Hey man! I appreciate the videos you make. Im also a GIS professional (graduated in Geography with emphasis in GIS). I am looking to either up my GIS skillset or get into development. For GIS, would you recommend the python/sql route for data management and automation or would you recommend the web and data visualization route? I've tinkered a little bit with leaflet in the past and had a great time with it, but I want to find something that will really make me marketable and easier to find a job

Thanks for watching! Tough question, depends on what you're more interested in. I would say going python/sql will probably keep you in the GIS career more and if you went web/data visualization you could end up moving out of GIS and into a software role that has nothing to do with GIS. Not sure what your goals are. Also, is there anything at your job currently that could be solved by either python/sql or web dev?

Hey thanks for the videos! I just got my first temporary gis analyst job through a family connection kind of a once a blue moon thing but I've fallen in love. I have a coding background from game development and started making scripts with arcpy and was made aware developers are a necessity. I've started taking online udemy courses to learn python, html, js, postgres... and so on. The course I am currently taking on udemy teaches how to use various languages and tools to make a shareable gis web application. I think it will be a great asset to add to my portfolio. My question is with your experience what are some neat personal projects that might apply to real world situations I could do on the side that you think might be beneficial for a portfolio?

Thanks for watching! I think working with REST API's is always useful. I've interacted with them a lot at work. Maybe you could use the twitter api and plot all tweets containing certain words or phrases on a map? Or maybe use the Strava API (app for recording activities on your phone) and plot the activities on a map. Or maybe you could make a utility website that allows a user to upload a file (like a picture from a phone) and it returns the lat/long. Anything along those lines I think would be beneficial for a portfolio. Oh, also ESRI has a Unity and Unreal SDK now for working with games... If you have a background in game development might be worth looking into it. I've never used it though - developers.arcgis.com/unreal-engine/

Hi Francis - do you have any recommendations for a good python course? I use arcpy alittle but figure I should get a better grounding for the actual language - did you do any of the paid online courses?

I recommend these 3 RU-vid playlists. They are all good, just pick which instructor/teaching style you prefer. I've watched them all and they have helped me learn the basics of Python. I did not do any paid courses. thenewboston - ru-vid.com/group/PL6gx4Cwl9DGAcbMi1sH6oAMk4JHw91mC_ Sentdex - ru-vid.com/group/PLQVvvaa0QuDe8XSftW-RAxdo6OmaeL85M Corey Schafer - ru-vid.com/group/PL-osiE80TeTskrapNbzXhwoFUiLCjGgY7
