I never understood why so many people beat the crap out of their knives batoning wood. Beating their knives through large knots and rolling the steel, or even worse. Bring a small axe, hatchet, to split your wood and save your knife. You got it right bro. Ray....Oklahoma
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 7 лет назад
I am not adverse to using my knives on smaller, manageable pieces of wood, however, I don't like using them on bigger, knot filled pieces of wood. People complain about their knives rolling or chipping while batonging but much of the time, that will happen when attempting to baton. I am much more comfortable getting the wood as small as I can with an axe/hatchet to save my knife from stress. Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment, Ray! Please don't be a stranger, my friend! -Dave

It comes back to the one tool option ! IF in a survival situation. That knife is all you got. And you've got certain tasks that you HAVE TO do. Can that one tool perform all those tasks?. In that Do or die situation. It's not something that you want to put your knife through in that situation because it's all you got. But if you had to could you survive doing it? And would the knife survive?. It is understanding the worst of the worst of the worst case scenario.

Nice kit! A small handsaw makes it complete! Two edges on the axe, one for splitting, or scraping, one for cutting.

Thanks again for making my morning, I love waking up to a new video from you. My wife and I snowshoed up to a high mountain lake yesterday, it's our go to spot about every weekend in the winter. I used my Granfors Bruks and my new Mora Kansbol with a custom leather sheath, (my new favorite knife!) We got a great fire going, had lunch and some hot tea, there's probably nothing I love more then that. I think of you everytime I'm up there Dave, thanks for doing what you do, it really does mean a lot.

Verry nice Nessmuk trio David. It is good to see history coming back and still have a place in modern days. It gives me an idea... you should tell us a Nessmuk story between making a fire and a cup of coffee, your connection to nature and your relax attitude would make a great awesome video series? Thank you for sharing your wonderfull knowledge of bushcrafting with us David. Yours respectfully -Yves

Thank you for watching and leaving your very nice comment, Yves! Maybe I will tell a story from the Nessmuk book at some point...that is a great idea! I consider myself lucky to have you here, Yves! -Dave

Great video, but something very few people discuss is the size/weight of nessmuk’s gear. His axe was tiny and weighed very little, I believe his axe head weighed under a pound. your axe has a head weighing two pounds, twice Nessmuk’s, and comes with a 22” handle if I remember correctly, at least eight inches longer than Nessmuks... HOWEVER, G.W. Sears (Nessmuk’s given name) was only 5’3” tall and a slim 103 pounds... while he wrote and spoke often about lightweight gear, he was able to go with gear that small and light because it felt adequate in his hands. As a normalish sized contemporary American of six feet tall and 230 pounds, I couldn’t use his tiny gear with great comfort or success (I know because I had copies made that matched his exactly save I had mine made in Damascus), but the gear you chose would work great for me... Tools need to be chosen based on the person who will be using them, that goes not just for style and intended use, but also for fit and weight. Again, great vid, nice choice of tools.

I have been watching a bunch of videos tonight on the whole topic of "should I baton with a knife or split with an axe" I gotta say, I have no dog in this fight. I own choppers and axes. I think this was the most harmonious blend of all these tools. I truly enjoyed this video.

A great video showing the value of the trio, working so very well together. I love your set up and it works very well for you. Mine is slightly different, only because I am unable to get you Axe...But my hatchet's serves me well. I work with a Mora, well everyone should have a few, I know I do, I have a bayonet I had from my time in the forces, a great knife and a great machete, again from my time in. But my go to knife is always a Mora, and maybe my Jacklore. Great video Dave. Dave UK

Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment, Daniel! You are going to love your Opinel #9! They are outstanding knives! If you get a chance, pick up Nessmuk's book "Woodcraft and Camping" ! It's an excellent, fast read and I purchased it for under $10. It's also available on Kindle for even cheaper, but if you like audio books, you can listen to the whole book here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oMbwjzyoAqg.html. There must be something about bushcraft that I'm not understanding because the opinel knives should be way more popular for that. I rarely see anyone using them or recommending them for bushcraft yet they are one of the best woodworking knives I've ever used, excellent blade geometry and sharp spines, easy to sharpen, durable, affordable, lightweight, have very comfortable round handles and a locking mechanism that can't fail. They make perfect companion knives to hatchets, tomahawks or big knives and honestly I hardly ever carry a smaller fixed blade anymore. Appreciated you showing it.

