Welcome to the fourth installment of my layout videos. This time we concentrate on my vintage Lionel operating accessories. Most of these were produced in the mid-fifties, making them over fifty years old! They load and unload lumber, culverts, ice, coal, milk cans, cattle and oil drums.
The last scenes feature two projects that I built from scratch. The school playground is powered from below by three small gear motors. Note that the two swings run independent of each other.
The lift bridge is constructed using Erector girders, pulleys and motors. The moveable span is an Atlas single track Pratt Truss bridge. Two Erector motors connected together on top of each tower drive a shaft that rotates six pulleys. Cables that run over the pulleys are connected to the bridge span on one end and a counterweight on the other. Power for the track on the bridge and LED lighting is supplied by two twisted pair wires that raise and lower with the bridge. The weighted wires descend into the the bridge abutment. Each pair of motors is controlled by a variable power supply to help keep them in synchronization so the bridge is kept level. The bridge spans 40 inches wide and rises to a 74 inch clearance. It connects my main layout with a three track siding that is 18 feet long.
More to come.....

If you had it all now and had it all working now you would still be the king of model railroading. I liked the sound effects too.

This is the way it was when a boy would love trains and dream of having working accessories like this on his layout. Unfortunately today kids prefer video games and x boxes for entertainment. I would say that CREATIVITY AND IMAGINATION on building and running a railroad was and always will be a thrill. Thank you for sharing your video of the great demonstration of Lionel working accessories. Thank you from all the people who enjoy Trains and running them for fun and imagination.

When my father had his humongous Lionel layout in the basement of the house in New York, he bought the Bosco milk car accessory because he knew I loved Bosco for making chocolate milk. I would have something like that on my hi-rail layout for nostalgic sake. If I remember right the milk cans were chocolate brown. The accessories nowadays the old ones if they work command sky-high collector prices and the chinese-made reissues even if they work quieter and better than the originals are still ridiculously expensive. Too much for my blood.

The accessories added good play value for a child. But as an adult hi railer they are noisy and leave much to be desired for scenery purposes. I just like to fire up the train and let them run. Did not do the switching in HO scale sure don't do it in Tri-Rail because switches are expensive just like in the old days. Kids would ask each other how many switches you had. For changing routes Maybe but let's face it we are not going to be setting out cars and picking up cars at Industries. I did not want to emulate the real thing to that extent. Too much like work. I just want to have fun with my trains.
@isellu

Yeah, there are several ways to enjoy the hobby but I like to run them as well instead of realistic operation. Thanks for watching!

@@isellu what's with the BMW emblem? I myself have a small collection of BMW Airhead motorcycles from the 1970s. Great bikes. I have 500,000 miles on my 1977 100/ 7 I told lady pulled out in front of me and my bike went through her passenger door. I hated losing one of my classic motorcycles and almost getting killed due to someone stupidity. So are you at the BMW Motorcycles or are you into cars?
@isellu
@isellu Год назад
@@frankmarkovcijr5459 It sounds like you have a great collection and I'm glad you're still alive to enjoy it. BMW makes great bikes and cars and has a very loyal following. We are currently without any BMWs but we have had several AWD 3 series, X3s and X5s over the years from 1994 until 2013. The twin turbo 3 series was a little rocket.

I wish they still made accessories like this, for Lionel and American Flyer made great ones. Lionel occasionally puts out a revamped version of their classic operating cars and accessories, but the range is small and pricey, not as good as the old ones were either...
@CanadaSteamBuff
@CanadaSteamBuff 7 лет назад
Shipwright1918 you are better to try to purchase some of the used original accessories (which I have done) rather than the revamped ones which I have heard don't last and break down. They are usually made of plastic rather than metal. You can still pick up many of the old one ps in relatively good condition. Lionel's Vision Line of engines and freight cars look excellent but are extremely expensive.

@lizrdlovrs That is the American Flyer, by Lionel, #4-2321 Sawmill from the '80s. The sister accessory is the #4-2300 Oil Drum loader that sits next to it. Even though they are technically S scale, they work well with O scale trains. There have been several versions of that accessory and it shouldn't be too hard to find one. Good luck!
