You have to tear them down to make them small then only u will be a able to obtain this kind of texture

It's better to use acrylics as we have to make a thick paste and watercolor with probably not do that

No need to apply the glue on canvas as we already added it to the mix

You can use a cardboard instead of canvas but normal paper will not work
