I must admit I have been getting very frustrated when using the TK8 lately, that was until I found your channel, you explain everything so clearly and in a way that even new users will understand, many thanks and keep up the excellent work.
AWESOME tutorial. I have been getting better with masks & this tutorial demonstrated some many techniques I can use to improve. Happiness is TK Friday. Especially when you show so many helpful tips and trips. You are my “secret weapon” for improving my Photoshop post processing. THANKS!!!
Great tutorial Dave, it really shows the power of the TK panel. Many thanks, now I should practice a little on my own pictures. Cheers from Ushuaia, End of the World.
Absolutely a game changer, being able to watch your tutorials on the TK8 has made it so much easier to use with a certain amount of confidence. Thank you so much!
Awesome video!! Can't wait to try this out. I have learned so much following your channel. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Always looking forward to TK Friday
Another great video. I appreciate the fact that you don't edit out mistakes (not that you make many). We all make mistakes and it helps to see how you deal with them.
Hi Dave, an excellent video on TK8. I've watched it 3 times and I think I've got the gist of it now. Seems great when I watch you work, then off I go to my images and get confused, but it is getting much clearer. Thanks. ATB
Honestly Dave, I AM HEAD OVER HEELS IN LOVE WITH your TK Fridays !!! ;-). This one especially contains so much handy information... You explain everything so well !! Thank you so much to you and Tony, in this case
Hi Dave, I found your RU-vid channel yesterday and subscribed. Best thing I've done yet! Thank You. I bought TK8 on Thursday along with the training videos from Sean Bagshaw. I have to tell you, I'm learning more here than I did from Sean (sorry Sean!). This video has just taught me what I was trying, without success, to achieve earlier today on some images I shot this week. Now I can go back and start again with a much better understanding. I'm going to be spending a lot of time on your channel. Love it! Thank you. Keep up the great work. (Nigel in the UK)
Excellent tutorial Dave.like others, I think this is the best one yet in your TK Friday series. Perfect stock image to use as a learning one. The way you took us through the edits and how to use the TK8 masking to best effect was superbly done.👍👍
You’ve done an excellent job explaining how the TK8 masking system works - GREATLY appreciated! I’m in the process of changing from Photoshop Elements to Photoshop and Lightroom. I was considering learning Lightroom primarily to use the new masking capabilities. Now, I may just get TK8 and only use Photoshop in my workflow. So much to think about.
I have tried the new masking tools in Lightroom and they work very well for basic editing . The new LR Update really takes a big leap forward. However, if you really want to get into precision masking then Photoshop along with the TK8 Multi-Mask Panel is the way to go.
Great stuff, Dave! Excellent demo of the advanced precision of Photoshop using TK8. You guys make it look easy! Appreciate your steps using the mask calculator. I'm ready to try it now.
OMGosh FAAAANNNTAAASSSTIC ... I will disect this tutorial and make copious notes and I will incorporate them into my workflow where necessary and I will finish my photos with Sean Bagshaws vignetting technique which too is FAAAANNNTAAASSSTIC ... Again, Thanks Dave for another stellar tutorial and thanks too to Tony Kuyper.
Hi, Mr. Kelly. Today I was watching this video again and I'd like to ask you on how to readjust a Color Grading. I'm a little confused on how to accomplish that. Thanks for your time. I gotta say that I learned much more on your TK Fridays videos than on a whole series of videos accompanying the TK Plugin. Thanks for that. Best regards from Rio de Janeir/Brazil.
Paulo what you need to do is go to the layer you want to readjust color grading on (Click on it to make it active). 1. Left Click on the Icon at the Top Right of the Color Grading Tool (it shows a black, gray and white block in the icon, not the 3 separate icons). When you do this it clears out the settings that may have been left over from a previous layer that the Color Grading Tool was used on. 2. Left Click that same Icon again (you will now see the settings for the layer you are now on). 3. Now you can click on any of the Block Icons (Black, Gray or White) and you can readjust the Luminance Values of each of the blocks and the color grading for each of the blocks if needed. I hope this makes sense. I think I will have to bring that up in a new TK Friday video so it makes it clear for everyone...
@@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly thank you so much for your prompt reply. You're such a great guy, sharing all this knowledge with us. I'm so glad I've found your RU-vid's channel. And, yes, I do believe it would be of a huge help you showing this in a video. Thank you, again, for your kindness. Best regards from Rio de Janeiro/Brazil.
Hi Dave: Another great video. When you were dealing with the foreground, you painted out the 'road' and then proceeded to 'subtract' out the Sky & Fence Channels to refine the mask. Could you not have also 'subtracted' the 'Road' channel vs. painting it out? I am really learning a great deal from your TK Friday series. Cheers, Keith
I could have. I believe I originally tried it that way but as I recall I did it the way I did in the video because the road selection was not as accurate and the edges would not have blended as well.
Excellent. I learned so much on masking with TK8. Will need to rewatch to lock into memory. Can it get any better? Wait to next Friday for TKF. Thank you Dave.
No cóż jako Polak oglądam Ciebie i słucham od około tygodnia. Fajne i proste wytłumaczenia. Coś fantastycznego. Pozdrawaiam i dziękuję za takie proste wytłumaczenie. Pozdrawiam z Polski z Podkarpacie z Twierdzy Przemyśl.
