He borrowed against his 50% ownership of the publishing catalog, and he was having problems paying back those loans plus the interest, so he was about to lose NeverLand and his ownership of the Sony/ATV company. The only thing that would get him out of quick debt was guaranteed upfront money from touring. But again he was not ready for it, and eventually, he lost his life in preparation for that tour. I believe if Michael Jackson was not in so much debt, he would be alive today.
