To Parents and Teachers:
My parents were from the old school of “Because I said so.” We were taught not to ask why. Today, parents and teachers spend more time explaining the whys. The Toby books are meant to help young children understand some of the whys behind the dos and don’ts of life.
How well children understand allegories depends very much upon age and maturity. It is up to parents and teachers to gauge when children are ready for these concepts. It does not hurt to present the story and then later, when the time is right, discuss the underlying lessons.
It is our hope and prayer that children will find these books engaging and ask to read them over and over.
Use the following discussion questions one or two at a time, not all at once. Save some for the next time the book is read through.
How did his family show Toby love? They cared for him.
Who loves you and cares for you? Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, Teacher...
How did Toby show love for his family? He obeyed when they called him.
Was Toby’s fence a good or a bad thing? Why? The fence was a good thing because it kept Toby safe from danger.
Were the squirrels Toby’s friends? Why or why not? The squirrels were not Toby’s friends. They did not care if bad things happened to Toby.
What did Toby learn about obeying? It is better to obey than not to obey.
How was Toby saved from the gully? Father came, picked him up, and carried him home.
Father loved Toby even when he disobeyed.
We have a heavenly Father who loves us and will care for us. When we disobey it makes God sad, but He still loves us very much.
Parents know what dangers are all around us. They protect us from danger. We show we love our parents when we obey them.
