I'm 108 chapters in and at no point is romantic attraction ever remotely implied and by that point the parallels to how Kafka treats her and the way her dad WANTED to treat her are spelled out in plain En- ...Japanese, whatever. Ask a writing tutor and they're probably gonna tell you that this is a well-known narrative strategy: A problem is detailed (dad wants to be a father figure but forfeits it to be a hardass mentor; she's missing a father figure and emotionally starved) either before or after the solution is introduced (an older man who's CONSISTENTLY presented as protective, heroic, self-sacrificing, a caregiver through and through, steps in to provide that missing element: a doting father) It's basically just *thematic writing 101*. Everything in the narrative points to a father/daughter relationship, not a romantic one.

@@DiscoKnack I understand why you see that but it’s a bit different, Reno and Kafka have a obvious Mentor-apprenticeship role established very quickly, he even calls him sir because he respects him for his courage and bravery when saving him for the first time despite not being a JDF member. Kimiko I think that’s her name, it can be either way as she could fall in love with him not putting all this pressure and expectations, while being able to rely on him and trust him. She trusted him to not kill her daddy one of the people she idolizes. I’m leaning towards her having romantic feelings for him.
