To Drive, The 2022 MINI Cooper SE is *Almost* Perfect (For Trips Less Than 100 Miles)

Earlier this month, we told you our initial thoughts looking around the MINI Cooper S.E. Resolute Edition, a car that on paper looks like a compliance vehicle, lacks much of the space and features of most modern EVs, and has a pretty large price tag for what it offers.
But once you get behind the wheel, as we quickly discovered, it's a driver's car first and foremost, encouraging you to push it to its limits... Which as it happens, is about 100 miles per charge.
On paper, we shouldn't like this car any more than we did the Mazda MX-30 EV.
In the real world? It's everything we want in a sporty hot hatch (except that range).

I am loving my Mini Cooper SE. My round trip to work in San Diego is ~40 miles. I leave with 100% and end up back at home with ~70%.

I have a Mini SE and autocrossed it this past year. It was an absolute blast to dodge cones with. I wound up winning my class for the year (GS). I plan on autocrossing again next year. I'm in the mountains of North Carolina. I will say that the car was originally intended to be a "second" car but it's really turned into more of a "first" car because it's so fun to drive, with the old ICE-powered SUV held in reserve only for multi-hour road trips.

My Smart EQ Fortwo is the happiest car purchase I have ever made! Doing boring adult tasks is so much easier knowing I am going to get to rip around town at lightning speed and park anywhere! 😅 I live in a very EV friendly place on the coast in Canada, so it's perfect for a year round short range EV. It's still a baby, under 14,000 klm, so I won't be replacing it anytime soon, but I will be looking at a Mini when the time comes!

You nailed the US target market. Definitely looks like a fun 2nd car if you're anywhere that requires a primary car. (Or as we joke in Colorado, it'd be a good "Summer" car to go with a different "Winter" car)
@AnonymousFreakYT

Heck, I drove a BMW i3 (same basic power train) for years, and with proper winter tires (I used Bridgestone Blizzak) it is great on snow/ice. Drove it over mountain passes, to ski resorts, in terrible snow/ice storms regularly. The Mini SE might be slightly less competent due to being FWD instead of RWD, but it should handle winter fine. But again, spot on. Our longest trips in the i3 were in the 200-300 mile (each way) range. It handled those fine. And was a *GREAT* around-town car.

I love my Mini SE. I think the range will work for more than city dwellers. It does make most sense for a 2 car household, but I would say it's a FIRST car, not a second. I live in the suburbs of a large Ohio city, and I have no problem getting anywhere in the greater city area. I'm hoping to learn to autocross it next summer! Thanks for a great calm and informative review!

Agreed. The MINI SE reminds me of our eGolf which has a 200KM range (vs the 183 KM of the MINI), and we can go anywhere and do everything we need to do. As well, the MINI (like our eGolf) looks like a normal car - which is nice when so many new electric cars are going out of their way to be weird and funky.

You got some facts wrong. It’s a 125 mile car. 110 in the winter. In September I drove from Maidstone to Deal via the M2 and back via the M20 on a single charge and had 16% left on the battery. I had it in Green mode, but I didn’t spare the horses. It’s been my daily drive for a year and I get 4.3m/kWh AVERAGE. Despite my lead foot. Which is the second thing you missed ; efficiency. It’s damn efficient. Also, small battery= quick charge. The car takes 15-20 mins to get from 19% back up to 85%. And range is NOT an issue, at least in the UK. The second week I had it, I drove from Kent to Leeds. Two charge stops with 1hr 25 min drive between each. Relaxing. Finally - running cost. I drive the 13 mile round trip to work all week on a single £4 (off peak) overnight charge. My 2016 MINI cooper cost 20x as much in fuel. Since the government subsidies ended, it’s become expensive to buy, also because they dropped the entry (level 1) model. But compared to similar priced vehicles, only the the new MG4 comes even close. 😊

Thanks for the positive review. We still love our 2022 SE after 13k miles. Even without the federal tax credit, it's still the cheapest electric sports car. The range issue reminded me of the suggestion by Click & Clack on the old Car Talk radio show. They recommended always renting a car for long trips to save your daily driver. Perfect advice for the SE if it's your only car.

