I stayed here for the entire of March. I spent a decent amount of time exploring the area, walking along the river, going to Yodobashi etc. Really like this area of Tokyo but the morning rush to the city center is quite rough.
This is where I stayed when I went to Tokyo and I loved it! It was a quiet but not boring part of town. I stayed at the APA Hotel and I loved walking around Ryogoku at night. Foolishly, I saved my visit to the Sword Museum for my last day there without realizing it was closed that day so I only got to see the first floor exhibits which are apparently still open when the museum itself is closed.
I love Ryogoku! I stayed at Pearl Hotel in Ryogoku last year. It was reasonably priced and clean. Highly recommended. My husband and I had ramen and gyoza at the restaurant under the train line near Ryogoku Station. And we went to the Sumida Hokusai Museum. Highly highly recommended! Hokusai was the ukiyoe artist who painted "Great Wave." John, you can create one-hour RU-vid video just with the museum.
My family and I stayed in Ryogoku twice in our Japan trip in 2018. I agree, seems like a very liveable. I chose it because the accomodation was very affordable for a family of four. Accomodation was nice, clean and definitely close to everything we wanted to see. I liked that it seems to be a quiet section of Tokyo as well. Great video John! I was hoping you would cover this area one day.
These videos offers a lot of information and tips which i appreciate 😎👍Although if not looking for budget accomondation etc it’s not that important however these advices and tips are still welcomed🙂Therefore thank you for sharing🙂👍!!!
Wow John, I absolutely loved this livestream. Ryogoku indeed looks like a gorgeous little ✨Gem💫 as it has such a unique vibe to it. Can’t wait for your ‘Special Anniversary’ reunion with Kyosumi Shirakawa in June! Having a lovely cup of relaxing Coffee (@Tiny Paradise & Arise), and a quite peaceful stroll on Fukagawashiryokan-Dori. ☺️ Ps. I also remember how much you enjoyed that snack at that little bakery! 👀 My eyes are wide open, my body is having palpitations, and I’m all ready and set! 👍
We were there at Ryogoku 3 weeks ago and we stayed at Apa Hotel . I totally agree that the Ryogoku area is very relaxing and serene both daytime and night time. It is nice to see you cover this great gem of an area. I am now a subscriber.
Last November I stayed in that area both time I was in Tokyo. Pretty nice, quiet and nearby to every interesting places you want to see. In fact for the next trip I'm still looking in that area, also a bit Northern near the Skytree. Nice live as usual, thanks!
Don't miss the close by: Fukagawa Edo Museum (yes Edo-Tokyo museum is closed for reno) take a LUUP e-bike or bus from the station. It's an outstanding recreated Edo townscape not to be missed. Research it, I'm sure you'll enjoy it 😊👍
I stayed at that tall APA on my first trip to Japan last year and it was by far the best out of the 4 hotels I stayed at. Staying there again in July and I've paid extra for a top floor room for that Lost In Translation style view on the cheap less than £60 a night (that's probably at least 3-4x cheaper than equivalents in London!)
Hi John. I have always been impressed with the cleanliness of the streets and alleyways of Japanese cities. Several years ago, BBC designated Japan as the cleanest country in the world. This reputation is very well warranted. Since I have Japanese and Irish heritage, visiting both countries from Western Canada on separate occasions was a most rewarding experience. We ate in sushi and udon restaurants in every city we visited. It was a gastronomic dining adventure. Your videos are superbly entertaining and informative. Thank you for featuring:Leo and Kanae in your videos. You have a beautiful family. From Canada 🇨🇦 with 💌📥.
I stayed in that APA hotel last September - October!! Was awesome, highly recommend. Food all around the train station was perfect!! Akihabara was 2 train stops away!! Can't wait to go back!!
Hi John! What a calm beautiful area! I was looking at the blue skies, so beautiful! For a major holiday, it’s not crowded there in Ryogoku. Seems close by to areas like Asakusa, convenient to other areas via local train system from the map you presented. “Step back!” I’m sure there will be lots of those scenarios. 😂 ✌🏼
Thank you for this video. I did not know I was near to ryokoku sumo arena because I just stroll along sumida river until the gate hotel whenever I stay near Eitai bridge every month.
