I’m watching this presentation for about the 5th time. I’ve seen more recent videos on this topic and always click away from them to go back for a refresher with Dr CG. These days, no one seems to think about how the voice production of a presenter affects how effective his/her will be. I live on the coast of BC’s lower mainland, so I really appreciate both Dr CG’s work and his ability to make science “talk” to us in such an interesting manner. Yours in Gratitude

First time at seeing this Ted Talk. Your story came up after I had watched another channel about shake warning on the Oregon coast. I remember seeing on your post also covering the Cascadia shaking and was happy to see the story come up. Mt. hood C C. This is where I took my studies in electronics.

i just had a dream where we were up here at our cabin in the cascade mountains. and the wind started blowing hard, then a violent shaking began. toppling a couple of our trees out here. i was astouded at the power. being 60 miles east of i5. i had a dream years ago, and a great voice said Mt. Hood will bow into the sea, i feel maybe the willamette valley may be filled with sea water when the really big one happens. flowing up the columbia and up the willamette. thats the only way i could see this vision coming to fruition. the time is short for sure

Found this while looking for information on the tsunami warning in alaska today.

The problem is that we love stories and warnings about events like this but we never do anything about it, we may even exacerbate it. Then when the event does happen and kills a bunch of people we pick up the pitchforks and demand answers as to why nothing was done to prevent all the destruction in the first place and the people in charge will just offer up the same old cookie cutter response, something along the lines of "We offer our deepest condolences and offer thoughts and prayers to all those affected, we have simply failed you and will learn from our mistakes and will do better next time". Then we'll all forget about it in a few weeks and nothing will be done because who cares? The next big one will be hundreds of years away, it's their problem now.

The city of Hilo, Hawaii was devastated by two tsunamis, in 1946 and 1960. Hundreds of people were killed. After the second one, a portion of the ruined urban area was raised by landfill and then built upon, but the bulk of what had been downtown Hilo was permanently turned into parks. More than 50 years have subsequently passed without another major disaster, but it will happen again, and when it does, fortunately a lot of people simply will no longer be in the way in this one location.

Why Americans will "Let it happen"; because their mind-set is: "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it." Preparations has to be on an 'individual' basis. Good luck.

As a resident of the northwest.. i believe its time to relocate . Although the prediction is anytime within the next 50 years.. buts waiting until it happens to do something is to late. The northwest will be history, i dont wanna be around when a 100ft tsunami crushes the coast and turns eastern washington into the next seattle.

Thank you for all of your work and speech... 👏👍 I live/have lived in Newport/Yaquina bay my whole (34 years) and they are still building/or have built those buildings down along Hatfield drive on that sand spit shown at the end of this speech, which No Doubt would be wiped clean, though, I must say that those buildings look sturdy/concrete...etc But I wouldn't want to be down there in the event of a tsunami, and luckily, one could be up on the bridge on your way into Newport in few minutes from those new buildings on the spit in (South Beach) which is located across Yaquina bay to the north 3/4 of a mile and from the Newport bridge north along the beach/town of Newport is a 30-40 foot cliff side that basically runs the length of Newport to the North approx 3-ish miles with a couple of small ravines that would/could allow water to come up/in the town itself, that, and the fact that everything south of the Newport bridge (north side) is wide open, sea level, No cliffs for 30-40 miles in which towns like South Beach, Seal Rock, Waldport, Yachats, would All be devastated and then the cliffs begin again for a few miles at the south end of Yachats, Sea lion Caves, Cape Perpetua, Heceta Head, but then goes right back down to sea level at Florence and stays that way pretty much clear down to California... Having said that, I've always wondered, all things considered, (Newport sits on a cliff 30-40 feet above sea level on cliff side, wide open, no cliff, south of Newport) if somehow these factors would possibly be the towns saving grace, but now, I think I have pretty much lost all that confidence considering that the ground is expected to drop some 30-50 FEET 😮😲😨😬😩🤞 I can't tell you how appreciative I am to know this knowledge, thanks again to All involved with this research... 🙇‍♂️🤝🤜

Mr. Goldfinger, can anyone explain how the Chimacum (who only spoke a whistled the bird like language of the Quileut), ended up on the shores of Port Hadlock? They must have been transported by Tsunami.