I hope someone does take up the idea of starting a Mini Cooper electric race series, I would totally watch that. And I hope Mini follows your advice to make a custom-designed version of the car, with the original design goals in mind, and a larger battery! That would be a car people would scrimp and save to buy, and would likely become a collectors item. Tasty 🙂

Many people may balk at the 100-ish miles range but it should be said that, for many people, this is perfectly fine. My current car is my first EV, which I bought used in 2020 (just before the you-know-what hit the fan), is a 2016 Kia Soul EV+. I got it for less than $13,000 with only about 17,000 miles in great condition. Anyway, it has a 93 mile range (about 110 miles if you're not driving on the highway), but for me that is more than enough 95% of the time because I work only about 10 miles from where I live, and on the days I visit my mom in the next town I can still make it all the way there and back on one charge.

Did have a 2 day test drive and loved it. eGolf last time was a sensible choice, this time we went with the heart a bit more. And our small dog fits in boot fine, and 2 kids too. For school runs, town errands, etc, perfect!! And so much fun to drive!! Next Mini…: it will be a Countryman EV and a smaller 3 door built in China & Germany with shared platform with Ora/GWM, bit bigger battery…, and smaller outside but roomier inside as dedicated EV 👍

"A pocket rocket for people who want to live life at 100 miles of fun." BMW should use that quote and pay you. It's spot on. I just ordered one and it will be along 6 months until she's built. Can't wait! I think that post covid with more work from home, people are driving so much less. The car is a blast and I can't wait to zip around town in it. As for the range I simply don't get the argument. It's a city car. Most urban people don't drive a round trip of more than 100 miles a day. I drive max about 10 per day. Yea, it has a specific customer but that's fine. I am so glad that's me! I have a gas Mini Countryman and this is perfect companion.

Just to add, when actually measured by other testers, the acceleration was found to be faster than rated and was limited by grip as much as by power (typically 0-60mph in 6.4 sec.). Also, most owners have found the range rating to be very conservative and more of a minimum.

I want a shopping car. I've never had a car that gets decent 0-60 speed. I want my car to simply get me there with my things cheaply. Along with watching your channels, I'm going to also try to find those RU-vid channels to add to my playlist that specializes in boring cheap practical cars. Probably my future will always be a used small ev for local and a 10 year old diesel for long hauls. Wish both could be electric, but I doubt it will happen for me in my lifetime. (And I will love to be proved wrong!) Keep up the great work.

I had a turbo on a powerstroke go out on me in a different state. When I picked the truck up I drove my mini there and was towing it back and the powerstroke turbo went out again so I pulled the truck over and unhooked the mini . I had to go get a truck and trailer to tow the powerstroke back to the repair shop. I was a state away from home so I wasn’t sure when I’d be back. The powerstroke had a service body so I wanted to get the tools out . I didn’t want them to get stolen and I didn’t know how long the repair would take. The MINI held every tool in that truck and held 100mph (could’ve went faster) the whole way home.

I'm 6'1" and while I do fit in a mini, the last time I sat in one the roof blocked a not insignificant amount of my view from the front. Any angle where I'd be able to safely see a lot of the lights would be quite uncomfortable. So I didn't even consider this Mini (I'd love a mini if I fit in one). Instead I'm going for an i4 M50.

I loved LOVED my 2005 MINI Cooper S. When I first switched to daily driving an EV back in 2013, it was my backup ICE car for years. I used it for auto crossing and some random long trips where there was a lack of charging infrastructure. But as time went on and I was able to travel further in the EV, my MINI started collecting dust. After hardly any use, I sold it last year. I almost considered getting the electric MINI as a replacement but couldn't justify the cost for such a niche part of my life (my Model 3 can handle my "spirted" driving needs anyway). This video makes me miss that car. Good to know I if I had a spare parking spot in the driveway and the cash, I could still get that itch scratched! LOL

I like the quirkiness of the Mini. I’ve driven several ICE versions of these and the forced induction ones were quite fun. (Side note: I used to work for a European car specialist in downtown Seattle. The target buyer you explained for the Mini SE is exactly who buys the ICE Mini. Like…exactly) It has enough range for my commute and it would have been essentially a 2nd vehicle at the time. I considered buying one of these before EV prices went insane, but sadly I don’t fit in it. I have an abnormally long torso for a 6ft tall person (I have a 30” inseam for reference), and my head hits the ceiling even without trying to sit up straight. I also have to look out the very top of the windshield. I wanted it to work for me, but it doesn’t. I also have really strong concerns about long term reliability, since that was decided *not* a strong suit for the i3, which the majority of the drivetrain comes from. This might work fine for autocross, it would not work for a road course. Kyle Conner tried this back when they were doing the One Lap channel and it thermal throttled before one lap was through. The energy capacity is also too low. It might make it through 1 or 2 short heats on a road course, but that would be it, then it would need recharged. That’s not appropriate for a track day.

