Steady-ish shots:
For those wondering, the stabilizer used is the Zhiyun Crane. It allowed me to capture scenes I normally wouldn't as I was walking from one place to another. It's not completely smooth though, as a lot of footage has some bounce if you pay attention. If I would have walked with a more ninja-like step, I probably could have cut it down somewhat.
People not staring:
The nice thing about the handheld stabilizer, is that it wasn't as obvious when I was filming, due to way I was holding it. People did look at the camera here and there, but not as much as if I would have used a tripod, or if I stuck my face behind the camera at all times. Depending on where I was, I would just hold the camera at stomach level and not look at the camera, so you wouldn't know I was filming. It probably looked like I was carrying my camera going from one place to the next as opposed to looking like I was actively filming.
Face masks:
Totally anecdotal, but I hear half the reason is to wear while sick to prevent spread of germs, half is to not get sick, and if a lady is wearing, it may be because she didn't feel like putting on makeup. Air quality is fine, no problem there.
Camera setup:
Sony a7sii with Sony 16-35mm f4, 24-240mm f3.5-5.6, and 55mm f1.8 lenses. Most is shot using the 16-35mm lens.

What sucks and is more maddening is that the current trains in NYC are manufactured by Kawasaki Rail (R-160/R-160B), but they operate on very outdated US-based signal systems. And with all the fare hikes, there's absolutely NOTHING to show for it. MTA should bring in consultants from Japan and do a major upgrade.

The overall etiquette of the riders is stunning. I’ve been here for a week using the Yamanote line every day. Not once has anyone raised their voice, behaved rudely or generally created a disturbance. The stations are immaculately clean and organized too. The U.S. could learn a great deal from the Japanese.

When you go to Japan be sure to get a Japan rail pass ! It might seem expensive, but it works out quite economical as you can use it to travel all around Japan (it doesn't work on the Tokyo subways though). A good plan would be arrive in Japan, spend a few days looking around Tokyo, then activate the pass (assuming you got a 2 week pass) and use it to travel all around Japan ! It can even be used on some Shinkansen trains. I did this once before, and I'm saving to visit again.

zoji rushi Lol that's true Though there are some words where there's no kanji, or the kanji deviates too much from Chinese
@seifer93
@seifer93 7 лет назад
Hmm, it depends. While Kanji are traditional Chinese characters and often share similar meaning, their associated pronunciation would be completely different. If a Chinese speaker only knows a station's pronunciation and not the spelling then the Kanji won't help them at all.
@saltag
@saltag 7 лет назад
The Palmtop Tiger ik...I'm Chinese, lol Not all kanji are trad. Chinese, Japan has gone through some simplifications too during the mid-20th century, like mainland China. Also, many of the characters don't mean what they mean in Chinese anymore, or they have simply invented their own characters(like chu nom) It's nice you brought up the pronunciation, because linguists actually study older Chinese pronunciations using Japanese kanji pronunciations (many of them have multiple pronunciations, as explained later), Korean, and chu nom, because their pronunciations of Chinese characters sometimes came from different time periods of China. Especially kanji pronunciations, a character may have entered Japan at multiple different time periods through different sources, thus having multiple pronunciations(Han漢音 for character pronunciations from the Tang dynasty through Japanese scholars, Tang唐音 for character pronunciations from the South Song dynasty till the Qing dynasty through merchants and buddhists monks). A lot of kanji are also pronounced with more than 1 syllables, as opposed to 1 syllable per word in Chinese Just realized this is probably on Wikipedia, lol, rip.
@seifer93
@seifer93 7 лет назад
***** My comment was actually meant for Zoji. I'm sorry that I didn't make that clear. I appreciate your insight as a native Chinese speaker. I've only formally studied Chinese for about a year, so my understanding of it is still elementary. I'm always happy to get lectured about the Chinese language and expand my knowledge, so thanks for that.

Life Where I'm From X drink water, not tea or any other coloured or sweet drinks and drink a lot of it (water I mean) as if u drink any other drink than water u need to drink water twice of the amount of those beverages (I've read it on a book called water detox) so there will not be any sediments of those drinks in your kidney... also use lipbalm or mentholatum for your chapped lips..hope that helped 😀

As someone who has worked briefly in Japan, I got to experience this first-hand and this really makes me miss it. I had my watch set to the JR clocks and most trains showed up within 10-15 seconds of the scheduled next train, it was amazing for planning routes. Someone may see how clean and bright these stations and train cars are in the video and think it's just the camera or post-processing, but they really are that well kept; I haven't seen public transportation anywhere else like it in the world. The only downside is the cost of routes (for instance, Seoul's public transportation is about a 1/4 of the cost). [This is not to downplay your videography, it quite fantastic, especially the stabilization] The part about "looking like a slob" made me laugh, I felt under-dressed to get on a SUBWAY on multiple occasions. I also found it pretty entertaining how much you featured the drinks -- I took pictures of every drink I bought and put it in a Facebook album.

The subway systems of Hong Kong (relatively older) and most major Chinese cities (relatively newer) are all clean and orderly. The people even line up on the sides for those getting off too. I've never actually been on the LA Metro, but I think it's comparable. And as for Seoul, you can tell us about that. So no, the strict timeliness is almost unique to Japan, but the cleanliness certainly is not.

There is a theater operated by Shiki Theater Company near Oimachi Station. The Little Mermaid musical is being performed there. That is why "Under the Sea" is used as the station melody.

This mini-documentary is simply A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! One of the best on Tokyo metro I have ever seen. I like you decided to show also small towns outside of the capital city. I think I will watch this video over and over again!

man after taking the bullet train from osaka to fuji (climbed mt. fuji, that was painful as hell, don't recommend it, good pictures though) then to tokyo station, i walked out of that tokyo station building (the brown building) at like midnight really tired and was just blown away by the sight of all those tall buildings and all the lights surrounding tokyo station, felt unreal and loved the architecture of the tokyo station. shimbashi station was a bit hard to navigate when i was trying to visit odaiba. lastly loved the train system and riding it everyday, best part was prob all the beautiful ladies i saw along the way, sadly i haven't learned the language yet. great vid

Love this episode you made, its like traveling with you in real time. Very nice ambient music and your voice over narration is always great, very clear in explaining your discoveries. I also like the slow pace style, breaks from narrations, so we can also absorb place and life :) Although, I've been to japan many times, but still enjoy watching your videos!

mate, this is a bloody awesome video. I'm glad you went to Yokohama, and didn't cut back on the secenes - it's relaxing to watch and beats the rubbish on T.V. I used to commute from Saitama to there everyday for work, so brings back memories, I love the train system there. Looking forward to returning one day - keep up the great videos!

Toronto subway was built some 40 years ago with 56km line and the people used to proud of it. Now the same subway is 70km long, and delays all the time. The politicians did nothing to improve in the past 40 years. Bad planning.
