...I was finally able to visit the Thomaskirche in June of 1994 on my return trip to Berlin with my late brother, Tim, who had been living there with his girlfriend since 1987...previously I hadn't been able to travel to the East because of my job in the Army...thought I'd NEVER get to see Bach's chruch and tomb - until the Berlin Wall fall fell on the night of my 40th birthday in 1989

Great performance and nice to hear this romantic organ which is (understandably) upstaged by the newer instrument. Prof Bohme seems a very versatile musican: a great performance.

Probably the best rendition of this piece on RU-vid.
@aartvenema1219

I agree that this is very good indeed , but saying this is probably the best rendition of this (marvellous) piece wouldn't do right to organists like Jonathan Scott or Frederick Hohman for example. They play it also flawless, at least this is my humble opinion..
@SuperRede4u
@SuperRede4u 4 года назад
@@aartvenema1219 Another great rendition is one by Janez Rus. Found by accident then went down the rabbit hole of comparing the various performers. Apparently the original composer prefers it played with a more controlled tempo, and thought most people of the day were playing it faster than he prefers. The faster tempo on some make it sound rushed, like the organist is late for supper and just wanted to go home.

@@SuperRede4u If you want to be annoyed by a certain organist, search for : martin mans widor. This is a typical example of: How do I ruin a beautiful piece of music like this as fast as possible? And yes, there will be people saying Aart Venema, who are you to make a judgement like that? You can't probably play this piece yourself? And I must admit that that's the case, unfortunately..But however, there's nothing wrong with my musical hearing though. Search for some old recordings from Widor himself playing this piece. So frankly, I don't care what people say about me: )

The original Bach organ is gone. The Sauer organ is built between 1885-1889 and was not especially suited for JS Bach. The second organ (white paint) dates from 2000, and is especially built to be close to the original baroque organ sound

French organ music created after Widor does not belong into a church. Even Widor's organ music in most parts does not provide that kind of bonding to Godfather like Bach's does. Yes, of course, just my 2 cents.
@duprattcarol
@duprattcarol 4 года назад
It is the acoustics of the church that makes it sound so magnificent . Read up on Widor and you will know that he wrote his organ symphonies for the Cavaillé-Coll organs and performed this toccata at St-Sulpice.

It seems film director Francis Ford Coppola would agree with you in that he used portions of J.S. Bach's Passacaglia & Fugue in C Minor (BWV 582) to bond with the climactic church baptism scene in his 1972 film The Godfather.

I heard a couple of really tiny slips of the fingers but, apart from that, nothing was wrong note-wise. There's a slight delay between the movements of the hands and the sound of the pipes with this organ, so anyone reading this, try closing your eyes.
