Agreed. However, I certainly wish those who conduct interviews come up with some interesting and unique questions. Todd will certainly provide a thorough and thoroughly interesting answer. An interesting question, even if not a great one, was a question I heard asked [by Kasim Sulton if I remember correctly] was" Have you ever eaten a crayon?". I mean this guy doesn't seem to actually know when Todd was inducted into the RRHoF, nor his reason for his ambivalence about it. I don't know who Adam Carolla is, but I'm not impressed.
It's sicking to see these ignorant children speak with a legend. I mean it's really making me sick. I don't know if I can finish watching this interview.
@@UltraVTV420 Todd is not on the radar of the general music-loving public. His catalog is so very unique and unusual. But the questions were so very generic! Oh, well. At least they had him on and Adam seemed to really appreciate him. I just read a piece about Todd in this week's New Yorker Magazine. Brief but sweet.
@@chericercone2362I agree any expose for Todd is well needed and much deserved. But also agree with op, he’s explained his career with grace for the last 40 some odd years.
I just turned 64 on this day. I saw Todd and Utopia at San Diego State in 1984 or 1985 when I was in the Navy. They opened for The Tubes and I'll remember this concert until the end. Thanks for all the great music you gave us through the years. "Leroy, boy, is that you?" Thanks Todd.
@@h.m.7218 Interesting, H.M. and Michael... I sort of just discovered this guy Fee Waybill on... um, RU-vid. That must've been a wild show! Watched some interviews w/ Waybill and he seemed to be carping about Todd and the Love Bomb album, implying that it sort of put the kibosh on their career. But he did say he and Todd are on good terms. The first 7 or 8 albums I bought in high school were all Rundgren albums and my first show was the Initiation tour. Cheers
Love Todd Rundgren. Been listening to him for the past 45 years and he has always had a sound uniquely his own. Todd weaves his melodies like a fine tapestry. My favorite Rungren songs: Caravan and Can We Still Be Friends? 😊
I’m not familiar with the show or episode, but I guess I lived it, because the RA tour in ‘77 was one of my first handful of concerts, and it didn’t disappoint.
Todd Rundgren is such a mature, down-to-earth, reasonable man. The things he says about sacrifice and fatherhood are so spot on. I have new-found respect for him after watching this.
MY favorite song by TR is "I Saw the Light". I saw the Paul Butterfield Band twice and JJ and Big Brother back in the late 60s early 70s. Man am I old! Great interview.
I bought a copy of Something/Anything right after it’s release in 1972, with money from my first real paycheck. It’s my favorite album by anyone not called The Beatles. Thanks for a rare interview. I have only seen Todd one other time like this, in the Live at Daryl’s Place episode.
Also missed any mention of his sister's diary covering shower time with her father. Human of the Year, Rundgren was so concerned there, he likely assisted the FBI in tracking down the diary and the laptop.
I've seen Todd twice. The first time when half the show was with a tape recorder, then with the band. The second time the Ra tour. Todd is my favorite album. Kind of lost track of him in later years. The NFL must owe him a lot of money.
Adam, this man is a genius, it’s embarrassing how much you refer to other artists right at the beginning of the interview. He doesn’t need to be associated with anyone, he stands on his own, no where less than Elvis Presley or David Bowie. He is an artist true and true who has learned his work from every angle.
Great interview with Todd. When I was in my 20s I saw him for the first time in Indy in a club, the guys I was with talked me into knocking on his trailer after show. I’m thinking I’m not a groupie. I just love music. And I loved Todd’s music. So I knocked lightly not having a clue as to how I was gonna explain why I’m there (other than telling myself don’t make an ass out of yourself.). Well I was walking away when Todd opened the door. He just invited me in. His back up singer was there (eventually his wife). He didn’t ask why are you here so that hurdle was overcome. And yes I did make an ass out of myself. I rambled on about his music, something about Midnight special. Hell I don’t remember. They were so nice and gracious. I didn’t want to take up to much of their time so after awhile I asked if I could have an autograph. All I had in my purse to write on was a teeny phone/address book. He said “I’ll put it right by Lionel Ritchie.” I laughed thinking he thinks I’m a groupie and like pop (though I did LOVE the Commodores). Anyway maybe a week later I realized it was because his last name was R and so was Ritchie. Hahaha. He actually put it in the Qs by mistake. Anyway got to meet him and he and his lady friend were no nice as idiotic as I must’ve sounded. Still got that address book somewhere…
Btw despite my feelings, I truly tried to have a “can’t we Still be Friends” relationship with my ex. Unfortunately no. He smeared me and did things to hurt our kids because he knew it would hurt me. Wow. I need to go see my counselor. Didn’t mean to make this all about me but here I am. Love that song and totally agree with lyrics. But sometimes it’s not possible. There. Made it about Todd
Love what Todd says about being a parent. It’s no great sacrifice to be there for your kids. Being a mother was the best thing I did. I unfortunately did get a divorce (he was cheating, I knew it, refused to say him explicitly being sexual to coworkers was okay), I couldn’t do it anymore. It was hard on my kids and honestly harder for me. The days they were with their dad were excruciating for me. When you’re a mom you never fathom you’ll miss a day in their life. Didn’t help he was immediately in a relationship with woman he “was definitely not” having an affair with and remarried shortly thereafter. I’m rambling on but what Todd said struck a nerve. Todd is a good guy. ❤
Love Todd for music, life, everything. I was a fan since i was just a boy and saw a few of his concerts and was afraid to meet him because if he was a jerk, I'd have to throw away all the records, cd's, i met him finally in thr 80's and he was very nice, almost bashful, then i met him and Michelle a few times, both just extremely gracious, normal, nice people. Todd's music has been a foundation for many phases of my life. I couldn't live this guy more.
