Unbelievable! I was diagnosed with TMJ years ago but thankfully my discomfort is not severe so I ignored the doctor's recommendations and didn't go back to him. I hope there are real solutions someday soon.

Had TMJ for decades. The only thing that helped was night guards on both the top and bottom of my mouth. I found a wonderful chiropractor who aligned my back, shoulders, and neck. It took 2 years and the pain slowly started going away. What those poor women went through is disgusting and shameful. I pray they are able to find a way to be pain free.

Botox has really helped my TMJ, but insurance won't cover it. It's definitely pricey, but going without it is not an option. The pain is HORRIBLE without it. I budget it in, but it would be very nice if insurance companies actually recognized it as a health treatment and not just for cosmetic purposes.

I was diagnosed with this 20 years ago, after absolutely debilitating pain. I was put on muscle relaxers at night for six months or so (which was terrible) and a night-guard mouthpiece, which I wore for years. It worked - and today I’m mostly pain free and except for times of high stress, when it flares back up. (I think I clench my jaw subconsciously during deep sleep)

My TMJ pain wasn’t nearly this horrific, but physical therapy taught me that I first needed to fix my neck. Later an online comment recommended sleeping with a My Pillow pillow. Switching to the more supportive My Pillow pillow healed about 80% of my pain by giving my neck the all night support it needed.

Good lord - I had no idea. I had TMJ as a young woman, and my treatment was corrective surgery (3 plates and 10 screws) and braces. I'm so grateful that the only problem I have now is that I can't chew gum anymore. These poor women have been dismissed out of hand or given unproven treatments by heathcare professionals that didn't deserve their trust. That makes me so angry.

I have this as well, and it's a complex issue. I have put off treatment but was told I need reconstructive jaw surgery. I went through multiple nightguards that I cracked, but still ended up losing many teeth - they are all cracked from the related bruxism (grinding the teeth due to the TMJ). I also have unbearable tinnitus, sinus issues, headaches, etc. Why do I believe it impacts women more than men? ANGER. Men are allowed to express anger in public, in daily life, through the outlet of sports, etc. It is socially acceptable. Most women INTERNALIZE that anger, and it results in depression, myriad physical ailments, and ultimately storing that anger + stress in the body for it to find its own pathways of expression. (Stress? Sure, but both men and women experience stress.) I have had chiropractic care that helped in the past for this but cannot presently afford it, and I'm sure insurance doesn't cover it for this condition. Also, we have an extreme lack of adequate dental care in this country, and we know that dental care is crucial to overall health care and outcomes. We need to do better.

I remember reading somewhere that the intense pain from tmj and another condition that causes facial and jaw pain (I think it’s called trigeminal nerve something) can make sufferers suicidal. The treatments they showed in this segment look absolutely barbaric, medieval, brutal.

Thank you for this story. In the 1980’s this was called “cheerleader syndrome” because teen girls reported symptoms that no one knew how to address. You should do a follow up story on the cost and lack of insurance coverage. Most dental and health plans have fine print that specifically exclude all TMJ related treatments. The jaw joint is very similar to the knee yet there has been so little study!

Wow! unbelievable these women went through this. I have had TMJ since I was 13 and I’m now 55 I’ve tried splints and other things over the years to help it but nothing has really worked. I now have suffer from migraines. I have trouble talking because it causes me pain. I can’t eat solid foods very much. I don’t want to talk to anybody list goes on. This can be a very debilitating to many people especially women myself including. Not enough research and funding has been done to help combat this 1 millions of people. They are not enough doctors or specialist that know how to treat this or are not experienced enough, and the result is what you see above in this video with these poor women went through, I will never get surgery after hearing their stories, but stories from other people that went through surgery. So I continue to suffer and isolate myself because of my severe TMJ. I also suffer from fibromyalgia which until just recently was another condition that was scrutinized for many years and not believable.

