I was recently asked by a fellow turner that had purchased the set of Hampshire sheen intrinsic dyes if he should seal the wood before or after dying the wood, i told him after as the instructions state, he was still curious as to what the results would be since he has seen other turners colour after, maybe acrylic or alcohol based dyes, i dont know,.
so in this video i put it to the test so you can decide.
I have been woodturning since 2013, i love it as a creative outlet and the community or woodturners is great, there is lots of help and support out there available at the touch of a button. don't be intimidated or scared to ask questions no matter how basic, most of all be safe in your workshop, follow all safety rules and guidelines.
use channels such as mine as inspiration and entertainment.
it is recommended to get proper training with power tools to prevent accidents
most of all remember to be creative and have fun
safe turning..

Hi Rob, Great experiment and I think the results speak for themselves. If you want a faint colour then seal and if you want full colour then don't seal. Great video. Take care Rob. Cheers, Huw

Thanks for watching, certainly considering I used oak with very open grain, I think if I had used a tight gran wood the difference would be even more dramatic, maybe if I sealed and sanded the result may be different again but still the instructions are pretty clear

Thanks for this Rob , I have just recently purchased an airbrush and some water based wood dyes and this experiment is helpful. Cheers, Bram

we have seen the great results you will achieve if you seal after Hampshire sheen intrinsic dyes are applied, ill do another piece soon following the correct way to apply intrinsic dyes, this was the result i honestly expected but hadn't tried.

Sealing the wood before colour is something I've thought about many times. Maybe less sealer or maybe in patches could create some interesting effects. Spirit stain maybe worth exploring. As you know I'm always looking for something different.

The specific question was regarding Hampshire sheen water based intrinsic dyes so I expected these results, I don’t have any experience with spirit stains but my understanding of ‘stain’ is that it is absorbed into the material, and sealing the wood prevents this. Worth a play with though All the best Rob

The only reason I can find to apply sealer before the dye is to ensure that the wood absorbs de dye in a more uniform way, avoiding spots. Even though, I would have sanded back the sealer with 320 grit or higher before applying the dye. That way, the difference wouldn't be so pronounced.
@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning
@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning 3 года назад
that may well be true, maybe further investigation, but honestly ive not yet had that problem, there are many turners using these dyes as per instructions with fantastic results. but i understand there are many ways to get to the end result.

That's a useful video. Could you continue your experiment by using Yorkshire Grit? I'd like to see what happens
@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning
@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning 2 года назад
I use Yorkshire grit on most of my turnings It is a fine abrasive paste so takes care of the finer sanding without traditional dry paper sanding

@@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning Cool. Did this test piece look significantly different after Yorkshire Grit treatment?
@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning

@@Shtanto this test piece was specifically intended to test the dyes prior to sealing and after sealing Yorkshire grit makes a very significant difference to your finished turnings

Given that you are located in Canada, what are you using for denatured alcohol since you can't actually buy DNA in Canada?
@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning
@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning 3 года назад
you can buy it in Canada but its not called denatured alcohol, i understand the restrictions were due to people drinking it? i think, but i believe it is not intended or safe to drink, i'm no chemist. read the ingredients on certain products to find it.

@@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning That is the problem I've run into. What is the name of the product you are buying? I used to be able to get ethanol stove fuel from Canadian Tire but they no longer sell it. Looking for a suitable replacement.
@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning
@WoodsleeSummercraftwoodturning 3 года назад
exactly, bio flame, at CT, fortunately i purchased a lot of it when it was available, i recommend a feed warehouse that supply stuff for horses etc, you'll find they sell alcohol that is essentially the same product, you want something that pulls oil and dust out of wood and vaps off quickly.

I’m in Mississauga, ON, and get my DA from Quebec. evofinition.ca/en/product/denatured-alcohol-evo/ A couple of us buy a couple of big bottles at a time and split the shipping cost. Usually delivered in 2 or 3 days. It’s worth the shipping costs rather than the aggravation of searching all over for it!

I have watched your channel for a very long time and as a 3rd generation woodworker and wood turner I have just one observation. Please seek out a good finishing course and learn how to stain, dye and finish with a wide range of finishes. I rest my case.

James, Thankyou for watching How about you put some content out on your channel and show us all. As a 4th generation woodturner teaching my sons 5th generation I feel I am doing ok. I do seek professional advise from a close friend that has 40 years of wood turning and art experience . Everybody you talk to will have their own way of doing things, strengths and weaknesses. This was as stated just a comparison re sealing before or after

James, an accusation without content is not a case. A real man would back up his words or retract them.