Fine interview, and two things strike me… Gina tries to sound like Robin Quivers, which is a bit pathetic. Secondly, Todd, fuck you for insulting Baron Trump, who seems as though he wouldn’t hurt a flea. That said, Todd, you’re the greatest of musical geniuses spanning the past 100 years, at least, and I adore you. These last two things are not mutually exclusive. Compartmentalization is a wonderful thing, peeps.
Agreed. He just can’t help his political leanings coming out. And you’re going to pick on a teenager, Baron Trump, and not a word about Hunter Biden? You’re better than that, Todd! If you wanted to talk about any politician’s offspring that is fucked up it’s Hunter Biden. And shame on Adam for being asleep at the wheel. I think he didn’t want to engage Rundgren in any political banter.
It is hurtful. Todd is my favorite of all time - he's a wonder to me since about 1970. I was 7. 59 years old now. My young adult daughters (age 22) now share the love and respect for his music, and will carry it on. He gave us these gifts, and I gave it to my kids. I can separate the differing world views between myself and this artist, and I wish he could too. He must not understand that kind people with huge hearts and love for the world can see things differently. It's very conflicting to me daily, to be honest, as I will not stop listening to his music, and singing his praises regardless. He's the only one I'd care to see in concert again in these weird times. But I don't want my heart broken in person. The words in his song "Parallel Lines" sum it up, I guess. Beautiful song. But sad.
You’re the same age. Turned 59 in July. Class of ‘81. Todd came into my life around then. So many cool kids in my high school were (and still are) super fans.
I think I got ya. It's funny. When I first heard him talking there at the end I couldn't tell where he was going. Had to listen a second time. I felt the way you do about Joni Mitchell last year when she called for her music to be pulled from Spotify over Rogans comments (which turned out to be correct, depending on if you believe the Israeli study). This woman wrote :both sides now' which I believe are the best lyrics ever written and they perfectly describe my changing perspective from tribal conservative to fierce anti tribal moderate. Such a shame to see.
Agreed. Todd is a great guy but like most liberals never criticizes anyone with a D after their name. For example, when talking about the children of politicians he mentions Baron Trump, who for all intents is a well adjusted teen, also Marjorie Taylor Green’s kids. But not one mention of the behemoth of Presidential offspring, Hunter Biden. What sort of parenting produces such a corrupt and perverted individual? THAT is your prime example of a messed up offspring of someone in politics.
Dear Adam...Spend an evening on RU-vid and experience many, many Todd-related videos, live concert footage, songs, albums, archival stuff, interviews, documentaries, etc., etc. You might especially enjoy his 2017 10-day stint as an artist-in-residence at Notre Dame, where he worked with all sorts of young musicians, culminating in a concert of all-Rundgren tunes. Todd also watched the Irish win a football game and sang the fight song. Fantastic stuff!
He just can't help it. It's really sad. He's brighter than that. I lost a lot of respect for him calling out a teen, Barron Trump, but not even mentioning Hunter Biden. If you're going to mtalk about f*cked up political offspring, Hunter is the poster child. But he has a D after his name, so it's hand's off.
@@recordhead is probably irrational based on lies the media has cooked up.. Exaggeration.. but it's interesting how as time goes by these people are slowly being proven right on many of these issues We'll see
"Huge Todd fan" as in you still follow his career? Or "huge" fan of the hits from your era? Nothing wrong with the later but a HUGE fan, stays a fan. Todd is not a Trump fan. The song Tin Foil Hat from White Knight is about Trump. It's a great song. Here's a quote from Todd “If you’re a Trump supporter, don’t come to my show, because you won’t have a good time; you will likely be offended”
This man wrote the whole Swing To The Right album with Utopia, as well as Who’s Sorry Now, Bread, Compassion, and The Individualist album and you’re surprised he doesn’t like the Republican party and its uber rich mega mogul talking head? Surprised that you enjoy his music while disagreeing with his politics when half his songs represent ideals that are in direct opposition to the Trump administrations goals.
