Toccata and Fugue in F-major, BWV 540
Johann Sebastian Bach
David Kriewall, organ
University of Washington graduate recital
Saint Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, Seattle
June 8, 2014
Full recital: • 2014 Graduate Recital ...
Program notes:
Bach’s Toccata in F major (BWV 540) begins with a large linear canon (one hand imitating the other) over a long pedal point in F major. This is followed by an improvisatory pedal solo based on material from the canon. The entire canon is repeated with hands reversed, and is again followed by a long pedal solo. The canons and pedal solos effect a modulation from the home key of F to the dominant of C; and the entire remainder of the movement constitutes the harmonic return to home base. Hermann Keller expresses his rapture as follows: "At the beginning the extensive linear construction of the two voices in canon, the proud calmness of the solos in the pedal, the piercing chord strokes, the fiery upswing of the second subject, the bold modulatory shifts, the inwardness of the three minor movements, the splendor of the end with the famous third inversion of the seventh chord - who would not be enthralled by that?"

Sheer majesty. And thank God he also plays the fugue. Many clips here unfortunately only feature the toccata.

this has got to be the greatest thing ever written by a human being... never mind it being a cannon... just a glorification of god

I grew up listening to this piece. And after all these years, watching a RU-vid video on it makes me love it even more.

Sir! What a wonderful performance! I salute you! It has presence and command of the music. You played it as I imagine Bach himself would have performed it. The real beauty is in the descending line of the pedal and you brought that to life. Thank you! Bach still lives.

Wow, are you kidding.!! OK, I'm an old fat idiot Hippie, but I studied classical organ music in the early 1970's, My dad gave me an album of Micheal Schneider on the Lunenburg organ. It is the finest and best interpretation of Bach's organ music, IMHO...I ever heard.......Dave, wow!!......I've never heard it better than yours since Micheal. Thank you. .....Thank you....These performances by you, took me back to my childhood. So many people have interpreted Bach's organ music...in different ways......wow, your interpretation....is a wow....you are great talent....Thank you for posting this for all of us to enjoy.

What a beautiful performance on such a wonderful instrument for Bach. I have personally played this piece, on this organ back in my youth, but not nearly as flawlessly.

I think this is the most magnificent performance I have ever heard of this monumental Toccata and Fugue! It is my favourite of all Bach's organ works. Who else would have had the guts to write the F-pedal to be held for the first 32 bars? Epic performance of an epic work!

+Higgs Boson Correction: There's not 32 bars, but 54, and another 54 on the 2nd. part when changes to a C

Great performance. I love the instrument, too. I've had the fortune to play a Flentrop organ in the Netherlands on a regular basis when I grew up in the Netherlands.

Hi Tom, Good question. The only reason (and it is a poor one, I admit) is that in my original program notes (4 pages), I ran out of room; and I had so much I would have wanted to say about the fugue that I decided not to say anything, instead of giving it short shrift (or Schrift, as Bach would have said. :-) You are right, the fugue is fantastically constructed. The second fugue subject is drawn from the first fugue's countersubject, so it is a bit of a surprise when the second fugue (second section) begins; it takes a while to dawn on the listener what Bach just did. The symmetries of the Toccata are everywhere and easily heard because they are so sequential; the fugue (in my opinion) needs repeated hearings to discern the overlapping symmetries. Every time I play it through, it seems I discover some new nuance. Bach writes fugues so naturally that one almost would believe that he could take any two fugue subjects and combine them convincingly. Thanks for your interest! -Dave

Wonderful, energetic performance by David Kriewall! Perfectempo! Excellent videography. For the sections not having the pedal arpegios, I change to the Oberwerk. A welcome relief and contrast. Audience can't hold their applause - like after the 3rd movement of Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony. (Or else many don't know how to read the program.) 10:46 Changing to the Oberwerk would have been a welcome relief.12:31 Mordent? Again at 12:57! 13:06 in the pedal! Wonderful!

Is that a tracker or some kind of hybrid tracker-electropneumatic? I see the manual keys moving with the pedals, but I also see short-throw drawknobs and an electronic interface.
@DaveKriewall
@DaveKriewall 5 лет назад
It's a tracker -- all mechanical keyboards and connections to the tone valve under the pipe -- but the combination action is electric, with solenoids to move the sliders on the chests. The 3-digit LED readout indicates memory bank for presets.
@arthurserino2254
@arthurserino2254 5 лет назад
@@DaveKriewall fascinating, but if you're going to go to the trouble of putting in electronic draw knobs, why not just make the action electrical as well?
@DaveKriewall
@DaveKriewall 5 лет назад
@@arthurserino2254 Because mechanical action allows the organist finer-grained control over attack and release characteristics of the pipes. Most electric actions are simply on-off; when the key is depressed to the point of making electrical contact, the valve under the pipe just opens immediately. With a mechanical connection, the weight of the arm or finger are transferred to the valve; it can be opened slower or faster. It would be like replacing all pianos with electric keyboards; the 'touch' is removed.
@arthurserino2254
@arthurserino2254 5 лет назад
@@DaveKriewall it doesn't allow for that much expression with an organ. It doesn't even compare to the touch sensitivity of a piano
@DaveKriewall
@DaveKriewall 5 лет назад
@@arthurserino2254 I did not mean to imply that the touch of a tracker organ compares with that of a piano; I meant that there is a difference in the touch between a tracker and electric action organ, just as there is a difference between a mechanical piano and an electric keyboard. The mechanical actions provide the performer a certain feel and control that is missing in the electrically activated counterparts. Not unlike the difference between a manual transmission and an automatic transmission in a car. Some prefer one over the other.

Why were there no program notes on the Fugue? It is every bit as good as the Toccata, especially since it is actually a DOUBLE fugue! It has been overshadowed by the Toccata for much, MUCH too long!!

Tom Nichol Possibly, because it is not known to be the actual fugue for this composition by Back!
