Actually I think that was only something developed in S5 (post-safehouse as even in S5 safehouse Jon was unsure he could sleep at all) as it's the first time Martin brings it up and vocalises how it freaked him out which also took Jon by suprise too "in terms of,, Jon finding out he slept with his eyes open I mean!" And considering Martin frequently visited Jon in the coma I believe it's safe to say Martin wouldn't have been as freaked out otherwise and it would go so far as for Jon to discuss what it's like when he's drifting off to sleep in S5 because of this and when we are told what Jon looks like physically while he's in his coma it doesn't bring up his eyes being open at all, in fact in terms of whether his eyes are open or closed the only thing that's really brought up is his eyes being closed!! ^^ so it seems pretty on point actually that his eyes would be closed in the art :0!! “The Archivist does not know where he is, and in many ways that is correct, for to say that he was anywhere would be an error.
