Tire grooving and siping with iron and blades 

Siping is actually to grab snow. It picks up snow, and snow-to-snow contact makes you stop or go faster. They also increase your surface area as they spread out under load.

Interesting practice even if I never have a need for tire modifications.

I have many hours siping tires on my semi and what worked best for me is let the cutting head sit on the tire block a second or two to heat up the tire block before pushing through. I also had a mini diamond sharpening hone about 3"X1" that I would use to touch up cutting edge.

Siping actually displaces the heat to make them last longer we do this to our asphalt circle track slicks yo displace heat in long 100 lap plus races so they last longer which means one less pit stop. We also sip and groove dirt track tires as well different sipes patterns will make the tire do different things heat wise and affect the car. And grooving just gives you more bite off the center of the corner

Someone 0:13 I know who swears by siping tires, does the whole tire except the inside and outside treads. Makes sense but i will try and see if it works well.

Do you need to balance the tire afterwards?