Exactly. He is being played/brainwashed like every other liberal. Thought he was brighter than that. Sadly, probably all jabbed up as well. To think that Democrats are ALWAYS the good guys and Republicans are always bad is naive at best. Open Your Eyes.
Don't know if he mentioned this but Todd's wife has a restaurant restaurant in Princeville, Kauai. Went there last year. Was hoping to see him, but we didn't :/ I did see Bethany Hamilton surfing in Hanalei bay. That was pretty awesome
I know this is so unimportant but I've stupidly LOOOOOONG wondered why Adam is the only one sitting down. I surmise it's because it's his show since BOTH Gina & Bald Bryan are standing.
Yes and just like every liberal they never call out their own. Rundgren mentions a teenager in Baron Trump but leaves out the most fucked up offspring of any current politician, Hunter Biden.
26:07 Todd says that you don't talk about politicians kids, then proceeds to bring up trump's minor kid, then wonders if he is at a school with "other pricks". Pure class.
And also chastises John Lennon in the same interview where he contridicts himself. Picks on a teen but it's hands off with mega creep and pedo Hunter Biden.
triple5 it’s different in each situation. Sometimes plays bass and gives input on composition. Sometimes gets coffee and gives counseling. Often times sets scheduling and logistics as well as cat herding.
There's many parts to being a producer. One is to make sure that stuff actually gets recorded, rather than the band just sitting around doing drugs. Another is to direct the cohesive sound of the album and to make sure it's well recorded. Todd's most famous production, Meatloaf's _Bat Out of Hell,_ Todd directed the band, played guitar, did most of the background vocals, and did all the arrangements. Jim Steinman wrote the songs, but could not actually write music, and according to Meatloaf, Steinman would *hum* what he wanted to Todd, who would turn it into actual band arrangements. With XTCs _Skylarking,_ Todd picked all the songs from a bunch of demos, arranged them into an order that made sense. Andy Partridge got all miffed because Todd picked songs that were actually written by another member of the band. (And he was annoyed that Todd was so much _better_ at sarcasm than he was.) With other albums, like the one for the _Tubes,_ Todd wrote songs for the band, and recorded guide vocals to give them an idea exactly what it should sound like. As Todd told more than one of the bands that he was working with, _"If you know what you want, I can get it for you. If you don't know what you want, I can do it for you."_
This is unbelievable how ill informed and ignorant these hosts are. WOW! Not sure if I can make it to the end of this interview. Where did they find these people? How are they in this position? Yikes!
I am a foremost lifelong Rundgren fan, and have a RU-vid channel where I do a lot of reproducing his piano tracks. He is my musical idol and he has a brilliant mind, obviously. Alas, I don't like his kneejerk lefty politics, and calling Baron Trump's dad a "prick" on a national interview is...well, hypocritical. I thought you cared about the fatherhood thing, Todd, huh? It's a good lesson in it being always better NOT to know of an artist's personal opinions. That said, it was a mostly insightful interview, and Todd proves himself very wise in most instances. Nevertheless, I'm sure it is very easy to be wealthy and live in Hawaii while the rest of America's average folks are getting ripped off for food and gas and rent and have to watch an idiot senile Biden wage stupid wars and allow millions of unvetted illegals into the country, all of which is costing taxpayers billions -- the same taxpayers who are paying $19 a pound for a cut of meat.
If Im not mistaken Joplin lived In an victorian house between Corte Madera & larkspur Not Mill valley which is north of those 2 towns .all In marin county ca...back in the day when marin was kinda cool!..Id rather have these interviewers ask T.R. about the great musicians hes work with Such AS Steve hillage from Gong Or his situation with Roger Powell?
you know at a time when finding information on people is easier than it's ever been there is no excuse when a host knows very little about his guest. Carolla and his "crack staff" really dropped the ball here, very lazy. He's lucky that Todd is very loquacious
There's a way to stop 360 windmill dunks in the final seconds of a game... That said. If you choose NOT to defend against such things, then you likely weren't impacted by such "poor gamesmanship".
Pretty bad interview all around. Very remedial questions. Definitely did not like the tone on John Lennon at all. I think the host is the "douchbag". Just very mean spirited. Easy to stand in judgement of someone's human frailties when they are not around isn't it?
