This year marks 50 years since Turkey invaded Cyprus. War of any kind is devastating for all involved, and leaves a lasting impact on the families who lived through it. This video is entitled 'To Cyprus, My Homeland' as this is the name of the poem Tia's mom wrote - the one you will hear in the second part of the video.
This was a very special and touching trip as we visited the occupied side of the island with Tia's family. As we drove down familiar roads, Tia's mom recounted some of what she remembers of the day of the invasion, as well as her memories visiting certain areas of the island before the invasion. This is only a short video of what we saw that day. We drove all the way to the tip of the island to visit Apostolos Andreas Monastery and then made our way back down along the coast to stop in the Ghost City. Varosha has been frozen in time as it was closed for many years after the war. It has only become open for people to visit in the past 4 years.
