This machine (an obvious German copy of the American Grover & Baker #9) came from a Michigan antique store and was originally thought to be a German Wertheim model from around 1870. While cleaning, the name "TITTEL" was found cast in the underside of the bed. Wilhelm Tittel started his company in 1863 in Germany and became Tittel & Nies in 1884 after a partnership formed. Also while cleaning, the number "21396" was found stamped in the area that is covered by the front slide plate, presumably the serial number. Most of the machined parts on this sewing machine were found to be stamped with the number "396" which in the early days of manufacturing (and before the concept of interchangeable parts) was very common for a hand-built machine's parts to be identified so as not to be mixed up with others in the assembly process. If you have any information on this machine, please feel free to share it!