This is amazing,I have been using tk panel for a while now, and learnt something new today, thank you so much Dave, keep waiting for the Friday tutorial now 😊
You really knocked it out of the park today Dave. (Can you do a bat flip with a Wacom pen?) Really exciting concepts that will change my workflow forever. Thanks again for all your super tutorials.
Great video, good explanation! Is it possible to do precision masking on a building with many surfaces without using a pen tool to create the channel mask? And then use masks to represent an abstract atmosphere? See for example the work of Joel Tjintjelaar and Julia Anna Gospodarou. Would like to learn that without the hard work of creating the hard masks using the pen tool.
Hi Dave, First Happy New Year. I am looking forward to all the new videos and learning. Sessions on RU-vid. I came back to visit your training. Video on "Setting Yourself Up for MASKING Success." Great video. Can you upgrade this with your .pdf notes?
I am still not sure about this intercecting thing so I output the road without intercepting it with midtone luminosity mask directly to color grading, select midtones and decreased the luminance and I don't spot any difference with the result of intercepting. I hope in one of Yr future videos apply both ways just for the sake of argument. As I said before I am a great fun of Yr tutorials but on this point I still have my doubts. Thanks for the great work you are doing,!
Hi Dave….your videos are great and very instructive….question…regarding the road mask you made and added to your channels after softening the edges….if you had forgotten to soften them and saved it, can you go back and re-edit it or would you have to start over?
Hello Dave. This was fantastic! I can really see the power of this calculation tool. I was a bit confused when I used it, but after seeing your demonstration, I think I'm going to practice with it a bit more. Just to clarify, I have a question. When you made the mid-tone selection of the road and added it with the calculation tool, you went with the mid-tone to capture the nuances of the small rocks and shadows of the road instead of making a binary hard selection just with white?
Thats correct Jose. Sometimes all you need is the Mid Tones adjustment with the Color Grading Tool. It is a more broad adjustment but when you combine the Color Grade Tool Midtones Slider with a Mid Tones intersected Mask you get a more accurate refinement.
Another very useful video Dave. Why did you brush out the road rather than "calculate out" the road as you did with the fence when you wanted to adjust the grass?
Good question Keith. I didn't want to use the Road Channel I saved with the Blurred Edges. The Green Color Mask was the Mask I was using for the edge of the grass meeting the road. I decided it was very easy to just paint off the road with a Black Brush.
@@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly Thanks Dave. Do you know if there is a difference between using Intersect and Minus? Intersect seems to minus an area out of a selection, e.g. in your photo when you intersected the road with the pebbles the result minuses out the pebbles. Your videos are really helpful.
Cool! I'm embarrassed I knew nothing about Photoshop's Object Selection Tool. You hit it out of the park again with TK8 training. You selected a mid-tones mask before adjusting with color grading using the mid-tone (again) adjustment button. It appears to be redundant. Do you first make a pixel mid-tone selection because it's somehow better than just selecting the mid-tone button in color grading alone? I hope you can follow my kluge question. I just love Fridays thanks to your videos.
It is more controlled than just the mid tones on the curve. It’s taking it one step further in terms of the adjustment. Basically you are getting a mid tones mask and combining it with the mid tones curve. However, sometimes the mid tones curve is all you need. But when you really want precision, this is the way to go. You can also use the Color Grading Tool with any of the masking options available in the TK8 Multi-Mask Panel.
Bonjour Dave. I am a new " customer" to your tutoriels and am just impressed and happy to learn trips and improve TK and...my English ! "Little question" How do I download the image ...where can I found that link ? Merci

Bonjour Dave. is there a way to download images from previous tutorials ? I would like to have the one: Setting yourself for making a success. And for next Friday, where can I cet the link ?. Tks
amazing tutorial! i have an issue. after selecting a saved layer, i click on the color grading tool icon, when selecting midtones i get a popup saying the active layer is not an appropriate color grading curves adjustment layer. you know what the problem might be? and any fix for this? thanks.
Yes. You need the TK8 Multi-Mask Beta update. Photoshop changed something a few updates back and Tony had to update the Color Grading Tool to work with the new versions. You can contact him and he can help you to get the updated Multi-Mask Beta. The other thing you can do is purchase the new TK9 Plugin For Photoshop which has the updated Color Grading Tool. Here is Tony Kuyper's Contact Link: goodlight.us/contact.html
Harold if you are comfortable with only using Lightroom and are happy with your results, there is no need to use Photoshop. For me, Photoshop and the TK8 Plugin for Photoshop and all of the great Selection Tools are a better choice. In Lightroom I get Select Sky and Select Subject but none of the other Selection Tools (Object Selection Tool, Quick Selection) and I also get the excellent Refinement tools. As a side note, I find the TK8 Plugin for Photoshop to be much easier to use than the Lightroom Local Adjustment Tools. But like anything, using the Lightroom Tools or the Photoshop Tools along with the TK8 Plugin for Photoshop there’s always a learning curve and that is what TK Friday is all about…
Following the instructions, repeating and following again and again until I feel comfortable. Somewhere I managed to turn off the highlighting capability of the selection tool when I hover over the fence. How do I get it back?
I believe you are looking for the Object Finder found in the Top Menu Bar for the Object Selection Tool. It needs to be checked on if you want to see the objects the Ai finds in your image.
I want to thank each and everyone for viewing and subscribing to my RU-vid channel. Thanks also for Liking, Subscribing and Sharing. I also want to thank all of you for your comments and for all of your words of encouragement. I can’t thank you enough…
