For those who don't know that was only a brief taste of a magnum opus in rock music, "The Ikon." That song ran over 30 minutes (one one side of vinyl even! Todd Rundgren has been a leading recording engineer). From this excerpt you can already tell some of the rhythmic complexities which pound through The Ikon. From tune to tempo this song is on the level of Emerson,Lake&Palmer masterpieces. I'd love to hear the back story as Kevin was told by Todd this day "Why don't we do the Ikon" (shivers!)
ok when you don't play for decades you get rusty like anything else, but Ellman was the shit in his prime. The Ikon is awesome I'm sure he's proud of that.
Neil Peart went out of his way to praise Ellman in a 1980 Modern Drummer interview, said he significantly influenced is playing specifically using concert toms.
Todd mentioned the Uncasville Indian Reservation where I saw the power trio on this tour. Very surreal experience. The Wolf Den concert space was in the middle of a casino with slot machine noises competing with the music through the whole show. Plus, a lot of elderly high rollers, who obviously knew nothing about Todd, took all the prime tables. As they fled, plugging their ears, we hoi polloi moved into their seats. Great show though. Ended up pounding my fists on the stage to Worldwide Epiphany and One World.
Steve Paul's Scene jim chapin advanced techniques for the modern drummer Berkeley College of Music Utopia that is an encapsulated lineage. Kevin was a drummer's drummer. Ask Kramer, anyone can sell a stock. Not everyone can keep 11/23 going. Most of the drummers who could were jazz.
