Here is a Japan travel guide on some of the tourist traps in Tokyo and some places you could avoid in Tokyo. I hope the japan travel tips and advice gives you a heads up before travelling to Japan and makes your trip a smoother one! :)
Places mentioned in order:
TOKYO TOWER
Option: Instead of paying to go up the tower, enjoy Tokyo Tower from the surroundings
- Shiba Park (Shiba koen)
- Zozoji Temple
or go up other places for free views of Tokyo
- Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (in Shinjuku)
- Carette Shiodome
- Bunkyo Civic Center
- Carrot Tower (in Sangenjaya)
HARAJUKU TAKESHITADORI
Option: Check out the back streets, hidden paths and traditional places
- Brahms Path
- Harajuku Street (Back streets with vintage shops, second hand shops, hipster hangouts etc)
- Tokyu Plaza Rooftop
- Meiji Shrine
- Yoyogi Park
SKY TREE
Option: Look at sky tree from other view points and take a short 15 minute stroll to Asakusa
- Solamachi 30th Floor
- Asakusa
GOLDEN GAI DRINKING ALLEY
Option: Instead of paying the high table charge, check out local Japanese yokocho (back alleys filled with tiny bars and restaurants)
- Shibuya Nombei Yokocho
- Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho
- Ebisu Yokocho
- Sangenjaya Chitai Yokocho
- Yurakucho Sanchoku Inshokugai
Phewwww... that was a lot to write haha, if you read up to here - you are the BEST!! Leave me a comment with your favourite emoji!
See you guys soon in my next videoooooo!!

If you go to sky tree during the 2-3 last hours before closing theres practically nobody around. Although you might be missing the ultimate sunset view, the city skyline at night is still beautiful!!

Kat Nguyen, I agree. me and my friend visite the Sky Tree at almost 2 hours before the closing. We were able to go up w/o the lines.

I will say "watch the weather forecast" when you go to observatories lol. I made the mistake of going to the metropolitan government building on an extremely overcast day and the cloud cover began at the level of the observatory. We couldnt see far into the distance that day at all.

One of the first mainstream vids that gives more than the typical Tokyo but rather has some decent info, and shows proper alternative locations while still avoiding the harsher realities of #tokyolife. Well done. we need more like this, still middle of the road, accessible to the average common tourist, but showing more parts of the city that actually are worth visiting.

Tokyo metro gov. building is good but the view @ Tokyo tower is much better since you get to see the bay and Tokyo. trust me. Skytree tower view isn't great as it is too far east of Tokyo. but yea go to them all to see different parts of the megacity. 👍👍 tokyu plaza rooftop is a mad chillout place, they have Starbucks there too. when I'm bored I go there to relax on the rooftop ^^ Tokyo dome city is a cool place as it has a roller coaster around the shopping centre and other rides. ikebukuro has a nice aquarium on top of a building (sunshine city). could add more but hey.

There are a lot of tourists. But you have to realize that very few attractions in Tokyo are really meant for international tourists... One of the most famous cities in the world and how many people know that even Tokyo Tower exists? You look at Harajuku or Akihabara or Shibuya or Shinjuku and you can see a lot of tourists... but the reality is these are still basically just normal districts with normal shopping, etc. The only more or less true tourist district (tourist upcharge on most stuff despite equal or inferior quality)I can think of is Odaiba... and even that's still almost completely targeting Japanese people. Basically, the point is most people at all these places are still Japanese. And probably not even Japanese tourists. They're just people going about their business, or having fun on a day off. Of course, stuff like towers you pay to go up are basically the epitome of a tourist trap, but overall I just don't get that feeling as much in Japan as most places.

Maybe I didn’t see the right parts of Akihabara but I preferred Nakano broadway. You get a lot more of the local experience and there’s still anime centered shops (since that’s why most visit Akihabara as a tourist). If you intend on visiting- get a 7-11 meal because they’re so much better than the American ones!

I did like Nakano as well. Akiba was pretty fun and I enjoyed both. I feel like with Akiba you really have to search those buildings for shops you like. I found a music store with tons of old CD's in the 5th floor of some random building in Akiba and that place was awesome. Nakano is much more accessible though.

(obviously they’ll try to charge foreigners more) So if the prices are displayed in the window already, this scenario can’t happen. Idk if charging foreigners more is a big thing in Japan tho it’s definitely a big thing in China so that’d be my guess.

Great video and I like that you offered suggestions and visuals of where to go instead of the touristy overpriced places. I am planning a trip to Tokyo, Kyoto, Uji area and maybe Sapporo. If you think that was crowded at Harajuku when you filmed your walk through, try that on a Sunday around 1pm. You were there when it was maybe at 20%. On a Sunday at 1pm it will be almost impassable. From the west end of the street looking down, it will look like a wall to wall carpet of heads. FYI, makes for an amusing picture.

