It's the same discussion we've had on other issues, my body, my decision. I've always taken responsibility for myself. I'm happy to do this to myself by myself. I want the option should I choose it.

you should be able to make the informed decision no matter what, if you're of sound mind

This is long overdue. Having sadly helped my pet pass on Friday to end her suffering and comparing that to the barbaric, cruel and humiliating last 6 months of my Mum's life it's a no brainer to me. My Mum's last 6 months were everything she begged us not to allow to happen. It's a personal choice and NOBODY has the right to try and stop this from being passed. We all have our own spiritual beliefs, if you don't like it, just ignore it but nobody should try to force their beliefs on others.

Considerable care for those with loved ones as in dementia or motor neurone disease. I still wish for extensive discussion and amendment.

Surprise, surprise... The racial distribution matches the demographic distribution. Why do you guys always focus on race? It's the least interesting dimension. How about a graph showing the distribution of the ailments? I would love to know what proportion had MND, Colon Cancer, Dementia or Brain Tumors.

It’s interesting that it’s mostly prosperous NZ Europeans who have lived very comfortable lives that are the biggest proponents of Euthanasia. Family structure within this demographic are more individualistic as opposed to Chinese, Maori, Pasifika cultures which place an emphasis on living together inter generationally and supporting those who may be financially or physically weaker.

Quiet religious some of the groups too and the family peer pressure thing would be tricky as well. Anyway this bill is your choice and your choice alone and if that is perceived as selfish then as they say "tough titties".

In my experience with European friends and acquaintances they are scared of others suffering and don’t know how to handle it. And don’t want to look after family that are dying.

@@willturbot1044 We live in interconnected communities where the autonomous decision of one individual affects the decisions of another. At a time when assisted suicide is fully funded and palliative care is not, one must ask if poorer terminally ill people really do have a choice. Further liberalizing this law in a high-inflationary, high-cost-of-living environment is reckless and does nothing to promote human flourishing.

@@thestarwarsarchives7407I think you're completely either ignoring or possibly aware of the massive spiritual issues in regard to a person's individual ascension and their right to complete their life on earth on their terms. There's no empathy or compassion in your comment.

I have Schizophrenia, Asperger's and Bipolar Disorder Type II and have attempted suicide twice. I probably wouldn't be deemed "fit" to make the decision to die with dignity based on my medical history but I'd say this.. I am not suicidal nor have I been for serval years but only because I'm determined not to die in pain, slowly and without dignity. I'm living my best life now but I'm also waiting for these laws to liberalise so that when I am finished having a blast I can go out in comfort. Unique perspective, I know. Most people won't get it but then again, most people don't have a cocktail of mental health conditions that massively impact quality of life. Let people have the right to choose, it's not going to impact anyone else and it certainly won't be a burden on the state. I'd rather not jump off a bridge or overdose on panadol but I guess the state/ society prefers that option.

This has the potential to go very wrong if the criteria expands. Thankfully, it appears to be one particular demographic, lets hope it doesn't spill over to our ethnic peoples and may we continue to look after and care for our elders.

Reform cannot come fast enough for me! I have MND and dread the day I cannot swallow food and must be tube fed. If I cannot access assisted dying, then I must do it on my own, which would be very messy and upsetting to my family. As things stand, we treat humans worse than I we do our pets.
@williammewett5050

Andrew - I'm sorry for your MND diagnosis. It's a terrifying and torturous affliction. The fear that you will be trapped in a rapidly failing and unresponsive body, unable to 'take matters into your own hands' is beyond the comprehension of the religious crowd. I feel that those who oppose this truly liberating legislation have never really thought it through. It's a choice to leave this world in a dignified and respectful manner, surrounded by those who matter most to you. A choice. Your choice. I wish you strength in your journey.

Shame it wont go further. I for one have had a "living will" then Advance Directives since I was in my 30's I do NOT want palliative care. Once I can't look after myself I want to 'cross the bridge' in a peaceful manner, my mental state at the time should not come into it as long as Advance Directives are re-assessed every few years while of sound mind. [we do the 'decent thing' for animals why not for humans who want it?]

Interesting that this is so important to the ACT party given there is a suicide epidemic. If only they were as passionate about life!

There's a massive difference. People who want assisted dying are facing end of life with great pain and suffering from their body breaking down with no hope of recovery. They want to leave on their terms with dignity. I wish you all the best on your journey of spiritual growth 🙏

We should have the right to be able to go when we feel the need to! I'm currently visiting a rest home The PG unit (Dementia) and I'm pretty sure if all those people 20 years ago were shown where they would be in 20 years' time they would say give me the needle. Put me to sleep! Only people making money here is the owners of these rest homes! It makes me extremely angry and disappointed that we don't have this choice! I'm saddened for the people I see and feel how inhumane this is. Don't get me wrong the caregivers do a wonderful job but I don't want someone bathing me, putting a nappy on me, feeding me, clothing me this is no quality of life. All good for those that want to live like this BUT not me! Let us have the choice.

Its all about the money, people are living longer so hospitals and rest homes are needed, this in my opinion is the cheapest way to balance the books, never mind how the elderly built this country the younger generation have never fought in wars and are not really caring about the old and sick they are going to need to spend more to look after them and there is a cost.
