Titan Generator - Will Not Start 

Doc, ye did it again. That will make someone an exellent generator. We deserve an easy one once in awhile.

Another great educational video James. I like the way you go through the examination process, very precise. A lot of “tubers” rush through it and never hit the fine points of problem solving. Wow! Killer find for $75. Likely frustrating for you in terms of content, but an easy one makes up for the extra cost that goes into others. Great camera work and detail as always. I didn't notice an audio issue early on and loved the school bus comparison!

Nice find and fix. I use a tea ball in my ultra sonic cleaner for the jets and small parts, helps me not to loose them. Another great video. Thanks

That's a nice find! - The kind of thing we never seem to see around here. I'm a bit mystified as to why anyone would cut off the tip of that shut of valve. It's known as an "anti-diesel valve" or "anti run-on valve" to bring the engine to a decisive stop when switched off - some lean burning engines tend to run on, firing without a spark, hence the reference to diesel, for a second or two after shut-down. My John Deere lawn tractor has the same sort of valve, but working the other way round.

Your mentioning the choke seeming to be stuck on reminded me of when I was asked to look at a generator which had been loaned to the local scouts (a more undisciplined bunch of louts could never be found) and had been returned not working properly. It would start but ran slowly and wouldn't regulate. After a lot of fiddling around, I realised that one of the louts had managed to push the throttle control so far around to the "fast" setting that the control arm had become stuck behind a limiting arm and the throttle was so far on, that it was actually almost "off" again. After a lot of trouble, I finally managed to free the control arm and get it onto the correct side of the limiting arm, which solved the problem and got the generator working correctly again. (This was a pretty large generator, of around 12k watts or more at our country's standard 240V)

There's allot of people that don't want to mess with machinery, no matter how easy it is and then there's the not mechanically inclined, they just prefer to go buy a new one, great video and find.

Choke can´t be turned off... "could be as simple as that..." Me, looks at the lenght of the video: nope...

I'd love to work on and sell some old power equipment, more for something to do, and not necessarily as income. I saw you spent $70 for that generator and I've never seen anything priced like that locally. I went onto my local craigslist and chuckled when I found that most sellers were asking full new retail for their used generators. Even generators that had fuel leaks and carb problems were listed at what I could order them for from home depot or amazon brand new. I guess I'll have to stick with side-of-the-road discards for the time being. Great video though, thanks for the content!

Very educational videos. My generators are sometimes hard to start but it’s usually a fuel issue. New fuel and a little squirt of fuel into the cylinder is all I need to do. If you could dig up a Honda EM with auto throttle and explain how they work (or fail) I’d love to see that... mine is screwy...

I bought a Titan 9000ES brand new about ten years ago during a bad ice storm. Anything you can tell me about the quality of the machine and type of motor. It has given me good service the few times I have needed it. Last time was three days last week. Thanks for the very informative video.

You should probably check the valves as well, it was blowing back through the carb when you were running it

After watching about 8 of your videos I had the confidence and ambition to tackle our broken generator. When I opened it up I was surprised to find it was brushless, got the multimeter out done some tests, I think the capacitors are dead, if I’m right it’s a £6 fix! Excited for the delivery. You could have just saved me a couple hundred quid, so thank you in advance 🙌

It is crazy what they make with a single cylinder engine. Noisy while running at ~3600 RPM. My diesel is 3 cylinder, water cooled, electric start, and is more likely to last under load. Seeing a unit that can be loaded into a pickup, vs a trailer mount unit rated lower, makes me wonder about the full load and surge capacity of both. My diesel is rated to run continuous at 6KW with 8KW surge for 30 minutes. It would be interesting to see them both load tested side by side. Nice video showing the troubleshooting.

I see these selling brand new for $3800. Pull start, no bells and whistles. I'm stumped as to why anyone would buy a generator like this for much more than $800 new. I picked up two with electric start and remote control (one missing carb) for $250. I had to replace both carb from Amazon and ditch the remote. Both ran perfect after minor surgery.

My old Dayton drops to idle when the load drops off when whatever it's powering shuts off, the throttle opens again when the load hits it.

I have a question for you. My husky generator 5000 watt is running at 60hz and 117 volts under a 3000 watt load. Is that set pretty good? Voltage does drop some under no load and will go up to 121 volts with different loads. I didn't realize that it would actually increase voltage under load. Is this normal?

You've forgotten the GASKET between carb and throttle plate while reassembling.

I was in Lowes yesterday (10/25/21) and they had over 50 used generators stacked in the garden section (Craftsman, Generac and Firman) All looked new, some still in boxes that were opened and they all had the gas cap off and you could smell gas. Many of them didn't have the wheels installed. Some had tags on them that said WOULD NOT RUN. Was wondering if they were sent out to help with Hurricane Ida help by Lowes and then just brought back.

