@@subaru4920 as I posted elsewhere that's a way to increase the value of an already valuable comic and people who only see comics as investments would try to do that without a care in the world.
Dude, there is nothing reasonable with that. He is taking the piss. Those comic books that he is showing off from his own collection "that he would not sign" are worth close to 20 MILLION dollars. NO ONE in their right mind would would have Todd sign one, that would drop book's value by several MILLIONS ! That is like saying "Do not bring original Van Gogh paintign for me to ruin with my signature"
@@michaelholopainen2822 Also...why not signing a blank piece of paper? What, is he afraid someone is going to use that to forge his signature and commit some sort of fraud with it? lol C'mon, be real. Celebrities sign almost EVERYTHING all the time and no one complains about it. The guy is just a big diva and wanted to show off some of his priceless comics collection, that's all. 🙄
The year he launched Spawn, I took one of my guitars, stripped it down and repainted it with the 2-page spread of Spawn on a rooftop inside the 1st issue. 4 months later, he was in Dallas and giving autographs. Well, I got to the hotel where the convention was later in the afternoon thinking the line would be nothing...well, I was wrong. The line for him wrapped all the way around the downstairs lobby, up the stairs, and almost all the way around the second floor! I was there for about 15 min and the line hadn't really moved all that much when Todd made an announcement that he was going to take a quick break and would be right back. About 5 minutes later I hear a guy behind me ask "Is this the guitar I have heard about?" I turn around, and there is McFarland standing right there. I was all "Um...yes? How did you hear about it though? I just got here." Apparently that was how fast word spread through the line about my guitar. Well...he signed it and said it was a great job done on the guitar, and also signed my Spawn #1. Great day that was....got a compliment from McFareland, two autographs, and didn't pay a single dollar to get in! :) True story.
That’s completely fair. He walked by me once and regret not taking a photo with him. I was scared to ask, I hope I see him again. Spawn was my very first comic my dad got me, use to bring it to class all the time and got robbed for it. Still great memories
spawn was the first serious comic i was introduced too i mean yeah i read alot of the more detective style comics but spawn was the first super edge comic that brought me into taking a deep dive with my love for comics and characters because of Todd McFarlane i actually wanted to make graphic novels and i have moved on from the paper to trying my hand at some animations to bring my characters to life like i can't wait for the remake of the spawn movie i really hope thats true and not a rumor. if you see him please ask him if its true that he is attempting to make a spawn movie with the evolution of practical and cgi in its current state we could actually get a movie that brings the character back into the main stream short of his videogame appearances.
@@MickAshMetalMan its understandable but if he ends up at a con where he is its perfectly reasonable to ask a question i would assume that artists would like a few questions but yeah understandable.
I’d probably do the same thing, I wouldn’t want to annoy him and see a part of my childhood upset with me. I once did that to Dan Marino and I felt terrible in retrospect.
We passed by each other at a fan expo once and I just said "Yo, that's the guy who did the art for Serial Joe. Sick!" -and moved on. He's so in demand at those things, I didn't want a reaction, just to connect with a quip for an instant. Serial Joe having a number 1 single, now that's a memory.
I discussed this exact thing with Todd a few years ago right before he did a signing in my store, and this is exactly what he told me. Todd could not have been more gracious, it was an absolutely free signing that he actually volunteered to do! To this day I still cannot believe we hosted the legend. Thank you so much Todd, it was incredible to meet you.
@@joe_schmoe_420 Sabbath, Ozzy, and Dio all made amends before Dio died. Tony Iommi even said Dio was the greatest Metal vocalist of all time. Their whole fued was over Ozzy fans giving Dio a hard time when he joined Sabbath and Dio apparently making some harsh remarks toward Ozzy in interviews about his substance use. Ozzy was obviously so high at that time in the 80s he didn't even care until Sharon started her shit with Dio and Sabbath over everything. When Randy died the original members all made up and Dio went on to his solo career after fighting with Iommi and Butler over writing lyrics. He was a great guy but had a massive ego that got him kicked from Elf, Rainbow, and Sabbath. Where as Ozzy was a humble guy with drug and alcohol addictions and a whacked out money hungry wife.
