Aloha, John! 🌺 My family & I have been watching your channel for years in Hawaii and I can’t believe I got to meet you in Ameya Yokocho. You’re so kind to say hi to me during your livestream. Great to see you!
These videos are quite educational especially for the people whose haven’t been in Tokyo before like myself 😎Tips and advices are always welcomed therefore🙂Thank you for sharing 🙂👍!!!
If it's a sweet, it doesn't go off. In New Zealand, we have Best-Before and Use-By. If it's Best-Before, a.k .a. things like Cup Ramen and processed sweets like Kit Kats, you can have way after without a problem. Use-by, a.k.a things sold fresh, must be used before the date.
Even "use by" you can still use a couple days after all depends on the the product and what it looks like smell like. It's just a guide the dates but you also use your senses
Been to Ameyokocho more times than I can remember. The takoyaki place is the best value takoyaki in Japan at only ¥50 per ball and there is help yourself mayonnaise, sauce, katsuobushi and aonori to dress them exactly as you want. They make them to order so they are always piping hot and you have to be careful to let them cool a bit or you will burn your mouth. You don’t need any Japanese to order them - just hold up your finger to make 4, 6 or 8. The famous sweet shop is called “Ni ki no okashi” which means Two trees cakes. It has a big range of savoury cooking products as well as confectionary.
Thank you for this update. Finally heading to Japan in 3 weeks times after years of COVID delays. We are staying in Okachimachi, so we will certainly visit this market. Grateful for the updates of what is there.
I love "shopping in a foreign market" videos like this! I wonder if you used to watch SerpentZA or Laowhy86, popular China RU-vidrs. Their videos always used to be fun videos of exploring interesting markets and stuff. I'm talking quite a few years ago now though.
I bought yesterday in Ameyoko in the morning a cute shopping bag with a cat printed in it for 1100 yen as a souvenir gift for my mother... I never thought that hours later John would be at Ameyoko... If I had visited Ameyoko in the afternoon, I would have seen him...
Your market videos are always so cool to watch. Fun note, Those strawberries that were shown @7:01 are at my local marukai japanese market in san diego!!
I first saw that corndog type of cheesy street food in Asakusa, but it started to gain traction in other places, even abroad :) . I found one in London, at the Greenwich Market as well :) .Good stuff!
I do the same thing in the bay area’s Japanese market, always check the “origin “ of the country of the products, don’t assume is from Japan. Too risky to purchase anything consumables or skincare from Japan’s “big neighbor”
About jewellery can you do a video about the pearls, Japanese pearls are famous and expensive. Could you give us the best addresses of factories where they are sold, where not to pay a fortune and have the best quality? Or a few shops?
i love ameyoko. im probably there almost every other weekend. Takeya is great. I got my eye glasses there. My favorite shop Garakuta Boeki is sadly closed now. Ill miss that place.
But it does matter, I’m not going to Japan to buy produced in China goods. If I wanted that, I would just go to China. I know Japan can’t produce everything itself, most places can’t, but I think it’s important to be mindful of where things are coming from and where our money is going.
Thanks for the walk around John. Funny (though I guess not unexpected) to see all the other inspired by John content creators out there. I'll stick with the OG. When are you going to get someone on expanding your merch?
When I went to Tokyo, I stay in Ueno area, love ameyoko. My luggage was broke on the last day, I bought luggage in ameyoko it was very good quality and the price was very good. Love Ueno.
Good advice on planning the plan of attack before going to places like this. Otherwise, plan on getting a larger suitcase when you go home. 😂 Shopping on steroids.
Lots of cheap price but also poor quality made in China , even in grocery stores some dry sea food like shrimp, fish , squid are all from China , fruits as well from China and Thailand . So if you want to buy things Made in Japan to give your friend as gift you need to ask . I stay at Ueno so I often come here for food , lots of streets next to this market are full of restaurants.
You get what you pay for. Taste is probably the same … the origin, not sure how important it is, pumpkin seeds are 98% from China worldwide for example. So much in Japanese supermarkets is as well when I check labels.
|In Canada we have the issue of 'packaged in Canada with imported ingredients' and then they don't tell you where they are from. Even "made in Canada" only means over 50% of the cost was here (ie the packaging labour...the actual item, who knows where its from). Countries should do a better job enforcing clear labeling. I'm sure most of us want to buy local for most things.@@onlyinjapanGO
198 yen only..that is only 1.32 us dollar....here in the states that would be 8 or 9 dollars for that bag of kit kat....i always wait for sales in here in the USA
21:59 That's Nakata Shoten. The normie branch. The actual real store is in one of the off streets. Mr Nakata is a historian who happens to own this militaria store. In the actual, secret, store you can get original and accurate reproduction uniforms and gear of the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy from the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras. History enthousiasts need to shop at Nakata Shoten.
takoyaki in ameyoko are good.although they may not be the best, there's no better deal for me than having to sauce them up & condiments all u want.really enjoyed that day i ate as much takoyaki as i can.hahaha
Ameyoko Ueno has gotten so cheap and tacky recently. My wife and I were there a few weeks ago and were shocked to see Chinese food stalls selling cooked pig feet, intestines, etc., all spread out and uncovered. But we still go there mainly for our favorite black sauce ramen 上野 麺屋武蔵 武骨相傳.

Thank you for video . I want to ask Still is there any market to buy wwII equipments? I like WWII soldier lighter , hand knife etc.. I find and bougt wehrmacht hand knife at Ukraine .I am very interested in these things. Also I find WW2 museum At Tokyo I hope ı will visit it too.
We had our hotel near Ueno Station and close to the shopping area. Loved the vibe there, also at night. We also found the shrine up the stares in the centre of Ueno. Just lovely to take a rest there. They also have a beautiful goshuin. Great video John.
about the Nike shoes John bought there many years ago.............. I'm surprised to learn that there are also some fake merchandise sold in Japan....I thought the Japanese govt are strict when it comes to fake merch and all the items sold there are authentic
I would only purchase Nike in Japan via a reputable Nike store or sneaker freaker space like Atmos. Only cheap store that does bargains for real Nike is Don Quijote. Those Ueno market stores look OK but they didn't give real or quality vibes. ABC Mart looked authentic but just cheap. There is a sports store to the right of the huge vending machine that is themed Marvel or was. Opposite Ueno station. They sell OK Nike stuff grabbed a bargain Nike backpack.
Probably ONLY HERE, but they come from neighboring countries and do exist although harder to find than the real thing but you get what you pay for in Japan. If it’s too cheap, there’s a reason.
LOL Did she even say what her channel was 😅 I rewound it several times and all I hear is follow me on and she rattles off social media platforms but not her actual name or am I just missing it 😂
The one world order is upon us. You will eat the cricket flour and you will like it…or else (JK). The NHK put out a video on the bug foods recently. “They” are trying to normalize it.
It’s rude to ask for discounts in Japan. Japan does not have a discount/bargain culture of Thailand, Vietnam.. It is especially rude to ask a question where the answer is to be “no”. So please please do not ask for discounts. Do not destroy culture. Local culture is one of the reasons we travel. 😩😩😩😩