I have to disagree with your statement that the WLTP test cycle isn't realistic. In my experience it all comes down to your right foot. On a decent day, it isn't that hard to get your car to drive the WLTP distance if you keep your top speed and acceleration under control. My daily driver is a 2019 Hyundai Ioniq with a 28kWh battery. While this vehicle was never officially tested on the WLTP, it was tested on the NEDC which gives an even higher range than the WLTP. And the NEDC testing gives it a range of 280km. If we recalculate the WLTP range of the succesor, the 38kWh variant by dividing the 311km that scored by 38 and multiplying it by 28 you would end up with 229km. In the summers I've had my car, the GOM reads 300km. And from experience, I can assure you that I would be able to achieve that distance. And the 300km is a software limit. I've had multiple other owners confirm that they also cannot get the GOM to display more than 300km even though when you add the GOM and the distance driven together on a good summers day, you end up around 320km. That's driving further with the 28kWh version than the offical WLTP range of the 38kWh version. And with my previous ICE cars, I was also able to achieve the rated fuel consumption. And that is why I state that it really depends on your right foot.

Nice review and it looks like you two had a great time doing it together with some wonderful weather and scenery. Clearly clearly the many and BMW influence produced a fun drivers car. I agree with the points that you made about the possibilities if a new version were built with an EV from the ground up mindset to make the most of the space available. Probably heretical to even think this but imagine a rear wheel drive rear motor mini with a frunk, probably an even tighter turning circle, and better use of the interior space and a still small easy to handle city car with perhaps a little more range and faster charging on par with the Volkswagen ID3. Such things are possible but not sure they are probable given what most of the people seem to want these days. SUVs and CUVs.

It's got plenty for normal uses. Any more and then you're paying a lot more and using your range up faster for just the occasional spurt of power for playing around.

So I’m totally live commenting here. . . Y’all are calling Mini a pseudo premium brand when justifying the price and overlooking that Mazda is clearly in that space too (unless they’ve fallen considerably since the last time I owned and shopped for one in ‘17). They are often dismissed by non-car folks but clearly back in the days when it was 3, 6, CX-5, CX-9 I would have cross shopped any of those except the CX-5 against Cadillac or Audi. Lots of folks I knew back at that time were choosing the Mazda6 over BMW 3. And the 2010 Mazda3 I owned before purchasing an older Chrysler for size and horsepower reasons was every bit the luxury machine as Audi A3 of the same generation. That said, Mazda clearly tried to play the ‘We’re Mazda so it’s going to be weird’ card on their EV, charging the pseudo premium prices they get for the rest of their lineup and absolutely blew it on the execution of the vehicle. Sadly, I think Toyotas stake in the company has had a noticeable negative impact on them, and their laser focus on ICE before bans became reality was clearly a mistake. Yes, they put up a damn good FE fight against hybrids, but EV’s are a whole new level of efficiency.

Firstly, the Mazda drove TERRIBLY. Second, the fit and finish of the MINI is so much better than the Mazda was. - Nikki.

@@transportevolved I didn't mean to sound argumentative, it was just my experience shopping for and owning Mazdas was completely different from what their EV had to offer. It's a real shame. Maybe they've lost their way. At any rate, my fingers are still crossed for the Mini Clubman. . . unless of course I land Aptera first.

It's all good! Healthy discussion (and disagreeing) is part of life! And it's great because we learn what other people think - NIkki ;)

If there were a Clubman EV I’d come running waiving money at them like a mad man. So yeah, bring a 4 door, but make it a proper wagon!

So whilst it might be a nice car I will not be buying it! BMW have taken production of it to China to maximise profits! Developing it in the Mini factory in the UK then stabbing them in the back! I am not against Chinese EVs or China, its just BMWs attitude. I run a a I3REX which is way ahead of the Mini, built as a EV, lightweight construction with no rust issues, better by design

This sounds like a very good effort for 2014

Okay for a second BEV. I'd have to wait to see if the rest of the car has much better reliability than ICE Mini's. Paying BMW maintenance and repair costs always keeps a Mini off my shopping list.

I usually like your reviews, but what exactly was the point of this? A largely glowing review of a pricy car with a ludicrous 100 mile range? Would Kate be able to use this as her only car? I suggest you select a practical minimum range for future reviews, and stick with it.