Watch it again. It's rude as f**k. He went through all that blah-blah-blah, and flexed all those books JUST TO SAY the OBVIOUS: I won't sign anything I had nothing to do with. Which should have taken about 10 seconds and is also something people with brains should already know.
Todd... I 100% understand. I was lucky enough to meet you at an EB Games (now Gamestop) Managers meeting and you not only signed my Spawn comic ( I was first in line) you took the time to talk to me like a peer.. I will never forget that. Always a fan !!
Years ago on the Spawn forums, I won a contest and received a couple of figures. I asked if Todd could sign them...he signed both. I still have them to this day. As a kid, his iteration of Spiderman shaped my love of the character in many ways.
@@raptornerd4213I still remember some moron on Antiques Roadshow who had all these silver age #1s and he had sprayed them with some kind of lacquer chemical to preserve the pages. They looked all nice and shiny but he had a deer in the headlights face being told what he did just ruined their value.
The whole point of having someone sign a book is that they contributed something to it. The fact that people are asking Todd to sign books that he didn’t write nor draw makes no sense 💀
Well to be fair Todd started out as somebody that hated the way Stan Lee operated Marvel and hated that Stan never paid royalties to writers and artists but Todd went on to do the exact same scummy garbage that Stan did. Todd has literally gone to court over not paying people what they were owed.
We are all a somebody whether you are successful or not. Success is a man-made ideology that doesn’t mean anything outside of being a human. Just being born and able to experience this short existence is success at its peak. Awards, trophies, moneys, a classic collection means nothing to the grand scheme of things. Humans, we have this sickness where we think this stuff matters when we all die at the end and can’t take it with you. It’ll just be passed down to our kids who don’t really love us that much and are not going to appreciate it like we did because they did not earn it. Having said that, yeah, cool video. Cool comic book collection.
It's crazy that he has all that money yet he has restored books. I personally have no problem with restored books but I know a lot of people in the community who won't touch them with a 10ft pole. Honestly I think it's a market waiting to boom. And when I say restored I'm talking about something that has a slight color touch at most that was done by a pro.
That's just class, it's great he's not signing books that he wasn't involved with. Shows he not trying to get credit for other people's work. That's Icy!
Nice! I had him sign my Amazing Spider Man #300 way back in high school, one of my most prized comics! He was such a nice guy too, he signed like 4 other books for me at the time too.
It's so funny how Todd talks a mile a minute about stuff. If you go back and watch old interviews and videos of him younger he was the same way. Just a chatty Kathy. Always cracks me up. Gotta' love the guy. He is a fountain of enthusiasm.
With the blank issues, I get that if they only want a signature. Or if it's a character that he's never done artwork for. But if they want him to do a sketch AND sign it, that makes sense.
My prized position is a first edition Spawn #1 I got (paid $10 for the book itself) autographed in-person by Mr. McFarlane back at SDCC 2007 in gold sharpie. Amazingly it was not stolen from my storage unit when it was ransacked several years back. (Probably because I had it hidden. I'm sure if the thieves had found it it would have been stolen for sure.)
I had McFarlane sign a bunch of comics in the 90's. My best friend stole all of them when he moved me out when I was visiting Canada. One of those comics was Amazing Spiderman #300 in mint condition. He did a GI Joe comic before Spiderman
@@user-yb4eu9jx6v it’s because of the purple label that the CGC included when they were graded and slabbed. They do a very thorough inspection during grading and can tell if restoration work has been done or if the entire book is original. Any time you see that color label, restoration has been done on the book
@@fremontstreetpresents1415 literally nothing. some people just have this idea in their head that if you own something worth good money, you MUST sell it to make money at a certain point. everythings about value and how much it will sell for in 10 to 20 years, but some people just cant grasp the idea that not everyone collects things to make profit on them in the future.