I remember my introduction to Plate Techtonics, reading The New Scientist magazine riding on the London Underground in 1966. Interesting. Regarding what will be done about it? Just pray that our reaction is more positve than our reaction to Climate Change.

A very interesting presentation.. although I'm hoping re-engineering of the areas in danger will be finished long before any such destructive event. I'm wondering how the Pacific North West are sleeping at night at the moment.

Interesting how the whale subducts ,lives under the sea and Thunderbird fliys or lifts up.

Great Guy Dr. Goldfinger. I am at 8 ft. Above Sea Level. 24 miles east of a massive sea. 14 feet will reach me . They never had data of Juan de fuca?

So what good is building everything on top of artificial mounds, unless you take it to extremes? Places in Japan got 20+ meters inundation and 40+ meters run-up. One city in Japan declined to build 15+ meter walls: concrete is only good for ~50 years, then it's only half as strong. Many places had modest 5 or 6 meter walls, and they found that with adequate warning, that short height gave several more minutes for people to get away and to high ground.

Cascadia is also missing a trench. I think it's the longest trench-less subduction zone in the world.

I heard when "The Big One" aka the Cascadia Subduction Zone gets hit, that the tsunami will not only wipe out Seattle, but also Portland. Chris made one very brief comment that we don't have to worry about Portland. I live in a suburb of Portland, and I'm actually in one of the last towns you come across when leaving Portland, and going up HWY 26 to cross the mountain range to get to the coast (usually Seaside or Cannon Beach). I'm wondering if this tsunami will reach high enough levels to cross the mountain range, and flood Portland. I mean according to a news broadcast I watched, they claimed that's what would happen, and everything west of I-5 would be wiped out. I've been really scared about that. I think I could handle the earthquake, but not a tsunami coming to drown us all. I'm deathly afraid of water, and I honestly don't want to die from a wave of the ocean carrying my house away, and wiping out all life in its path. However, I think it'd be impossible for a tsunami to reach over 3,000 feet in elevation, to cross over the coastal range. So, I don't know why the news broadcast made it seem like a tsunami will wipe out Portland, Seattle, and everything west of I-5. I used to live in Seattle, so I understand it's a real threat for them, because they are along the puget sound, which is a bay off the ocean, but Portland is protected by 3,500 foot coastal range mountains. I'd like a clear answer as to whether I have anything to worry about, so if anyone has some insight, I'd be so appreciative. Thanks!

Yes, he makes good points. The tectonic plates slipping is an old theory that isn't correct. Dutchsinse is the one to listen to.

What if the land is going to sink and get totally submerged in water like the one awaiting Los Angeles...IS THERE NEED FOR PREPARATION.

There is nothing to do but bury the bodies and rebuild after the quake and tsunami. When a 100 ft wave comes at you, really no building will be left standing in the lower laying areas. And in a mega quake no building will be left undamaged. Perhaps the best thing you can do is move out of the low laying western coastal cities and buy earthquake insurance.

Seattle would get about 3' of water. Not enough to put out the fires.

I don't think we are ready for this. It's going to be a nightmare so get ready. Any year now and it's going to snap. A lot of work will be created; because it's too beautiful there to just let it rot like New Orleans. And the Pacific Northwest isn't below Sea Level like New Orleans is and the weather is much better here.

Let's see there were regular earthquakes occurring 13 times in 7,000 years. On average they occur every 538 years. With the last big earthquake occurring in 1700, one could estimate the next "big one" will occur around 2238 in that region. If building policies changed now so that all future building/repairs were ready for expected tremors and tsunamis, there would be minimal expense, compared to fixing cities after being washed away.

Well its almost 2024, that whole area will be absolutely devestated by the tsunami. Better prepare.
