Lessons learned in 17 years of marriage: 1. I don't have a Simon - Martina has a David. :) 2. Don't depend on the other person to make you happy. Instead, do your best to put each other first and focus on making life a little easier for your partner. 3. Never, ever assume that any action is done maliciously. Anytime you get frustrated or angry at your partner, remember that they are, in fact, your PARTNER. Your teammate. Teammates don't sabotage each other, so in all likelihood your partner wasn't *trying* to make you mad. Take the time to clarify their words, or figure out the reasoning behind their actions. It might still annoy you but at least you'll know it's not intentional. :D 4. Sometimes the problem is you. Being in a healthy relationship takes a lot of self-reflection and more than a little humility, and it's totally possible that you are the one who is wrong in an argument. Be able to admit it.

Thank you for talking about relationships and how "soul mates" are a unrealistic and toxic idea glamorized in the media. I have been with my girlfriend for about 8 years and it almost feels offensive that people think we are soul mates. We have gone through so much together, we understand and love each other but it was a process. We find that people say we're "lucky" because we found each other and don't have to put in work in our relationship like everyone else. I see it in a lot of my friends that break up with people or get mad over the smallest things and aren't willing to sit down and talk about their issues and come to a conclusion. Im not saying stay with someone no matter what and live unhappily. But it just seems people dont come to a common ground and just break up because they think their soul mate would just automatically understand them. Which is just not true.

I think what they say in this video is important, even more so for those coming here after the Instagram post. Humans are not perfect and we can't expect anything to last forever. We should all learn to put ourselves in other people's shoes. Relationships, romantic or not, always need communication to work. Do not see their relationship ending as a failure, they literally spend 15 years together and that is more than most people ever get to experience. Hope that in the long run, these are just fond memories for them and they can look back to see just how much they have grown. I hope you guys find happiness in whatever life bring next.

I don't know what happened, but the Simon we see now is just so different compared to the one we see here. His energy is just so alive in this video and he still has that spark. It's tough watching videos of him after they split because they seem like two completely different people. I'm sure so many things happened off camera, but maybe one day they'll be able to reconcile and be civil again. It must be so tough splitting up with someone who'd been your life partner for so many years-- especially with Martina's health problems, their many cross-continent moves and going through animal parenthood with their pets. I just wish both of them love and health in the future. Watching this video makes me very sad but hopefully, things look up for both of them. 💜
@pegleg2959
@pegleg2959 2 года назад
I couldn't disagree more. I've always found something off about their relationship, while Simon can sometimes be a bit big headed and over confident, I've always found Martina to be selfish and domineering. Pay attention to the videos that include both of them, you'll rarely find 30 seconds of footage in which Martina isn't talking over, interrupting, correcting or scalding Simon. It's constant. A decade of this would drive even a saint to distraction. Personally, I think Simon was unhappy, anxious, confused, and stressed back then, constantly making consessions to keep Martina happy, never ever daring to think about himself for fear of upsetting her. Baisically walking on egg shells constantly. Even in this video, they talk about consessesion 'each of them made', which baisically boiled down to Martina would still do what she wanted and force Simon to join in, and Simon just has to suck it up and not be so grumpy and 'selfish' about it. That Martina is allowed to buy dresses but Simon isn't allowed to have a PS5 without an argument. Now days, I think he seems calmer, more relaxed and more realistically confident. He can finally breathe.
@BoogerLeader
@BoogerLeader 2 года назад
@@pegleg2959 That's because Simon doesn't like being on camera, so she leads. And while I'm not saying either is mostly at fault, that particular detail you mention in videos is misguided and misinformed. The dynamic is the way it is on camera because Simon just doesn't enjoy it. He has said this many times, which is why she usually led the videos. As for the scolding and such, a lot of that was playful banter for the camera. Don't forget, both are performing for us.
@Tridentus
@Tridentus 2 года назад
@@pegleg2959 That's highly projecting of you. Not to say that either of them are faultless people, and that doesn't exist anyway.. Personally my read from the outside is the most inconvenient truth of the situation- and the reason it isn't mentioned and why it is inconvenient truth is because it doesn't do any good to dwell on it.. and yet that doesn't mean it's not the truth: That like she says here, Martina's EDS created a lot of guilt for her to push Simon away, Simon had the goal of doing what he saw as "the right thing" in sticking it out, this over years creates a spiral of negative emotion which eventually devolves both their state of mind to somewhere where there aren't any answers left anymore other than to separate. Sometimes life sucks, but like I said you shouldn't dwell on it- which is why people circle around and ignore it, and why there are all kinds of weird speculation surrounds this stuff- because it's a catch-22 of having a truth that shouldn't be dwelled on, yet when you don't call it what it is the other answers you come up with are all false.

