NASA's latest New Frontiers mission, OSIRIS-REx, will venture to a near-Earth asteroid to discover clues about the unique resources asteroids hold, processes that affect asteroids' orbital paths and their potential for impacting Earth, and the origins of life in the solar system. In addition, OSIRIS-REx will collect a sample from the surface of the asteroid and return it to Earth for generations of scientists to study and analyze, making this the first American asteroid sample return mission and the largest sample returned from an extraterrestrial body since Apollo.
OSIRIS-REx's launch window opens September 8, 2016.
This is the journey #ToBennuAndBack.

Not really. Only a handfulbof them have been done
@BensLab

I realise that...but already we're becoming better at it. I find it reassuring. Only a few years ago (seemingly) we hurled something the size of piano at a distant comet-and hit it. Now we plan and execute these missions like they're a trip to the grocery store.

I just read recently on nasa that they actually can see where the Rosetta rover landed on that comet 67P! pretty exciting for our first try! Now humanities 2nd attempt is a return sample, I love it! NASA can do it if anyone can!

First few, this is an asteroid landing- which has been done since the 90s (though that was kind of a pointless one because the probe was an orbiter that could not last for long on its surface... Comets are much harder to get into orbit and land on. Second, this type of sample return has been done by the Japanese, is being done by the Japanese (Haybusa 1, 2, possibly eventually 3), and now USA in this mission. Comparing a comet to an asteroid is apples to oranges,..
@XenaTravelXena
@XenaTravelXena 7 лет назад
Bennu is a carbonaceous asteroid (B-type) compared to Itokawa S-type. The Hayabusa mission failed to collect regolith samples the first time (probably due to its stony surface) and only had dust the second. OSIRIS-REx won't be landing on Bennu but giving what Mission leads call a "High 5" type maneuver with the TAGSAM hopefully collecting more than was brought from Itokawa. :)

One of the things I love about scientific endeavour is the long-term thinking it necessitates. A healthy contrast to the short-termism of the political world. Our future depends on that kind of long view.

Great video thanks, love this technology. Question, what forces will be put on the astroid with the nitrogen blast? enough to change its current trajectory? if not now but perhaps 100, 1000 years from now. For every action there is a reaction.
@NASAGoddard
@NASAGoddard 7 лет назад
For every action there is a reaction, but we also calculate relative forces, and relative to the size of the asteroid, some dusting with nitrogen is insignificant. However we are considering long-range applications of tiny forces, like the spacecraft's mass orbiting parallel to the astroid's orbit for a year or so. That could exert enough pull to be measured, we hope.

Since Bennu is listed as a potential risk for an Earth impact on the "Sentry Risk Table" they could have pushed it into a large Crater on Earth's Moon - at < 500m it would be a bit big for an Ocean landing on Earth and the burn-up with seawater bath would preserve little.
@connorhalleck2895
@connorhalleck2895 7 лет назад
Does the spacecraft get captured by the asteroid's gravity? What is the mass of the asteroid? How does the spacecraft propel itself toward and away from the asteroid? What is the size of the capsule? You guys should make videos that go more into the specific orbital mechanics and rocket engineering of the mission.

@NASAGoddard 7 лет назад
As for your other questions, check out the mission page’s timeline for a brief description of OSIRIS-REx’s arrival at Bennu: www.asteroidmission.org/mission/#arrival What is the mass of the asteroid? - 60-78 billion kilograms, which is the same order of magnitude of the mass of concrete in the Three Gorges Dam. How does the spacecraft propel itself? - hydrazine. You can read all about the propellant system here: dslauretta.com/2014/12/16/integration-of-the-osiris-rex-main-propellant-tank/ What is the size of the capsule? - It’s a couple feet across. I wonder if "landing" on it would be a better use of the rocket costs which will get it there. They have to get a 12 inch diameter spot that is mostly dust or small particulate matter, on a dynamic object (im not sure about benu's angular velocity). If instead they utilized a cone shaped lander such that contacting the asteroid with a small continuous net force in direction towards the asteroid, such that the cone would be in a equilibrium position, depending on the asteroids angular momentum; could possibly have been made possible by a larger ion engine.

Question. What happens if they don't find any regolith? What if its all solid rock? There would be no sample then. And no drill on Osiris-Rex either. The ice-picks on Rosetta's Philae Lander were also useless and in that case it was a disaster!
@NASAGoddard
@NASAGoddard 7 лет назад
Odds are pretty good that a rock of this size has had its share of craters kicking up dust.
@Katrina13J
@Katrina13J 7 лет назад
From the project scientist Jason Dworkin - we can tell from thermal measurements that the surface texture is small-scale, and there are multiple lines of evidence that there's surface regolith. (Someone just asked this question at the live Science Briefing. I didn't quite catch his full answer, but NASA TV will be re-playing it at 3:30 I believe. nasa.gov/nasatv)

Mandy S What I'm finding is "Submitted works of art will be saved on a chip on the spacecraft." They stay on the spacecraft and will enter orbit around the Sun after the spacecraft drops off the sample return capsule. I don't believe the sound will be broadcast, it's just including different forms of art, in digital form, on a tiny chip that the craft will carry.
@mandys1505
@mandys1505 7 лет назад
Oh, really? I did not understand. I was wondering how the broadcast would work, bc of course the sound needing to propagate itself thru some medium.