Fair enough. BUT he did sign on the Spider-Man Skyline variant that has at least 98 other signatures on it. Look it up, the CGC graded book with 99 signatures. So did Todd or all the other 98 people worked on that book? Was it because the owner of that book was Connected? Where will these 'double standards' end?
Hey, at least he's committed to comics. I have no problem with it. More power to him. For anyone who thinks he's bragging and using this to do so. It isn't like he's rubbing it peoples' face.. He's simply informing people what he can't sign someone else's work. Which would be taking credit for it.. Which is worse than showing off. Apparently this must be a problem with fans and the the fans are making a stink about it, being entitled and NOT understanding that is isn't his work. Which is one o the most professional things I've seen from the comic artist/creator today. These younger ones are more than eager to take credit for other people's work....and they will ALWAYS get a pass. For those that will complain and think he's bragging. Don't be envious. It's demeaning to ones self. Shows a lack of confidence, entitlement and lack of self-respect. Envy is such a vile thing....leads those that are to commit horrible acts. Life isn't fair, Oh well.
The real question is...will he sign your DVD of Spawn the Movie.... >:) JK. Love everything Todd has done over the years and would be damn proud to have him sign my #1 issue of Spawn!!
I brought my Black & White Spawn # 1 variant & he signed it. It was 1 of the happiest days of my life. I will never sell it, I'll pass it to my daughter which also is a huge comic book fan.
If it's not worthy of me. I will not sign it. Sometimes you just want something with your hero's name on it. Something that is important to you, but he did not make it. If he is to good for you. Then be better than him.
Dude, Todd is taking the piss. He is just an excuse for him to show off his impressive collection of worlds most valuable comic books. That is like saying "Do not bring original Van Gogh paiting for me to sign." Those comics are close to 10 MILLION dollars EACH ! And would lose millions of their value being ruined with anyone's signature.
I totally get it, By putting your name or something you didn't do some people couldn't interpret it as a slight. " He had no part in the creation of that character why is he putting his name on it" It's kind of like how a tattoo artist doesn't like to do flash they only likes to do original artwork. To be honest there's nothing really wrong with that.
Good funny video he makes good point I learned this at comic con I thought I had book artist did to be signed he told me he didn’t do this cover amateur mistake on my behalf., It is disappointing that comic grading companies can give certificate or something for signed trade paper backs that are to big for grading cases thanks todd I call them trade paper backs at book stores they graphic novels no matter what I will still continue call them trade paper bracks
Serious question: how can an autographed book rate so high. Is there a special caveat in the system? You would think that it would have an asterisk. Do they have some level of liability in getting the signature confirmed?
What he will sign is perfectly fair and logical. I'm not even sure why you would want someone to sign a book they had nothing to do with. But I guess some people do.
Because it’s 2 things people like on one object: Todd and the their favorite comics. I can’t speak for everyone but I don’t ask for autographs so that the person can authenticate or “sign off” on their work. It’s just a reminder that I met them. But yeah he wasn’t being unreasonable.
I wonder to what extent it goes on stuff that isn’t comics? I have my copy of AC Unity and he made my favorite outfit in that game. It’s where I first learned about his work actually started reading Spawn right after.
Comic Book Fan: "Mr. McFarlane, would you sign this?" *The Dark Knight Returns III* Todd McFarlane: No, but I will sign something that I ACTUALLY did 🤣
Im the same way with games. Im okay with signing games like galactic or any Armageddon Boyz collector cartridge but its really dumb to get me to sign games like the original Super Mario Bros or original Metroid for NES since i was born when those games came out
Could have saved us time by saying he'll only sign things he worked on, but I'm pretty sure he wanted to take these 4 minutes to show off his collection.
I get the Spider-Man one because if someone only read and wasn’t thinking Tom didn’t create the art on the preceding Spider-Man comics it might make sense. The other comic is just a flex though.
