“21 Years” is a song I wrote about the recent passing of my firstborn son, Truett Foster McKeehan. I loved him with all my heart. Until something in life hits you this hard, you never know how you will handle it. I am thankful that I have been surrounded by love, starting with God’s and extending to community near and far that have walked with us and carried us every day. Writing this song felt like an honest confession of the questions, pain, anger, doubt, mercy and promise that describes the journey I’m probably only beginning. The rest is yet to come. One thing I know is that I am not alone. God didn’t promise us a life of no pain or even tragic death, but He did promise He would never leave us or forsake us. And I’m holding dearly to that promise for my son as well as myself.

It happened when I was extremely young but my father said my grandfather lost all his faith the moment she fell ill and became bitter. Lost my daughter in 4 months to an aggressive cancer in her later 20’s with 2 lil ones. But my faith never failed, because I knew God would heal her here or she would be healed with him. No more pain, or scars, just in his arms and each day I KNOW we will be together again ❤❤❤

I lost my baby brother at the age of 8 in a car accident. My parents crumbled mentally and physically after that. My childhood was rough and as a result, I became a broken atheist with no hope for my life. God was the ONLY thing that healed my heart and it's been 5 years since I've surrendered my life to Him. He healed me and I haven't cried for my brother since. This song however, brought me to tears, thinking of my bro being in the arms of Jesus. I'm so thankful for the hope that rests in Him alone! Praise God! Thank you Toby Mac for making this beautiful song.

I overdosed at 22 years old. God saved me and brought me back. Not everyone gets that heavenly blessing. I thank God for sparing the lives of my mother, father, and brother. I lost my son 6-10-21. He struggled with addiction all his 29 years. He accepted Jesus in 2018 but his battle continued. He died from a seizure in a rehab facility. This song touched my heart. I have said many of those words to God the past year and a half. I too am grateful for my son and look forward to the day we can be together again. Prayers for you and the work you do Toby.

The emotion in this song is powerful enough to make a childless teenage girl feel the pain of a father who lost his son. The line "catch you when you steal my shoes" probably hit me the hardest, as it reminded me of all the times I stole my mom's shoes before my feet got to be bigger than hers and all the times I continually "borrow" her leggings, socks, dance clothes, etc. I loved the ending, how even in the grief he was able to thank God for the years he did have with his son. It gives me hope that I'll be able to hold on to joy and not let all my insignificant little hurdles bog me down.

Odina Rose I lost my beautiful 18 year old son just a few months ago. We buried him with my husband’s converse because he stole them every day during his high school days. They were scuffed, ripped and dirty- but so beautiful to me because of the understanding and story behind them. I mourn my son every single day and know that I will never ever be the same. @@raeljose4548 Because of her cerebral palsy she was often targeted by doctors for unnecessary surgeries and anything else that they could use to get money out of medicaid, even if it meant killing her to do it. I have intercepted a few attempts. Through a lot of deception and making a lot of weird medical mistakes that made no sense whatsoever and withholding information from me they killed my daughter. I believe that she is with Jesus in Heaven, but it still hurts because I feel like I failed her and could not protect her this time. Thank you for your condolences.

Our daughter Katelyn died at 21, 10 years ago. I have to be honest, I was very depressed, so much so that I found myself sitting on the side of my bed many times rocking, crying, and praying asking the Father why. Each day was I felt God's arms always wrapped around me and speaking peace into my spirit. Her dad felt the same way. We just didn't understand. We didn't realize that God was ministering to us the whole time. At some point, my oldest spoke words of truth to me. She said, "Mom, You don't need to understand why Kate went to be with the Lord right now, but the Lord and she would want you to live and give witness to what He's done since she's with Him in paradise. You will see her again!" Those words said in love broke the yoke of oppression that was like a dark cloud over my life. I reached out for help and through that help began to help others through the "club that no one wants to be in." We've been able to wrap our arms around other parents who will walk a similar path after they lost their child that we walked and how God began to not let us live the same life we lived before as a family, but a different one that totally changed our perspective. God's will be ministering to you along the way, Toby and family, and I pray you'll continue to feel his presence as you move forward one step at a time. My 22 yr old middle son Joshua hung himself at our home on July 2, 2005. The pain of loosing him is still fresh and I still cry for him. I believe the longer they are gone the more you miss them. It’s nice when I have a “good “ dream about him. It’s like having a mini visit with him. Not all of my dreams are good. Sometimes I have PTSD from some of my dreams. I thought loosing him would be the death of me. God is so amazing! He helps us get through the things that we don’t think we can get through and He gives us strength when we don’t think we have anything left within us to make it through each step of the way. I just listened to your song and my heart hurts for you and your family. I pray that God stays right with each of you and your family that is suffering through this loss with you. May you gain your strength from God and comfort from the Holy Spirit. It’s only by the grace of God that we are able to keep going and the knowledge that we will see them again. I was diagnosed with progressive white matter brain disease and CADASIL about 2 years ago and have had several mini strokes with each one taking part of my abilities away. Your brain controls everything in your body and my neurologist says I have too many lesions in my brain to count. As my quality of life decreases I’m looking forward to seeing my Joshua again. I miss his hugs and the way he had of always making us laugh. I will see him again in God’s timing. You will see your beautiful son again too but until then remember God will always be there with you.

