On Saturday, May 23 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., members of the public got a rare opportunity to check out the inner workings of the TTC at its central service yard at 400 Greenwood Ave., just a few blocks south of Danforth Avenue, during the 16th annual Door Open Toronto festival.
The Greenwood Yard, which celebrated its 50 years of service this year, is a busy facility that serves as both a rail yard for all of the Bloor-Danforth line’s subway vehicles as well as a service shop.
Visitors toured various workshops within the yard. People also had a train ride through the subway vehicle “car wash” and the yard.

That was an excellent show. It is the video that I have been waiting to see--the inside of a car maintenance shop. It appears to be well-equipped to accommodate a wide variety of trains, all in one house.

They forgot to put the most famous thing of the TTC in the shop... ...the door chime.

Wow, I would have loved to see that! The Greenwood site used to be a clay quarry (note nearby Torbrick Road) that was later a garbage dump covered in up to 75 feet of garbage - equal to the length of the subway cars serviced there! For Greenwood's 50th anniversary, TTC should have named the main Rail Car Shops the Bardsley Shops, after the late Leonard W. Bardsley, their equipment manager who developed the 75-foot subway car. He died in 1985; his son Tim was a Calgary alderman in the LRT-building 1980s there.

In the future when the next Greenwood yard open house opens in the future we should see a TR in the yard.

All TTC subway cars from the G cars through to the T1s, operated in married pairs. One car in each pair carries the batteries and motor-generator set for the pair; the other carries the compressor.