I had TMJ pain since I was a teenager. It caused horrific headaches and nothing helped. Finally I went to Airrosti and the doctor spent multiple sessions doing trigger point release of the hundreds of knots in my masseter and temporal muscles. It was very painful but it worked. I haven’t had TMJ pain for years. It won’t work for everyone but it was a miracle for me.

This story is lacking information on simple jaw exercises for TMJD. There is a special PT certification for this. I had pain going to my ear and was diagnosed with TMJD by an ENT. I was given jaw exercises and a referral to a PT specializing in this disorder. It’s unfortunate this is a shock value news story with incomplete information.

TMD is a complex problem, it's true, both the diagnosis and the treatment are complex and involve topics such as headaches, sleep, changes in all cardiac, hormonal, intestinal systems, etc. But we already have great advances in diagnosis using several evaluation protocols, including MRI and CBCT, for both the joints and the skull, as the changes can affect the spine or intracranial structures and not only the TMJ. We have great professionals both in the USA and in Europe (Portugal, Spain) and even is Brazil. Now a days most professional base they activity in science based evidence but still , like the interview says, there are professionals that do not want to see or learn but it is all very well published that this radial interventions should not be done unless in very particular cases. In Portugal we are using growth factors ( I-PRF , PRP and Hyaluronic acid to rehabilitate even severe conditions) with very good results and they are published. For tmd treatment it is needed a real big team from dentists, physiotherapists, ENT, speech therapist, pneumology and neurology and psychiatry. Be aware that tmd is a big umbrella for several conditions that may or not involve pain , but surely must be treated because it can cause several health problems and even same times they are the signs of a bigger problem. Now it is very clear that there are NO relation with teeth and TMD ( one doesn´t cause the other and no one should move or touch teeth implying that it will cure anything ( same times using braces makes tmd to stop hurting but that is because the dental ligaments are moving and the brain ( that is the place were pain exists) is adapting to the new information that is receiving but depending of the cause of the disfuncion the pain and/or disfuncion returns ( same people say i had pain and then after braces it stopped and that is true if the pain had a muscular component but it can not be said that it wasn't because the person adopted new habits or changed things that troubled him/her or even it got worse in the inside bone but it just doesn't hurt ( that person doesn't know what is happening inside unless the doctor does an mri or cbct) I see on the posts that @tishw4576 is using two night guards!! definitely NO! and @rosescott9299 says is clenching the teeth during the night ( that alerts that there is a sleep movement disorder to be addressed). Another point is the importance of the diagnose .... saying it hurts on the ears can have a very diferente origin depending of the patient . Well, all this to say that there are big advances on diagnose and treatment and that it is important that people can search professional that are specialized and trained on the hospitals and faculties and are up to date on the articles published.

I promise y’all that I got TMJ from having braces. Prior to braces, my jaw never locked, clicked, or was in pain. I told my dentist but she denies it was the braces. She ordered me a night guard and said that was going to help my jaw or surgery was my other option.

I've had TMJ since I was a teenager. I'm now middle-aged. Luckily mine is mild and I don't need treatment. I think mine was caused by either orthodontic treatment or getting my wisdom teeth out. Women tend to have smaller, weaker jaws than men. this means they can get messed up more easily than men's jaws.

Chiropractic treatment of TMJ doesn't have a lot of evidence to back it up either. The last time I went to a chiropractor for my TMJ, they pointed a laser at my cheek for 20 seconds, and then hit the top of my head with a hammer thing and said, "Well sometimes this works." Needless to say, I haven't been back. There isn't a set standard for Chiropractic practices. Each one is different. They follow their own rules and create their own procedures. I am terrified of going to someone who "thinks" they know best but actually make things WAY worse. Massage therapy has sort of helped. I have gotten facial massages, and the days after are horrible, but I think I feel a little better in the long term. Unfortunately, there just isn't really a good solution.

Then insurance under dental covered very little! Medical kicked in! 3 yrs of that the medical wanted me to pay back…I fought it and won! Took 8 years of moving my teeth with retainers and special mouth guards! Pain free to this day!😅