2 spots not to miss in the area: Fukagawa Edo Museum (Edo-Tokyo museum is closed for reno) take a LUUP e-bike or bus from the station ... & ... Ryōgoku Edo NOREN with best value dinning upstairs and photo op 📸 While I've loved visiting the area a few times over my 7 trips to Tokyo I wouldn't say it's a convenient area to stay/launch from to explore Tokyo. For me, staying in the areas in the far north of Yamamote line are quieter, cheaper, with less tourists and a more local vibe without having to transfer trains onto the city loop line. On my March Tokyo stay there my hotel room was US$37 single a night with microwave, cooktop, fridge, shower/toilet with railway and subway stations 300m away. Hard to beat 😊 Japan trip #10 next week 🤗
In all my trips, I spent some nights in Ryogoku, and I enjoy it! It’s two stations from Akihabara, that’s nothing. I don’t usually like APA hotels, but the one near the sumo hall is a cut above. I also like a bar there, Pop Eye Beer Club. Their happy hour has free food with drinks, and their yakisoba style spaghetti is fantastic.
Ryogoku area might be my favourite area to stay in Tokyo during a trip, at least of the areas I've stayed at. It's within a walking distance of multiple different city centers/areas and Chuo-Sobu + Oedo lines can get you to most other main areas conveniently. Yet, it's also quiet and relatively inexpensive to stay at. Now there isn't a whole lot to do at Ryogoku specifically but that's almost beside the point of staying there.
I just stayed at the Lyuro Tokyo Kiyosumi hotel, which was along the Sumida river. My huge hot tub faced the river with a large window. It was awesome at night with the city lights.
Thank you for sharing about the Ryogoku View. I’m surprised at how many good hotels this area has, much more open than the other side. You’ll be warmly welcomed back I’m sure!
We stay near this area all the time except closer to Morishita Station. Oedo and Shinjuku lines out of Morishita make it easy to get around to just about anywhere. We like the quiet neighborhood and more of like living in Japan instead of a tourist area. Many local good eats and the typical chain restaurants. Shibuya and Shinjuku are nice to visit, but not so nice to stay if you want something quiet.
My favorite type of John Daub video: a walk around an off-the-beaten path neighborhood! I loved it. ....Also, how dare that guy ask you to be on his puny TV show. Doesn't he KNOW who you ARE?!? ☺
Ah, that brings me back a year. That what exactly where I was staying last year in August. It is super conveniently located, although due to proximity to Akihabara one might up there more often than one would like. 😬 Stayed in the APA Hotel which is nice and affordable, even has an Onsen in the basement (and a Kombini), also a pool but that costs extra (which I didn't understand so we didn't use it).
I was at this exact place last November, it's a nice area, calm yet very close to the big city, and also very nice for sumo fans like myself (Terunofuji
I used to find hotels near Ryogoku due to how affordable it was, but it's now super expensive (accommodation wise), until I discover Kamata & Kawasaki area.
It's funny, I was looking at Ryogoku for my first trip to Tokyo (third to Japan) but went with Akabane instead since it was cheaper and I wanted to be somewhere a teeny bit less busy
John. From my last Tokyo trip, I stayed in Kawaguchi, Saitama area. The area is very peaceful, and I really enjoyed jogging along Arakawa river sidewalk. You shall try to explore that area.
Booked a Daichi hotel in this area, but canceled it at the last minute. I thought crossing the river was too far from the Tokyo city center, but I guess I was wrong! Thank you for sharing!🤭Next time, give it a try! Looked cool and new.😉
As a Japanese native of Hakata, I confidently recommend the Hakata ramen that he introduces. There are actually not many restaurants in Tokyo where you can eat authentic Hakata ramen.