90 to 100 minutes for a ride in disneysea isn’t that bad lmao especally if you know how to use the fastpass system, but the biggest trap is probably the merchandise stores just after the gates because you can find better and more quiet stores inside the park

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I was actually underwhelmed by Mandrake in Akihabara. I would say that Nakano Broadway had more interesting anime goods that are older. If you want recent anime goods, then shops like Animate around Akihabara are good.
@jamiek.2190
@jamiek.2190 7 лет назад
I think it depends on what you're looking for? Mandrake in Shibuya is really good for doujinshi or older publications. I've never been to the one in Akihabara, but like you said, if you want affordable and older anime merch, Nakano Broadway is great. (Plus the giant rainbow ice cream there is a must!)

I went to Tokyo last summer and I agree when places are super crowded it can be annoying and take away from the experience but I think in some cases you just gotta do it! (and try and go at a quieter time if you can) I thought the view from sky tree was unmissable, and the whole shopping mall area was cool..I was lucky enough to avoid those huge queues somehow! (But I went we a kind of tour group and I think we had a fast pass!) The view from Tokyo tower is less so but there’s a temple close by and there happened to be a haunted house thing there which was super fun! I agree that Takeshita Dori is a bit underwhelming; the back streets are where it's at! I think my advice for tourists who are only planning to go to Tokyo once, would be.. go to Tokyo tower area but don’t go up it. Go up skytree, if you really want to, but at a quieter time with fast pass and look down the backstreets of Takeshita Dori!! Also Cat Cafes aren't so great, most of the cats seem a lil sad and don't wanna play so maybe avoid them. (sorry this is so long lmao I hope someone finds this helpful)

I went to cat café that was placed a little outside of inner city, and it was the best cat café ever! There was kittens who wanted to play and cuddle with you, and they were all super cute! It was a small and cute café :) I also went to a cat cafe in Shinjuku and it was horrible. The cats were shy and grumpy and didn't want to cuddle, you weren't even allowed to hold them. You were at the other café :P

I definitely think one of the biggest tourist traps is what you mentioned as the SkyTree Tower. My experience was that there were so many people and long wait lines. The view was less than stellar and maybe the humid weather didn't make it any better. I definitely wished I went to more Temples in Tokyo. Love your videos. I have some videos of my trip to Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Okinawa on my youtube account. I wish I saw your videos before I went to Japan. Very helpful.

Wow a lot of views already. I've been to most of the tourist traps (just not the small bar streets in Tokyo). Also been to some of the alternative areas mentioned. Definitely going to have to check out the roof top lounge in Harajuku next time. Definitely agree that Sky Tree wasn't really worth the wait and price. I didn't mind the price of Tokyo Tower and the sky walk (where you step on clear platform) was pretty cool. I would add that some of the themed restaurants are overpriced and not worth it. I heard Maid Café aren't that great, but heard the Robot Café is good (except insanely expensive). I went to Kawaii Monster Café in Harajuku and thought that was cute and the food not bad (really pretty looking). There's also a show with it. Also went to Alcatraz ER theme café and that wasn't worth it. Another item I recommend are the animal cafes. I've been to several owl cafes, a bunny café, cat café, and a hedgehog café. Definitely recommend the Hedgehog café (it's in Rippongi). I recommend Owl Village café in Harajuku (not the one of the busy main street but the one facing the Harajuku station.

Themed restaurants are what they are. They're basically always going to be super expensive. It's a shame that Alcatraz ER doesn't seem to be very good- thematically, it seems like it could really work. Robot Restaurant seems to be love it or hate it, and of all things, is probably the closest to a tourist trap. It's pretty much designed and advertised for foreigners to go to that. Foreigners often mention it (with again, a very positive, or not particularly, review), but I don't think I've ever heard a Japanese person (that wasn't working at a hostel or something) talk about it. On the other hand, while @home and maidreaming in particular seem to draw foreigners by reputation, I still can't help but think that maid cafes are designed with Japanese clientele in mind. They're expensive, but the food is super cute, and if you get the right stuff, more or less filling. I've been once, a long time ago... and maybe I'd be up for going again, eventually, haha. I didn't have sky high expectations- I just wanted the weird experience. Service was excellent, and everything else passable. Price, not that terrible, but beyond my usual means. lol

I'm 99% sure I went to that roof top lounge in June '17 and it was insanely crowded. It's right across from a Starbucks. It might be empty in weather when one wants to wear a heavy jacket, but if it's warm it's going to be popular.