Have you ever tried the LT Wright Genesis Scandi? I think you'd love the shape, steel and design. For a while now my three cutting tools in my kit have been a Genesis scandi, mora 510 for the detailed work and a bacho. I can do anything from splitting (with the mors kochanski method of wedges), to notching , to cleaning fish and small game plus food prep. All three are easy to maintain in the field and are superbly reliable. I use the 510 so much I don't often need the Genesis. But it's such a pleasure to use I can't see leaving it at home. All the best E

Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment, Erick! I have not tried the Genesis, however, as soon as I am in the market for a new knife, I am thinking either the Genesis or the GNS! I love the Mora 510, as well, my friend! -Dave
@erickmo1188
@erickmo1188 7 лет назад
HighCarbonSteel Love I have both. Have had two GNS. And 3 Genesis. All scandi. Each knife that comes from LT is a little different. Some are about .25 inch shorter in the handle but longer in the blade. Others can be just the opposite. That said, their steel is 100% consistent. You seem to love their O1 and the GNS will likely perform very similar to the lagom. (Other than feel and design). The GNS Blade shape will cut similarly to your spyderco. Go with the Genesis and you'll get to experience a different but equally good (if not better) steel as well as an outstanding design that is basically an updated kephart that performs beautifully for all tasks. Just my two cents. Eager to see a vid on whichever you decide to pull the trigger on.

Say Heah Dave, Great video, Thanx You for sharing the Council Velvet Cut Double Bit Hatchet, I can't wait. Although I have a beautiful 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet that actually is a close copy of the Double Bit Hatchet that George Sear's had custom made by Bushnell Optical Co. and I just completed my Wannabe Nessmuk Trio by getting the Adventure Swirn Guide a beautiful white handle Nessmuk Knife and I even got (2) Rough Rider Bone Moose Slipjoint Pocket Knives because they we're on a sake price, Seriously for a 440 stainless, I have mine very sharp and suprisingly they hold a nice edge retention and look great for the $$$, But I think a 2lbs. Diuble Bit Hatchet will be a work horse. My 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet is a lightweight that punches like a heavyweight, It's defenetly not a toy although of it's smallish look's, Great looking Yrio, Dave, But it took me a while to complete my trio because I didn't like the Nessmuk knives that ate out there. Infact I almost bought the Bark River in A2, But when I git the e-mail and my Adventure Sworn wad in 3V, Bingo Bango, Blip, Blap, Blam, Easy Peasy nice and easy I got mine. ,, .

Say Heah Dave, Not too long ago I was strictly a multi knife carry, usually a 3Knife guy. a small/medium/large knife. I still am a multi knife carry, but usually it's a 2Knife carry, I like a large knife because if the span when I baton even when I need to make kindling, Yeah, I like a longer blade. But it took awhile to start using a hatchet, My first was the Estwing Sportsman a 14" er, But when I started to learn about Nessmuk G. W. Sear's, I got my first Double Bit Hatchet a 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet. But then Estwing came out with their ouble bit hatchet and it replaced my Sportsman Hatchet, it's awesome for a beater, I use it alot, I like the weight and always said I wish my 2Hawk Trapper Double Bit was a tich heavier, We'll my dream came true, I luv my 24" Council Wood Craft Pack Axe especially thesteel they use, I like the 5160 for a chopper, Anyhow, I can't wait. Thanx You, Dave. ,, .

Nice set up on the nessmuk tools, I have never been a big fan of the double bladed axe but it's more along the line of a large hatchet, wonder if u can keep one side sheathed while u use the other side? Might have to make a good tight fitting kydex for u to be able to do that. Nice prep on the fire.
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 7 лет назад
I would think if someone wanted to cover up on side while using, kydex would probably be best. To be honest, in using double bit axes over the years, I have never considered covering one side. IMHO, the key is being safe and vigilant. Thank you for watching and leaving your kind words! -Dave