ALEXIS Murphy keep hanging on! The dr told us that the reason was weak cervix and that we would always have pre mature births. Well we just held on to God, but nervous in the flesh sometimes that it would happen again. The thought of that pain again was indescribable! Well we stayed close to God, and didn’t give up. Our next baby we had a healthy baby girl full term on a Christmas morning! And Now God has blessed us with 4 full term baby girls. Two of which my wife had to be induced on. My little brother died not long before Truett did, at the same age. He died not far from your alma matar, and one of the later pictures taken of him was with you after a concert. We all suffered when Jonathan died, but no one like my parents--having seen first hand what it does to a parent to lose their young son, with all the world ahead of him, I really feel for you. Through tears, though, I am struck by the hope and the joy in this song. It is absolutely amazing how you have imagined and pictured God's love for your child, and I know that hope of things not seen carries other parents suffering the same thing. It's been about 40 days and nights now since I lost my 21 year old baby boy and God has been right here with me through it all. This song is perfect, these are all the same thoughts and feelings I have had since it happened. Someday soon Toby we will be running to our baby boys and we'll never have to leave them again. He was my son, best friend, soulmate and advisor. This song really hits me hard. We lost our son 6/14 after several years battling depression. He was 21. Would have been 22 on 8/6. The rememberances from friends, family, and strangers have been very humbling to know just how big his heart is. It was easy for him to be there for those that were hurting, since he knew what they were feeling. Nothing hurts worse than the parents left on earth without their child. But my faith is stronger than ever as it really shows what a blessing from God we had to be chosen as his parents...

My little brother passed when he was 10 and I was 15, then my Mom passed away in 2005, my sister in 2013 and my dad in 2015. Some people have asked me how I don’t curl in a ball and cry, and trust me I do, but I have that hope, I know I will get to see them again. My faith has been the only thing to keep me going. Every time I listen to this song, I end up bawling my eyes out, because no one has ever been able to put into words how I feel, the questions that I have until this song. Thank you!

Depends on your perspective. Some folks might not find it appropriate to have children placed so much in the limelight. Y'know, the appearance of exploitation or a denied childhood. It may not have been like that - I don't know - but when someone is a high-profile artist, folks are going to pay more attention to the public image than the whole picture.

3 teenage boys at my church were murdered last month and this song was played at their Celebration of life. It was an incredibly touching event. I had no idea that this was written by Toby Mac, but now knowing that the passing of his son is what inspired him to write it makes the song all the more appropriate for the passing of those boys. @TobyMac I lost my son 12 and a 1/2 years ago he was 31and knew Jesus is his savior. I lost my daughter November 19th 2021 She was 41 I lost my sister my best friend 2 weeks later she was 61. They all knew Jesus as their savior and I will see them again Hallelujah praised the Lord thank you Jesus.... We will celebrate happy heaven day for my 2 newest losses like we have for my son the past 12 years!! They were tragic losses and they weren't surprising but still shocking talking making the choices if they did I'm did I am glad they are out of their torment their torture and their pain And are now healed and with the Lord.

You expressed your pain so beautifully that I couldn't help, but cry as hard as if I knew him or you. I pray for you and your family during this hard journey. As a father, I can’t imagine how many times you must have prayed for your son! I lay here in bed (divorced) and my sons (and daughters) are with my ex. Miss them like crazy!! I will never forget the day my firstborn son was born. The happiest and saddest day of my life. We were so overjoyed and everything was going as planned, 4 hours later our full term little boy was rushed out of the room and we were told to prepare for the worst as his chances of survival were slim to none. I will never forget the image of him being wheeled away to the helicopter as my wife and I sat there helpless. God performed a miracle and our son is alive today. I have watched this song over a dozen times and still can’t get through it. I can feel that emptiness all over again every time I hear it. I don’t think those scars will ever truly go away. I remember bargaining with God to take me home instead. I can’t imagine life without my son. So glad God heals the broken and gives us comfort in our eternal destination. To God be the glory in all things, even in those times of unexplained grief. ❤️

My One True Love, My Son, went to heaven on February 3, 2019. I heard your song only 1 time on KLOVE & it touched my heart. I actually broke down on my drive. Today I watched the video & the only comfort I have is knowing my Jacob was & is a child of God! He is in Gods arms & in my heart forever. This is by far the worst my heart has ever had to face. He was my only child, my mothers only grandchild and the 1st person in ALL my family to go to heaven. This is so hard, every day, but I honestly feel if it wasn't for the love & peace that was given to me by Jesus, I would probably be so miserable. I know Jacob is dancing on streets of gold & this is the only thing that comforts me. I trust you Lord, I love you Lord & I thank you for blessing me with 19 beautiful years with my Jacob Reino Montgomery. All my Hope is in you Lord.

It always hit me when I heard those lyrics at the end of “Steal My Show”: “My dreams; my fears; my family; my career-take it away,” And I thought, “Man, that could be an expensive prayer.” And I always marveled at the boldness-just putting it all out there, the complete surrender. Of course, we should all do that, but to step right up and say it so publicly-it was always a challenge to me: am I willing to say that, to truly leave the most precious things in my life completely in God’s hands, to say it out loud? Now God is making you live it, my brother. And I can hardly imagine. But we are not our own. May He give you grace through the valley. May He cause your light to shine brighter than ever for Him.
