I'm not a shawl knitter, and I'm not a shawl wearer. I am apparently a big fan of watching you talking about your shawls. What a fun surprise! Thank you for this perfect episode.
If you don't walk away from this video wanting to immediately cast on a shawl, something is not wired right in your brain XD All jokes aside, this was a lovely video Amy! I am always so inspired by your wide range of color palettes and skill sets.
Hands down, my favourite episode ever! I’m a shawl knitter and it was wonderful to see your shawls in so much detail. I agree with you, I’ve always been put off knitting Stephen West shawls as they always look so vibrant and “out there”. Over the past year though I’ve knitted two, and I always get compliments when wearing them, much more than any other shawl I wear. His patterns are so well written and ingenious, I’m a convert! (and I was furiously making notes on yours for my next one!). Thanks for taking so much time showing and telling. Kathryn x
lovely Amy, you are such a talented knitter and your color choices are always amazing and very inspiring. I love the stories you have with your shawls and what they make you think of, it feels like a true connection to the items you have created. It is wonderful that you are now able to display your art and enjoy them everyday. Knitted items aren't meant to be tucked away and never worn because they are too precious (I am one of those people) but displayed and worn, pleasing both the wearer and the onlooker. They are true pieces of ART. Looking forward to part 2. Thank you for sharing
Yes, I believe that too - these are pieces that deserve to live their life in the light! And, I do believe that I am wearing a greater variety of them now that they're not all packed away.
Suriously holey was my first paid pattern. 😂 I haven’t learned brioche yet and it’s been 5+ years, I think? It’s still on my list, hopefully this year. Your grandma’s shawl is absolutely lovely and I bet it feels like a hug when you wear it. ❤
Amy, I am enjoying this episode SO much. I especially love the stories about when you bought the yarn or when you wore the shawl, and why it’s special. I’m so glad you have the black lace from your grandma. She sounds like a wonderful lady. ❤️
Thanks for your podcast. Some lovely shawls there. I put all of my woolly knits away after wearing. Have found that no matter where I have lived in the UK - woolly bears (moths) have always had a good chew of anything wool that has been left out. And they particularly like mohair. Red is their favourite colour. And before people add the stuff about cedar balls and lavender bags and lavender air misters, etc - have tried them all over the last 40 or 50 years without success. 😊
What a great idea that shawl wall !!! They are so gorgeous ! This is so inspiring, I am now dreamming of knitting many Stephen West' shawls, it helps a lot to see them on you. THANKS !
This was a delicious and beautiful presentation of yarns and colours. It inspires me to continue playing with my own shawl projects. I have mine folded onto an open bookshelf with a few more hung over hangers in my entry closet. However I always seem to need another shawl to match something else. It never ends.
Thank you Amy for this absolutely gorgeous podcast. I knew your shawls, but seeing them all together and how you wear them hugely inspired me! After watching, I ran to my drawer and pulled out every shawl I have to look at them and think about what colors I miss. Second, my queue grew a lot! Now over to my stash to match colors with my wardrobe…🙋🏼♀️😂
Thank you for a lovely look into your shawl library. They are beautiful and your color choices are stunning. I have made one Stephen West shawl, Sea Swell. While I love the outcome, it is a big shawl with lots and lots of knitting. At one point, my husband declared that I was grudge knitting -I just wanted to finish it! I look forward to your podcasts; they are so calming and reassuring! Cheers, Dee
Your shawl collection show!!!! I loved this. Good tips on tassels for the Hipster shawl. I haven’t blocked mine to finish yet. I also adore Steven West shawls and have learned so much from doing his patterns. His directions and videos are easy to follow.
I love your Shawl Wall -- both as a way to display your shawls and as a way to hear the stories behind your shawls! I am already looking forward to Part Two!! Thank you for sharing different ways to wear them as well. I didn't know about using a cuff to help keep a shawl in place, and I'm excited to try it.
You can also try a bangle and thread the ends of your shawl through. I have a couple of plain wooden ones that I picked up at a charity shop that work really well.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I will not feel guilty about making more shawls anymore. Your shawls are absolutely beautiful and what a wonderful way to paint with yarn. ♥
What a great idea! This is better than keeping them in a clear plastic storage bag (which I do now) or a basket which is what I was considering. I'm a fanatic shawl knitter and set a personal record during the pandemic. I have even gifted a number of them. Like you I wear shawls everyday.
I have only watched a little because I needed some of your knitting happiness before bed, and this was just perfect! By the way, I LOVE your squeaky floors :)
So with you on the bind off of Striped Esjan!!! I just bound mine off yesterday. Definitely the longest bind off ever....I did not dare to count the number of stitches! Loving your shawl wall and wanting to reknit some after seeing your delightful colorways. thank you xxx
Being a shawl knitter almost exclusively, you can imagine I was blown away with the beauty of your shawls. I, too, am a Stephen West fan, after my first class with him in 2014 during his Stephen & Steven Tour. His approach to shawl design is breathtaking and I enjoy knitting his patterns. Thank you so much for sharing a part of your enjoyment in shawl knitting.
Thank you Amy for an informative and inspirational episode of endless shawls . So much fun to see and hear about different patterns and colors and yarns
Thanks for showing some of your shawls! You gave me a lot of ideas-too many! I think the most interesting and stunning was The Starting Point and over dying the colors. They look perfect. What a grand idea!