@@bparker3670 that's something narcissists tend to do, they'll shift and project onto the other person, accusing them of being the narcissist. These other people saying that their relationship was perfect, that Martina was perfect, and basically that Simon is just completely evil and illogical, they're just being ridiculous. @wolfco47
@wolfco47 5 лет назад
I may know nothing about you or your situation, but I can tell you that if you have to have a legitimate surgery cholecystectomy (gallbladder) removal is very common and much less complicated that many other procedures. Chances are your team will be very experienced and your recovery will go smoothly! Both my husband and myself had our gallbladders removed (poor dietary choices ftw)! I'm an RN. I ended up in the ER at 2 AM in agonizing pain with unknown cause after almost 2 days inability to sleep. The hospital diagnosed it right quick. As soon as they verified the problem and suggested surgery, I was "Yes, immediately please!" The thing about the gallbladder is that if you don't do the surgical option then the underlying infection/blockage issues that cause such immense pain will just keep occurring over and over again. Yes, I do have some surface sensitivity from the scar tissue above one of the laparoscopic sites which makes bras really uncomfortable sometimes, but I'm also never awakened in the middle of the night in horrible pain either. You have to weigh the risks versus the benefits for the rest of your life.

OMG Martina when you were talking about denial with your Dad and lashing out. I feel that so hard! I was in denial about my Mom's cancer and I lashed out and have been mean to My Andrew. I have acted out in anxiety situations that embarrassed him...and he could have left...he could have walked away but he didn't. He is strong and amazing and he makes me better and we make each other better.....oh also I had a dream you all came here and we took you all to an amazing cafe we love called the Nikau Cave and Cafe here in New Zealand...that would be pretty cool. lol

You two direclty adressing that a relationship is something you constantly build and is about talking out differing thoughts has helped me try to do the same for my family, friends and others. This video makes it even harder to accept and makes you really wonder what could have happened that could have made such a grounded and committed couple decide to just walk away after all those years of hard work... Simon got it right, that loving Martina is what made him happy the most ❤️ I hope the time apart would bring them to the realization that what they had together is too precious to let go and find a way to be together again💔

Don't project your fantasies on real people. What happened? Life happened. People grow apart, there's no reason, nothing to realize, people fall out of love as fast as they fall in love. Is not a mystery, it doesn't go back. People are happy, but those memories they take them to their next relationship. They learn from the old mistakes and move on. It is called being an adult.

Then pop on top of that the seemingly break down of the world and their life in Japan, resulting in moving back to Canada during a pandemic. We only saw the best parts of their relationship and never saw it tested. Then it was tested so hard it broke. Maybe they both just changed too much in separate directions.

So glad you guys are talking about this. It's sooo important. I don't mind when people say "couple goals!" about others, or about us, as long as they realise that the goals should be working hard on a relationship, not just finding someone who magically fits you. Marriage is hard work. It's not about finding a soul mate... I don't believe in soul mates, I believe we make a choice every single day in our marriage to love, it's not some predestined fate. The hardest year of mine and Hugh's marriage was last year- first year of having a baby haha... cliche but it's true for us. We've been meaning to talk about it in a video so that people can have a realistic look at marriage, what it's really like. Marriage is so much hard work, but is also so rewarding. We've grown so much as people and as a couple, cultural differences don't just disappear but we have much better skills to deal with them now. Also from the beginning of our marriage we talked about gender inequality, sexism, privilege, prejudice, politics, we had big conversations. We have an ongoing conversation about how, especially when there is now a baby, the world is unfortunately set up to make it easier for men. So what can we do to try and help that gender inequality? How can we both be raising our son equally? Rather than defaulting to everything just falling to me as the wife and mother. I recommend couples to talk about this stuff from the beginning... not leaving it until there is a baby and you are sleep deprived and your husband has never even considered how difficult it for women. Lots of people find themselves in that position unfortunately, but I'm thankful that Hugh and I have a relationship where we talked about big things early, and still we have big conversations about the future and everything. Even last night we stayed up way later than we should have, but it was an important conversation to have about the future. I think Hugh has told you already, but Simon has definitely inspired Hugh to be a better husband too.

