Urban farmer Chris Thoreau is a leading light in the niche, micro-green movement in Vancouver, BC. He co-ordinates a programme called the BC Seed Trials, where each year citizen gardeners grow the same seeds together and compare results using online tools and social media.
This was a pitch video to the CBC (alas, unsuccessful) at the beginning of the BC Seed Trials programme, where Chris appears in his Vancouver apartment with his solitary tomato seedling like a boy whose school project has gone awry. The jagged leafed Stupice plant looks perky and healthy for its few inches of stature. However, it is surrounded by barren pots of dirt.
Only two of Thoreau’s batch of seeds have germinated while other growers with the same seeds are posting photographs on social media showing 80%, 90% even 100% germinating success with strong, vigorous plants.