Try telling a non-knitter how much fun this was! Thank you for taking the time, Amy, I enjoyed every minute of this episode. What a glorious thing your wall of shawls is. Love it!
oh my Amy! what a glorious wall to have in your bedroom! Such a statement of joy to wake up to each day. Would you show us 'how' you hang them in the second shawl episode please (wink wink)? I always find your podcasts inspirational, but this one was especially so - and you have me wishing I lived in a cold climate. I have knitted a few Steven West shawls (I think my garter goodness was inspired by one of yours a few years ago), but I'm now thinking that I need another glorious one on my needles. I'm currently knitting my oldest son a jumper that has been years promised so not allowing myself anything but dreams until it's done... but a girl can plan, and search her stash, and explore ideas... thank you my friend for sharing your heart and your joy with us.
Loved this episode! Your shawls are exceptionally beautiful. You always make me want to knit shawls upon shawls upon shawls. I've only knit one Stephen West shawl (Sea Swell), it was a wonderful pattern too. I absolutely agree with you that his designs allow for so much room to explore color and shape and to make them your own. Also, thanks for mentioning that brioche isn't actually all that difficult! I taught myself brioche with the Letho pattern by Moonstruck Knits and RU-vid. Once I figured it out, I was amazed at how relatively straightforward it is! Nothing to be afraid of :) Thanks for all your wonderful content! I always love watching your videos.
Gorgeous shawls Amy, thankyou for sharing, I too love a generous shawl, with colour and texture for interest. What a lovely future plan, knitting garments to work with your magnificent "accessories". 😁
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful Shawl wall. I agree they are adult comfort blankets and now I'm going to crack onto casting on more hehe! They were all stunning but my fav was your fading point shawl that you overdyed, the hot pinks, purples with orange is such a glorious spicy colour combination.
First episode watching and enjoyed it so much. You have a talent for color. I’m so glad to have watched and listened to the stories with the project. I’ll be a loyal listener!
Enjoying your showcase of shawls. I'm currently finishing up the Birds of a Feather Shawl, it was hibernating for much too long. The yarn I'm using if Hedgehog Fibers Skinny Singles and Kid Silk Mohair in the color Dijon. I also have a collection of shawls and are tucked away in a closet. Currently working on my craft room and may copy how you displayed your beautiful shawls. I love your grandmothers shawl. What a beautiful story and treasured piece in your collection. Thank you for being such an inspiration.
Thank you for the shawlfest.. awesome work. I have recently done my first Stephen west shawl. His use of colors has been a little outstanding for my tastes so like seeing other uses of colors. The Purl back brioche change you made was quite nice.! Thank you
Wowsers! Love each and everyone of your shawls! I bet Steven West is even impressed! Im inspired to try one of his shawls now...newbie at shawls so looking forward in making one! THANKS for a wonderful episode ❤
Oh my , these are the most beautiful shawls I’ve ever seen. Colours and designs are spectacular. Thank you for sharing! I don’t knit but I love the finished products.💖
Amy, I really enjoyed this episode. I loved how you talked about each one as well as showed how you style them. This has inspired me to hang my shawls as well. I’m guessing by how you pulled them off, they are hung over a dowel. Thank you again and looking forward to the next one.
Lovely to see and hear about your shawl wall. I particularly enjoy hearing your inspirations for choosing the colors you use in your shawls. Thank you for sharing your beautiful creations. ❤
Amy, thank you so much again for all the wonderful inspiration! I just got my first shipment of Holst Supersoft and I am using it to make a year long MKAL Afghan! I love this yarn! Am thinking about now getting cones for the many Shawls you have inspired me to make,
here in New Zealand Holst Supersoft is releatively unknown, but I've found a supplier and will order some to experiment with - when I can decide on the colour!
Loved this episode 😊 So many beautiful shawls and lovely to hear the stories about yarn and the process. I have knitted quite a few of Westknits shawls, he is a true genious. Looking forward to shawl episode 2 😊
Excellent shawl journey. What an amazing knitting experience - through so many different wools. Your opinions are so helpful. It will be one of those podcasts that I'll refer to in the future. A massive thanks to you Amy. Lynn Albany, Western Australia.
Your shawl collection is so inspiring. I love knitting shawls and have quite a few of these on the needles or done already and I think I need to make all the others that I haven't gotten to yet. I just need to get better about wearing my shawls, so thank you for showing us how you wear them. I am also such a big fan of Stephen West. I could make every one of his designs.
Amy, I have also knit a few of the same shawls and found myself shaking my head in agreement with you. I especially enjoyed the story of the one your Gran made. Thank you for the journey through your love of yarn, colors, textures, and knitting.
Thank you so much, Amy, for presenting your shawls. I loved hearing the story of each one. This inspires me to knit some of the shawls you have shown us. I love your sense of colour and design. Have a wonderful week.
This episode (which I’m watching only now) was so inspiring! I decided to cast on a Birds of a Feather shawl (I actually have both the Laine magazine no.2 and some suitable yarn). Perfect match! ❤
Very inspiring. Your obvious love for each shawl really came across and made me want to cast on almost all of them, including some I’ve been familiar with but had never considered before. Thank you for a great episode
I really enjoyed this episode and find your videos so soothing and peaceful. Your shawls are works of art and have me wanting to cast on everything all at once! Thank you for sharing. :)
As a self confessed shawl lover, thanks for this fabulous episode that made my Sunday morning! 😍 … with coffee and of course knitting - have a great Sunday too!
Absolutely wonderful 🥰 a visual delight and so inspirational. Part 2 🙏 I had such a challenging day at work so this was perfect to sit in front of and just knit away. Love the idea of hanging shawls like that too 💕 thank you so very much for sharing this.
