This is a review of the Tokina 24-70 f/2.8 lens. Having never used a Tokina lens before, I was pleasantly surprised with how well this lens performed. The auto focus and image quality rivaled all the other 24-70 lenses I have tried. Have said that, there are some drawbacks to this lens, most notably the weight.

Thank you for this video Vincent! It is hard to make a decision on a lens investment, especially in this zoom range, and this lens has not been reviewed much on RU-vid.

Thank you for this honest review. I have been debating for a long time whether to get this or the Tamron ones. Now I know which one is the right for me. So I'm getting the Tamron since I do video as well and that VR seal the deal for me.

I own the Tokina 17-35 f4 lens for full frame. It is a very sharp lens and the build quality is fantastic. Definitely not disappointed in my purchase of it. I will agree that I do get some flaring when shooting into bright light. But if this 24-70 performs anything like my 17-35 then I'm sold, even if it doesn't have stabilization. I think Tokina has really stepped up their build quality and optics. They also have a 70-200mm f4 lens that does have stabilization, so something to also check into.

When he says "it is heavy" hes not joking lol. This lens is sharper then my nikon 50mm and my 85mm 1.8. The difference isnt huge but if you pixel peep you'll see it. Beautiful lens and I too recommend it

Great review, Vincent! I have a Tokina 11-16mm f/2,8 II, and it is a great lens(crop sensor), solid and pin sharp. If their 24-70 had image stabilization, I would have choosed that one instead of my Canon 24-70 Lens when I upgraded to Canon full frame camera.

I have shot with lens on 3 different Canon cameras....the R, RP, and R8.....very sharp and consistent photos. Warning: it is heavy duty.

I use and love a Tokina 28-70mm f/2.8 ATX Pro lens which was made on the Angenieux patent that Tokina purchased. It is a very good lens and is my go-to mid-range zoom for both APSC and Full-Frame Canon cameras. It has better IQ than my 24-70mm f/2.8L Mark-I lens and s also a tad lighter than that lens also... BTW: I shoot mostly people and the 28mm is no drawback since I don't like using anything wider than 28mm when shooting people...

If Nikon and Canon are first party companies and Tokina is a third party maker, what is a second party maker?

Great video Vincent! This appears to be about the same size of the Canon 24-70 mkII lens. Tokina, lens are becoming some excellent glass. You couldn't always say that about some of their lens in the past. At $1000 it's not cheap cheap lens either. Good stuff

I just purchased this lens. Love the built , feel and looks of it on my 5D4 but unfortunately it is way too soft for my taste from f2.8 to f4. That alone made me want to return it. I wish it would have worked out since I got it at a awesome price.

Hi I'm planning to buy one of the lens between Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD and Tokina Fx 24-70mm f2.8 for my Nikon D610. Nikon Fx 24-70mm f2.8 VR is bit too expensive for me. I want a better image quality but VC/VR is equally important for me. I'm a casual photographer and use my camera mainly for travel photography. Currently most of my shots are landscape and some are portraits. I read the DXOMark review on these lens - tokina was rated better for it's sharpness/image quality but lacks vibration control. VC will be useful in the low light/slow shutter condition and videography. I'm not sure how good VC in this Tamron lens. Both lens has consistent wide aperture to take Bokeh and can help me to carry less lens for travel photography. Initially I wanted to buy tokina because reviews says that it has better image sharpness. But it lacks VC so I'm confused. Photography is my hobby but I've a plan to take it to another level. I need suggestions on how much impact these lenses can make on my in camera photo outcome.

if you're on a budget like me, i can forgo image stabilization. it's just more things to break. so long it's sharp, that's what I want.

For canon mount copies is the focus ring and zoom ring going the same direction as canon lenses?

Great video. I however did have a question, I am using a Nikon D5200 myself. Would it be a good purchase for me (replacing the default 18-55mm lens which is utter crap) or do you recommend something different? Since I am pretty new to using lenses and this D5200, I can use the extra help in figuring this one out. (Old camera was a Panasonic Lumix FZ48)

+Vincent Martinez Photography Would definitely be a huge upgrade. Although the latest photo's taken on 24mm, 35mm and 50mm with that standard 18-55mm crap lens were actually decent for that lens quality, I definately need something better. Did upload a lot already to sig442.deviantart.com/ incase you like to see what I got out of my camera's so far, no training at all, just me learning as I go. Thanks for the information! Really appreciate it! (I do own a Tamron 70-300mm LD Di 1:4-5.6, but not entirely happy with that either)

+Vincent Martinez Photography Am in the same boat right now,more especially now that Tamron rebate ends tomorrow. I ve been searching the entire Internet for reviews.I need a comparison but can't find it anywhere.I really need help for this decision,and I hope not to make a wrong one.
@josephl.cinematographerpho4976
Thanks for the video, question, I would like to use this lens for video, I found the copy I have, the Zoom ring is very stiff, I dont know if thats normal or I have a bad copy...would that smooth out with some use?...or should I change this for the Tamron version for my video purposes? thank you for your support on this

Hey Vincent! If you dont mind me asking, how are you happy with Tokina after some time using it? thnx
@VincentMartinezPhotography
@VincentMartinezPhotography 8 лет назад
+Luka Žanić it was actually a rental, so I only had it about 3 weeks if I remember correctly. I had intended to purchase a copy but ended up buying some strobes instead. But overall I was happy with the lens and i have heard other photographers praise the durability of Tokina products lately. Sorry wish I was more help.

Thanx! I am worried about some reviews on a very loud AF.
@VincentMartinezPhotography
@VincentMartinezPhotography 8 лет назад
+Luka Žanić To be honest, I can't remember how loud the AF was on the lens. At the time i did the review I really wasn't shooting video so I didn't pay any attention to the noise. Now that I am doing more video it's one of the first things I notice. But if others are saying it's loud, then you may want to go for something else. I really wish I had paid attention to the noise levels myself.

Don't think that hiking up in the mountains (2:31) is something that most watching this are going to be concerned about (even the folks in the Bakers area) Vince ;-) Good feedback on this lens. Now you just need to work on those devastating slams on Google...YIKES! Evidently the moms aren't aware that they could/can purchase their precious pix on your SmugMug portfolio.

I like canon l zoom, canon non l primes, tamron and tokina. tokina and canon l hold their value better due to build quality and tamron has inconsistent quality on their lenses.

Who needs vibration control with a kilogram of metal in your hand? It’s far easier to accelerate a smaller mass! It’s the law of physics.
