I first saw this basket in the fall of 2017. And ever since it has eluded me. WHO used it and HOW? I've asked people time and time again.
At Digitalt museum there's a similar basket called "ullkäring". I don't know if this very basket bore the same name here in Ovansjö (probably not), but I really enjoy the name. If you watch the video you'll get to know what it means.
Here's a link to Digitalt museum and the ullkäring that's a part of Nordiska museets samling:

This is wonderful, thank you! I have wanted to learn basket weaving since I was a teenager and this has pushed me to start. I've already ordered some birch bark basket tapes! Wish me luck!

Wonderful work! We seem to only have very thin bark on the birch trees in England, you are so lucky.

Maybe that's true. It rings a bell somehow. And I'm jealous of the russians and their birch bark! :D

What an excellent video! I like to know how to use different materials to weave but also like collecting the materials myself. We have no birch bark in Texas but we do have willow which won't work exactly the same but I think I'll try. Do you collect all of your materials and if so, when is the best time to collect the bark?

I love all your videos, just discovered them so I am binge watching. Here in Newfoundland we have lots of birch and I process 8 chords of birch every year for firewood and unfortunately destroy some beautiful bark. I would like to know more about processing the birch bark to arrive at a suitable thinness/thickness to work. You touch on it in some videos but is there a way to collect and store birch bark to use later? Keep up the great work.

Thank you for watching! And sorry for my late answer. Preferably you store it dark and not too dry. I dont store my bark very well, because i dont have a place for it. So i have mine in a cold garage. It's easyest to work with when it's newly harvested but you can also use it years later. Use heat to make it more bendy. Try on the material you/ones have and get hands on knowledge. Im sure there are alot of more tricks but i make so much other stuff than birch bark items so i dont go deeeep into the craft. Would like to though. And make i a whole series about the history, the material and the techniques. Watch my other birch bark videos to learn a little more maybe. You should really do some birch bark sloyd. Its truly amazing and such an old craft. :)