I remember the first time I watched this I was eagerly taking notes and trying to figure out things I could do to make my marriage peaceful. Now I'm sitting here going through a divorce. I just want to remind everyone listening that there are no amount of concessions you can make that will make someone stop abusing you. There is no way to make a marriage work if both people aren't committed to making the marriage better. I think this advice is great, but just be honest with yourself about the relationship you are in and get out immediately if you find it is unhealthy. ❤

I've been learning so much from you. I've been watching you for at least 6 years. Since then I went through a long relationship and started a new one a year ago. You showed me what's important in a relationship. Happiness isn't a normal/standard thing, there's NOBODY in this entire universe who has no flaws. So if you want to be happy, work for it and there is a reason a parter's called a partner. You have to work day by day together. Accept failures, hold your partner's hand when she/he is going through difficult times, laugh a lot together, talk about your feelings and don't expect your partner to do everything for you, you have to do just as much for him/her yourself.

I found myself focusing so much on the lows, and obsessing over them that I refused to acknowledge the things my partner has done for me. It's amazing to hear that relationships are never always sunshine and rainbows---that issues are inevitable and must be actively resolved by both partners. Your podcast has helped me remain positive and continues to convince me to be a better version of myself to everyone around me. The timing of your videos are impeccable and so relevant. I love Simon & Martina a lot, and it's painful to see them go through this. :( That said, I think there's 1 of 3 possibilities. 1. Similar to Jenna Marbles, Simon is taking a semi-hiatus from his internet presence. The situation may be different, but if this is the case, it 100% makes sense why he hasn't appeared in more than two or three videos over the last several months,and in his latest "update" video he made, which to be fair, he mentioned that he experienced a few big traumas, which combined with COVID-19 stuff, would seem to be enough to make him want to take sabbatical from social media. 2. Simon & Martina have decided that they have dominated each other's lives far too much, and while it may sometimes work out in non-individualist cultures, perhaps coming back to Canada and being literally stuck together 24/7 made them realize just how little independence they had from one another, so they're just experimenting by living more separate, independent lives for now. 3. They are doing a trial separation, possibly still living together, but giving space and being non-judgemental. They aren't certain about it yet, but even psychologists and counselors recommend that a struggling couple NEVER just outright divorce after some arguments and fights. If the desire to separate remains after a set period of time, they may go ahead and do it. Whatever the case may be, there's definitely something going on, as they haven't been in the same video for several months now, which is the most telling piece. So it's either 1. Simon's checking out of the internet more or less for mental health (which he sort of claimed recently). 2. Their relationship is struggling and either they are practicing being independent from one another, or 3. This is indeed a trial semi-separation.

TMI: When I first started watching you guys years ago I was in a long term relationship, and I enjoyed seeing another couple interact like how me and my boyfriend did. It gave me a lot of hope. The last year and half since the breakup have been hard. I don't believe in soulmates, but I think some corner of me believed we were, after everything; we survived my suicidal years, his year working on the other side of Canada, parental crises. But when my depression turned numb instead of emotional, everything fell apart. I think that unconscious soulmate belief really messed me up. A couple days ago I found myself smiling wistfully as I watched one of your videos, a little in pain thinking about my dreams of travelling with someone understanding by my side, and that I've put to bed. I still love love, but just don't have a real belief that I'd find someone with that balance of loving me as I am and understanding that we'll become new people together. When people think of you guys as the ideal, I wonder if they see a unit, or two separate people. When you said, "We created each other, for each other," that really sums up so much. What we're seeing is the product of a relationship - but also the product of two people - after over ten years of work; something forged, not just come together. I think what I'm trying to say is, thank you. Thank you for reminding me that relationships are a process of mutual growing together and being on each other's team. I think in the scramble of forming my own identity again, I forgot that.

I'm so so so happy that you talk about growing together and trying to work as a team! So many people seem to have an issue with immediately getting defensive rather than listening and trying to understand where someone might be coming from and it only hinders, both romantic and platonic, relationships I'm now in the best relationship I've ever been in because they're the first person to work with me rather than against me whenever I would bring up things I felt needed adjusting, and equally they will tell me if I'm lacking somewhere too (also the first to fully accept my disability and help me on my high pain days vs leave me to suffer by myself)! This has meant we actually almost never bicker anymore, we find out what is wrong and try and fix it in a calm way asap, which means we both feel far more emotionally secure (obviously we worked towards this!). You guys are such a huge inspiration, I'm always excited for your videos. Keep it going! 💖
