People need to remember that just because a joke isn't funny doesn't mean it wasn't a joke. The context is what matters. If someone says or does things you don't like then you are well within your right to not watch anything they do or support anything involving them. The issue with cancel culture is it's people trying to take that option away from people and try to take away their platform. Unfortunately it's only going to get worse.

Words have become more important than actions in the last 5 years. That's a genuine massive problem. The type of person who "stans" Cardi B on Twitter, will call out someone for a joke, while defending someone who used to drug people.

I truly believe cancel cultural is purely based on jealousy. Some people hate seeing anyone else succeeding in life and it’s just sad. Don’t get me wrong there is definitely people out there that have been cancelled that deserve it but I do believe if people can show that they have changed and are trying to be a better person then they deserve a second chance

The problem is social media has given people the idea that every single opinion they have about every situation is relevant and needs to be shared to the world. If they've seen a tiktok about a subject they think they know enough to start preaching their opinions to people. The delusion, entitlement and self importance of it all is wild.

It's not just cancel culture, it's Stan culture as well. These kids borderline worship their favourite celebs to the point where anything their celeb says becomes their gospel. A celeb may advocate for trans rights, but the Stan takes that and turns it into a way to attack those who don't stan the same person/compete with the celeb in question

I think people forget there’s a difference between cancel culture and being held accountable

People just lack self love and aren't happy with themselves these days. That's why this is a thing

I hate that if someone changes they are still treated as if they are still the person they were a couple years ago. Whats the point of wanting people to change and then treating them like they were before?

Finally! Influences are now starting to grow some ball and say no to this BS. Average folk do not have the platform to stop this, it's the influences that have to stand up with the average person.

im so glad more people are talking about the toxicity of cancel culture. what stevie said really resonated with me. at secondary school when I was about 13 me and my mates use to say the n word to each other because I literally thought it was a synonym for 'mate' and had never heard it in it's racial context (im from a small village and everyone at my school was white) but as soon as I learned the deeply offensive nature of the word I have never ever used it since and would never dream of saying it. the sad thing is though that if I was famous I would 100% be cancelled and branded as racist because of PURE ignorance.

Main thing is that people cancel people without context or without looking into the situation

Can we appreciate the distinction between cancel culture and holding people accountable. Lots of people take it too far and try and look for any reason to cancel influencers which is what you're talking about. However, ultimately if a content creator is holds views that I find offensive, eg. transphobic/homophobic/racist, then it is fine for me to stop watching and supporting them

What astounds me is that people are normalising what is basically a mob court mostly made up of anonymous children, being the judge, jury and executioner of people's careers usually without context. Imagine if we had a real life court system where the judge and jury were children that refused to listen to context or opposing arguments to decide a verdict

This hits hard, a week ago my favourite youtuber is in bad condition in the hospital because he was cancelled last year for something he did 7 years ago

I think that since social media reached its top, it is so hard to be original and to gain appreciation. Basically because everyone is trying to be original and be themselves, it's hard to do when everything has been seen before. Then you're called a copy. Therefore people feel the need to bring down others or go to extremes just to feel validated and forcing yourself to be something you are not, meanwhile fooling yourself that "this is you" because this version of yourself is getting recognition and the real "you" is not.

i think if someone says something that’s like racist or homophobic or what ever, i think we should give them the chance to learn and educate them on why that’s wrong but if they keep making those mistakes and saying certain stuff, that’s when they don’t deserve their platform

Love how people say you can still be racist or homophobic or whatever if you have friends that are gay, black, whatever, I understand that kind of. But when you become friends with so many of these people and grow to love them, then say something or make a joke about them or their culture or whatever, surely if you have all these friends that are black for example and you’ve made a “racist” joke. I think social scientists could do entire research projects on this stuff. I don't think I can even begin to do it justice... I do wonder if it's the same mentality that leads to people being radicalised online. You get a person or group that is seen as undesirable by someone else, who then exaggerates their apparent negative qualities as a threat to a way of life. If you push that narrative hard enough, a fair few people will become convinced it is fact, and even in the face of contrary evidence will not change their opinion. Public figure immaturely calling someone "gay" as if that was an insult (10 years ago) -> strip context -> post online -> add inflammatory language and accusations of homophobia & bigotry -> a combination of people who have never heard of you & people who have an inherent dislike of you decide you are scum of the earth and can't be convinced otherwise.

Not-guilty until proven otherwise is such an important factor in our justice system. Without it we're lost. Who are the people that like to cancel to decide whether someone is guilty or not? If someone is actually guilty of something, that person will get punished or 'cancelled' by the justice system. Let normal people decide who's guilty or not, and everything goes to shit. I think a good example is Johnny Depp's case. He was cancelled massively, while now it seems that for the most things he got cancelled for, he didn't even do it.
