Tiriba’s story, or the context for which it is played, has changed over time and there have been three distinct periods. A very long time ago, the Landuma people had a dancer who they called Tiriba when he was dressed in his dance costume. Each dry season Tiriba would assemble a group of percussionists to travel with him to present his dance in the villages. He did not do this to earn money. He just liked to dance to entertain villagers. After his show he would usually receive gifts from villagers. After Tiriba passed on there were no more Tiriba dancers. The women began to use this rhythm to celebrate the initia- tion of their daughters, as mothers and daughters danced together. Today Tiriba has become very popular in West Guinea. It is danced and played in all popular celebrations.
