tecniques to follow the big doe eyes and dont make them more small syren, all because of my inner truth, essence and body type. Colors, styles and character are what define us first of all as human beings and then female dimension and energy. Ladies, you are gorgeous, dont have to change anything. Be satisfied with who you are and what makes you unique!
As a soft autumn with unidentifiable light brown hair I feel a bit excluded. 😂 Nah, I can take some of your reasoning and use. 😊👍 I want to have some color in my hair because I feel it makes it easier to handle in everyday life.
I’ve really tried to love my natural dark blonde hair. Trust me, I’d be much happier saving the time and money spent in the salon bleaching it a lighter blonde. I even grew it out completely a few years ago to try and embrace it. But urgh…I just hate it. As long as I remember I’ve always hated my natural colour and wanted anything else. I look at old photos from when I was completely natural and feel like a plain Jane. I feel like it did nothing for me, it just made everything from my skin, to my eyes and clothes look dull. I can accept some root growth or a balayage but that’s as close to natural hair acceptance I think I’ll ever get sadly 😅
The words we use to describe this hair color are part of the problem. This is the only hair color we disparage. If we started calling brown hair s$@t brown, I think people would be upset. 😅
I’m always so unsure of my hair color. Overall, I’d say it’s a medium brown. I have some of those ashy brown tones around my face, but my hair as a whole also has golden and reddish tones too. And my eyebrows are ash blonde. I’m so confused!
have you thought about getting low lights in your hair? :) It might help you feel like you're not waiting another 2 years to get to where you want to :) A semi permanent colour won't damage it very much if at all :) I think it'd look lovely on you
Blonde strips your color, so dyeing your hair red first, and then going the ashy brown will help. Toning it will too. Or you can just wait, but if it’s driving you nuts, that’s the way to go.
My hair is confusing- it is definitely a weird not blonde but not quite dark enough to be brown. It also can appear golden sometimes but usually ashy- is it still mousy brown?
I just came from a video title The "natural blonde" Debate and hair color politics. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4xvgg8oZCSc.htmlsi=R2xNdVINDU39pu9B Where a White woman with this Light ash brown hair color speaks about why White Women dye their hair lighter. I was expecting this video to sort of be aimed at embracing this beautiful hair color, which it was to an extent but not in the way I expected. I am not a White person more specifically a White woman with this hair color. However, the conversation surrounding this hair color, the sort of semi-negative idea of it, or the fact that some woman dislike this color is very evident. I can almost draw a parallel between White women wanting and seeking lighter or blonde hair via bleach to Black women who want and seek straighter hair via relaxers. Both are done in a subconscious or conscious pursuance of reaching a beauty standard that can be very harmful.
Thanks for your helpful video. I find a point, why I and some other dark blonds/mousy brown people dye their hair is identity - i saw this video yesterday and in my opinion she nailed it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CXWQ6VMaZZk.htmlsi=DiO998WjDbHUrh-v
The hair at 2:28 is not dark blonde. It's a medium blonde. I have dark ash blonde hair. Most people call dark blonde "light brown" but it's incorrect. My hair is pretty much the darkest blonde shade. It's getting even more difficult to find an accurate representation of dark blonde as people can incorrectly label a color and then others will see it, but if you ask a hair colorist or consult swatches you will see what the difference is between blonde and brown. ❤
Blond is more then just a hair color\. 1) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4xvgg8oZCSc.html, 2) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LCeH19PIk8U.html
After YEARS of killing my hair with bleach, I decided to go natural (mousy brown) thanks to your advice 😊 just wanted to thank you as I feel so much better! Not only is my hair so much healthier, I feel like my features stand out more. Many family and friends have told me I should go blonde again but you have given me confidence to politely ignore them 😉
I stop dying my mousey hair 3yrs ago and it amazed me just how lovely my natural color suited my features( as silly as that sounds) but the pressure to dye my hair was put on me at a really young age.
I love mousy hair so much, i think it's one of the most beautiful things ever, i wish so much that women would stop covering it up with dye, it's such an elegant and pretty and subtle colour imo. i'm so excited to see you with fully natural haircolour!!
I’m a spring so not exactly the same situation, but I have hair a shade lighter (or so) than Taylor swift and I always used to get highlights. When I stopped and all the hair grew out, my hair was in completely different condition- to the point that my haircuts stay the same shape (with very few split ends) until my next haircut as opposed to becoming frayed or having breakage that would cause the uncolored lower layer to grow a lot more than the top half of my hair. You should also be able to do a lot more to style your hair once it is unprocessed, and not have damage. A really great leave in conditioner is the Living Proof repair one. Normal rinse out conditioner does not hold the moisture in after you dry it, not really. Super important step. Your hair will also be way more glossy. I never got any compliments on my hair when I was spending $250 every couple months on highlights but now I get compliments regularly. Healthy hair just ALWAYS looks better.
Yesss love all of this. What about autumns? I feel like this may apply more to summers & autumns… something about the “non color” screams muted seasons to me.
