To the Manor Born is a British sitcom that originally aired from 1979 to 1981, with a special revival episode in 2007. Created by Peter Spence, the show is set in the English countryside and centers around the life of Audrey fforbes-Hamilton, a once-wealthy aristocrat, played by Penelope Keith. After her husband's death, Audrey is forced to sell her beloved family estate, Grantleigh Manor, due to financial difficulties.
The manor is purchased by Richard DeVere, a wealthy self-made businessman of Eastern European descent, played by Peter Bowles. Much of the comedy revolves around the culture clash between the traditional, upper-class Audrey and the new-money Richard, as they navigate their lives in close proximity. Audrey, despite her fall from grace, continues to act as though she still holds social superiority, while Richard strives to fit in with the English gentry.
