Ohhhhh…note to self- no toothpaste…Now I know why all my first megas don’t set. Good video…a couple extra tips-a little less extreme pruning may give you more chances at a mega, prune with your hands, sharp cuts take longer to heal. Also, leave the lowest leaves on as long as you can..they’ll show you what the plant is lacking so you can make your adjustments in feeding. Lovin the vids farmer brown, Keep kickin Ass !!!

Thanks Porkchop and yes very excellent points and tips I appreciate it… if you lived closer to me I’d definitely be doing a Tomato interview with you!!! I have actually gone to a less extreme method myself where I allow most of the plant to grow except for the suckers on the inside of the plant in hopes of giving myself multiple chances at Megas and then going into the heavier pruning after a mega is set.

Thanks for the great info ! Do you recommend mulching around the base of the tomato plant ?
@GardenofGiants
@GardenofGiants Год назад
If you have a good drainage you can mulch around the base but tomatoes do not like wet feet so if your Soil holds water I would try to keep the mulch off to allow the Excess moisture to evaporate… Mulch can also be good at preventing soil from getting up onto the leaves of the tomato plant.

First attempt at a giant I have three stems currently taking any suckers out. Have one truss already but no mega do I remove this truss? Do the plant's need to be pinched out when at a certain height aswell? Also best video of watches on growing giant toms 👌🏻
@GardenofGiants
@GardenofGiants 3 месяца назад
Yes, pinch the first truss off as it’s going to do you know good your hope is one of the next few trusses will throw you a mega! The extreme trimming really starts after you get a mega. However, there is a caveat to that if you are not getting a mega to pop on your first three or four trusses, then I would really start some extreme trimming to see if you could force one. Again, once you get a mega, then you will start pinching off all new growth over a 3 to 5 day. Period. The last place you’ll pinch/cut will be the top. Thank you, and I really appreciate you watching !!

As chris has told me personally. The megas they aren't really for eating they are very bland. Most of these are for competitions

Do you differentiate between determinate and indeterminate?
@GardenofGiants
@GardenofGiants 7 месяцев назад
Indeterminate will continue to grow and really it will never stop so a lot of trimming is involved. Determinate means the plant will stop growing or dramatically slow down. It is still advisable that you do some trimming on a determinant however, there are not many giant varieties within the determinate. In fact, none that get really over 3 pounds that I know of so it would be a variety more for table fare.

you mentioned a high phosphorous fertilizer, do you also need lots of Potassium to grow big fruits too ? most tomato specific fertilizers are lower in Nitrogen and heavier/equal part P and K
@GardenofGiants
@GardenofGiants Год назад
Yes I use a 9-61-0 phosphorus fertilizer by (Raw) during flowering and then during fruit growth I use 4-12-12 along with potassium (0-0-50) to really amp the fruit up. I also use cal mag, boron, kelp, and Humic. All made by Raw… NPK industries

Great Video. When do you know you have something good going? Are they similar to pumpkins at all in that they will ramp up at a certain time?
@GardenofGiants
@GardenofGiants Год назад
Thanks I appreciate it!! Generally by day 30 you really start to have an idea if they’re doing good and then you’re going to get peak growth I believe between day 30 and 50…. And important sidenote generally speaking your day 40 numbers are going to be very close to halfway to your final weight.. so for instance if your pumpkin weighs 600 pounds on day 40 you’re going to roughly and with a 1200 pound pumpkin. Now there are exceptions to that rule and obviously it doesn’t account for heavy to chart or light to chart. Also if you can push your pumpkin closer to the hundred Day Mark versus the 80 to 90 Day Mark you could probably gain some as long as your pumpkin continues to grow all the way up to harvest date.
@jonathanjohnson1680
@jonathanjohnson1680 Год назад
@@GardenofGiants I'm sorry I meant are tomatoes similar to pumpkins in that way and how do you know one is special. My fault.
@GardenofGiants
@GardenofGiants Год назад
A tomato that has at least two or more blooms fused together that has a successful pollination is going to be a special one…. now the tomato can be anywhere from 2 pounds up but that has a lot to do with technique so once you get a fruit that you want to go all in with that’s when you start to execute a technique….. I have more videos coming about tomatoes so pay very close attention to the future ones.