So excited I bought my Sumo tournament ticket already. The tickets that were being sold were the Wrestle Magic tickets (Im assuming the gacha was for that too) But my plans to get more day of tickets for the may tournament are thwarted...schucks!
i stayed here during my two visits to Japan really like this area so peaceful and quiet and planning for my 3rd visit also im thinking of staying in the same area the hotels here are much cheaper than the tourist areas
Having stayed in Asakusabashi being more connected. I could take the Asakusa subway or JR. I could walk to Akihabara. Close to many restaurants and close to Burger King.
Looks like a neat place to live if you want to do not right downtown urban! John..What’s the English name for the sumo sized clothing store you pointed out? That place looks awesome! Thank you! Really enjoyed this video! It was neat! 😊
I passed through this area a year ago and agree with John completely, it's a great place. Well, one thing I disagree with is that IMO the sword museum wasn't worth the money, the traditional garden next to it though, is absolutely beautiful and unlike most gardens is free to enter.
YOOO i just walked over there today and went on a river boat ride up the river and over to the Gundam robot and arcade over there... crazy!!! thanks for this info my hotel is ending soon and i may just move there for something more budget friendly
Last year, end of September, I also had my Arnold Schwarzenegger moment with you in Ginza at front of Police Museum. I saw you and was afraid to ask for a photo, only managing to say 'Hi.' You're also famous! 👍 Next time
could you please talk more about Akiya homes? Can Americans buy these homes? Are there any restrictions? Thank you so much! I have watched some of your livestreams and just started to learn about Akiya homes.
I've recently stayed in a nearby neighborhood and was lucky to see Sumo wrestlers in yukata, riding their bycicles! Such a charming area and I think Sumida-ku in general is a great place to stay. It is not as trendy and fashionable as Shinjuku or Shibuya, it felt more like a working class city, but I definitely enjoyed its laid-back vibe. The children were also very friendly and would say hi to me in the park.
Thanks for the video. I've been experiencing some annoying interruptions lately in the form of a small half-second pause that occurs very often in your videos lately. Please fix them! 🙏
@@onlyinjapanGO Actually it is a little older than that. The current Ryogoku west exit building was opened in December 1929 to meet the increasing demand in traffic, and the Ueno station building was open in April 1932.
In the era of reconstruction after the 1923 Kanto earthquake, Tokyo used a lot of steel structures not just in new bridges, but also railway station facilities. Ryogoku station east exit building is a good example where you could see steel columns inside. Another good example is Akihabara platforms 5 and 6, the Sobu Line platforms.
Do you celebrate and go out with little Leo during the childrens day holiday? Good hotels around the sumo arena. I was hoping to watch a sumo match in the future for my solo travel in Japan.
Hey Rainer! Tomorrow; Leo & I will go out :) mama has work. Today he was with Jiji (Grandpa). It’s kind of a good time to stay local, this year anyway. Such picture perfect weather too!
You cannot tap forward, because then you miss the walking experience 🙂 In fact, while on a walkabout with you, John, I tend to rewind many times, if I get distracted and miss a section. I love these episodes, walking along on a beautiful day. ❤️
just came back from tokyo last week, speaking about the kamaguchiko lawson, the working staff seems to be fed up with the many tourists visiting their convenience store, impolite attitude from the staff was encountered, very disappointed with this.
I actually prefer Toyosu, it’s so much more open, the brick walkway along the river is super wide, amazing views of the city from Gururi Park, BBQ zone at the end past the new fish market. Never mind the tourist stuff, it’s the best place to live in Tokyo I think.
a lot of the tunnel art you see in tokyo is done by professionals and is paid for by the city as part of the beautify the unattractive parts of the city program. Some of the artists are quite famous.
The APA hotel was okay but I would never stay again because you can’t control the air conditioner, it was so hot when we stayed. John, why were you so rude to the Fuji TV guy. It was so off putting I couldn’t even finish watching the episode.
9:30 i like your videos but why did you get so arrogant like fuji tv is beneath you? Acting as if an ant had just approached you and you had to squash it for no reason? Just say no thank you and keep it moving, no need to tell him you do a lot of work for Japanese tv and make all those disgusting faces. Be better.