This generator is rated at a maximum run load of 7200 Watts.

Is that motor a Honda GX 390 clone and if so will the Honda GX 390 internal parts fit?

I have a 5250/5500 one that shuts down after warming up and running about 10 mins. also it shuts down if running more than 1000W of load. I have the correct amount of oil in there. governor acts fine with the "idle control" on and off, or when I start a circ saw or angle grinder. sth pulls on the throttle arm assembly to shut down the engine.

18:20......needs flashing lights and stop arm extends while running. 💁‍♂️😄😆😅

What do you use in your ultrasonic? I have had amazing results with pine sol soaks especially for removing rust off steel and iron parts

1:05 ive gotten a honda clone carb and that hole was never drilled. its one less step for them to make it like its supposed to be. I guess they assume nobody uses it so why bother. You can just remove the whole screw like you did if need be. 10:40 that's because its a clone carb just like what i got.

James I have a Titan 8500 electric start and manual pull start. What happen with mine I had it in the store house and I guess the needle and seat stayed open and it leaked out in the store house. should I replace that or is it ok. it don"t have a fuel shut off and I think that's what happen. It ran good and powered up fine. I wish your were here I would let you look at it. I live in Wichita Falls Tx. Ps the new ones I saw had a fuel shut off on them

Hi James, I have a small Champion model 42432. 1800/1400 watts. I am getting fuel blowing bout if the carb. I took the valve cover off and adjusted the valves gap. Still blowing fuel. Any advice on where to go next?😮Thanks, Greg Smith

Great Videos James. Very Informative. I have a generator that was putting out at best 118 volts. I found a new Generator. But the former Gen Head adapter does not fit it. The four securing screw holes are off position. Do you sell parts? Would you happen to have a Gen Head Adapter off of bad Generator? Appreciate any response you can give me. Thanks, Doug.,

10:15 FALSE!!!! If the generator has an idle down it will use the idle stop as it uses that for idle down... without it it cannot run right and will stall.

yeah, I'd like to hear your comments on the quality of those red fuel filters. Others are claiming they are absolute junk compared to a paper gravity filter in regards to filtering quality! Overall, a great buy for a 8K generator!

Also I find 3/8 fuel line works well as a breather hose. More durable and seals better, much less cost.

Standard automotive 1/4" fuel line that you buy at an auto parts store or hardware has a slightly larger OD than what is typically used on small engines. This makes it difficult to fee through tight passages (like some Tecumseh engines).

I had no idea it was that easy to take out the main jet. I've always stopped at spraying carb cleaner up that tube, now I've learned more about digging deeper!

That's a pretty unusual looking carb/choke setup. I know when the "Shanghai Special" motors started appearing, parts were a tough find... hopefully that situation has improved. Many of those motors run OK.

ive got the same generator as you, mine will run up just fine but it wil not output any power, the on/off switch on the side flickers, dont know if that means anything

Original comment from the other person said... would only run on starter fluid...... so... something was blocking fuel. If it ran on starter fluid... than spark plug wire was fine.

Just worked on one of these, one of these. The green ground wire terminal popped off the switch inside the panel.

Add a petcock drain on the carb and lose the emission kit on the carb. That junk will make it hard starting.

I've just got my Titan 8500 generator working today. I have never seen a spark plug that was completely open. I took out my plug and tried it with the plug wire on it. Nothing was going through it. But when I held the wire close to ground it would jump fire to the block.

"Generators don't idle. . . ." actually some do, inverter generators in particular. Most non-inverter generators don't though. Yea, I had to nitpick. Anyways great video.

I ran across this older video because I just bought one of these for $50. It doesn't look aa good as this one but just needed new gas and the tank cleaned. I was hoping to see how clean the power was

This is funny, it's a 7400 watt continuous generator, but it seems like the circuit breakers aren't enough to let you access 61 amps.

I’m not sure why. But I believe they hire Neil Armstrong to torque the main jets on all small gas engine carburetors.

OK..having a hard time finding where the battery is on our Titan 8000 Generator, can you help?

Similar to the Generac 5500W gen I found on Craig's List some years ago. Seller was asking something over $100 but when he tried to start it, it wouldn't stay running. I offered $80 and he took the cash. Problem was a slightly bent linkage - just enough to make it bind. Still have that as my gen to run power tools when needed - it can start and run the 10" table saw. We've learned to manage most power outages on much less power. Less than 12 hours will be on the solar-charged backup system I built - nice to have silent backup ;-) More than 12 hours, we'd be on the 1600 watt inverter gen for not-silent backup but long backup per gallon.