As always - a great video with hands on experience. But I have to ask...your last axe, the Council Tool Wood Craft Pack Axe was the best (at the time). Now it looks like you took to the new Saddle Axe by Council Tool. Which is now your favorite axe that you always reach for when going into the woods? I can only but one of those two. Which do you recommend and why? Thanks for your time and expertise Dave ! ~Michael
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 5 лет назад
Great question, Mick! My favorite is definitely still the WoodCraft Pack Axe. I do, however, love the packability and 2 different grinds on the Saddle Axe and I carry that one more in warmer weather. If I had to recommend one, I would still say the Woodcraft Pack Axe. Much more versatile and while the Saddle Axe is more packable, you cannot beat the size & power combo of a nice 24" axe. Hope this help, my friend! -Dave

I know your a carbon guy...LOL obviously😉 but I gotta say the Mora Garberg is a great knife. Their 14C28N sandvic is really tough stuff, but the knife design is awesome, its hard not to grab it every time I head out, its become my edc as of late. Anyways maybe Mora can deliver on the carbon version? we shall see but for stainless its pretty dang cool.

HighCarbonSteel Love Hey Dave I thought I would update ya on the Garberg. Some folks can get really bent out if shape over knives in this community esp high priced Mora's LOL😄 I say buy it if ya want or don't buy it, to each his own. I've been using it every day now for a couple of months along with other scandi grinds to get a feel for their differences. I measured it up against the Companion, Bushcraft Black, Pro C Robust, Mora 511, Bushlore and just now the Cold Steel Finn Hawk. I know you will understand this because you use knives and most likely every day from what i can tell from your many great vids. All the knives I tested, except for the Bushlore , all do one thing alike, they all want to bight deep into the wood so you have to really keep the knife level when making certain cuts esp feather sticks. I carve a lot almost an hour or more a day so finding a knife that gives me the least resistance is very important for fatigue. A knife might easily cut deep but this also causes more drag and depending on the weight of the knife this can be a big deal, esp for weirdos like me who carve a ton😉 The Garberg has an excellent design, I think its because of the weight do to the thickness and full tang, also the handle shape gives you really good purchase for control. I can cut very precise levels going as deep or as shallow as I want without feeling like I'm fighting with the knife, the edge seems to glide much cleaner through the wood than all my other knives. Of course the 511 and Companion slice great do to their thinner design but for being such a thicker knife the Garberg performs like a thinner blade. Another thing that I really love is how the weight of the knife makes deliming small branches a breeze, using a lanyard to hold your pinky while choking back for small chops works perfect. The Garberg IMHO is a premium Bushcraft knife worthy of being compared to knives in a much higher price range like Fallkniven and others, yes for a Mora its expensive but as a quality knife its insanely priced. If given another brands name it could be easily sold at a much higher price, those folks who can't spend a $100-$150 on a knife this is perfect. I highly recommend the Garberg esp the leather sheath version, its a classic knife built like a tank but cuts like a razor.☺ I do hope they make a version for those carbon lovers like yourself. Thanks for taking the time to make all your awesome videos brother I enjoy every one of them.

Can you give a detailed description as to what the second head on the axe would be used for?
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 7 лет назад
One side has a 25 degree flat grind for finer, detailed work like shaving, feather sticks, carving pot hooks and tent pegs, etc. The other side is a 32 degree flat going for heavier tasks like your chopping and splitting. Great question and thank you for watching! -Dave
@michaelpoll4596
@michaelpoll4596 7 лет назад
Good video. I would only say (and I am NOT any sort of expert) but when I saw the shot of the axe with the two sheaths, I assumed that I would see you using one of them on the second edge while you were chopping with the other. That's what concerns me about double edged axes. Things happen and it would be nasty if that thing jumped back from hitting something wrong and hit you in the face. I know anything can happen in any situation, but an unsheathed sharp axe blade coming back towards my head is not something I am comfortable with.
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 7 лет назад
I feel as if all cutting tools have an inherent danger to them, which is why it is the responsibility of the user to be safe and vigilant while using any type of edged tools. This is a practice I have been utilizing for about 40 years. Thank you for watching, Michael! -Dave

Have you got an exact weight of that Council hatchet? I ask because a 2lb head on a 16" handle seems very odd to me, but often times manufactures seem to be off on listed weights. Most axe heads I have hung weigh a little more than the manufacture says. I'm guessing the total tool weight of that Council hatchet has got to be nearly 3lbs? I hope I'm wrong.
