My favourite skater of all time -- no one could touch him for the poetry and drama of some of his Pagliacci performances. I never cared about the flashiness of jumps, only his innovative grace and poetry... RIP, beautiful dancer...

@@meadowlarkascending I will always remember him for his originality. One of my all time favorites. Some of the incredible moves he does are pretty much “ho hum” for today’s quadhopping crowd, but they were extraordinary and innovative at the time. Such a talented, talented and humble guy. His paintings were exceptionally beautiful, too.

Toller Cranston, a Skater's skater. One man who put skating on the map and got people to watch, even those who watched and denied it. Loved this man's skating. He was a joy to watch. So what if he did not get Gold in a medal. He demonstrated Gold always. Look at the marks they tell the story, biased as hell. Thank you Toller for the joy you have given so many. He was stunning but unfortunately a poor showing in figures (7th) cost him any chance of winning. He still should have won silver even with the figures. Kovalev was 3rd in figures but had very bad short and long programs and was held up.
@npe1
@npe1 7 лет назад
I agree that Toller should have won the silver in Innsbruck 1976, in fact I would not even put Kovalev on the podium as I think Jan Hoffmann should have got the bronze. So my result would have been: 1. Curry 2. Cranston 3. Hoffman 4. Volkov 5. Kovalev - I might have even had Kovalev lower because I thought both Kubika and Santee were better in the long. I put Kovalev about 10th in the long!
@morlavader5454
@morlavader5454 7 лет назад
Kubika was probably too far behind in figures and he didnt even have a good short (Kovalev didnt either) so he would have never beaten him overall. He did atleast beat Kovalev in the LP. Yes though Cranston and Hoffmann both should have beaten Kovalev overall without question. He did not deserve a medal in this event of any kind.

American girl here, but I want a Canadian man to finally win the Olympic gold. There have been so many engaging, superb Canadian runners up. Canada seems to have a lot of up and comers. I love watching skaters from all countries but I want a Canadian man to finally win gold. Oh, Mr. Orser. Had you just not awkwardly landed that triple flip & doubled that triple axel….but you’re probably the greatest skating coach on the planet. Surely that counts for something. Bless your heart, the pressure on you in 1988 must have been enormous. I would have taken one edge on the ice and collapsed. You have done so much good for the world of ice skating!

@B___T985
@B___T985 8 лет назад
Oh yes I agree, Jason Brown is a very interesting skater to watch! I always thought he was smart for omitting the quad when he wasn't comfortable doing it. Others attempt to do it and fall, which just ruins the flow of the program, regardless of the higher points they may receive for trying it.*****

Toller was very good but I'm afraid he was not in the same class as John Curry.John Curry never sacrificed position for anything and there were times when Toller looked untidy and some of his more extreme positions were frankly ugly. Even here at 0.47 Toller almost stops after landing his triple loop and drops his arms - no flow whatsoever.

Your comments are spot on. Was the triple loop planned at that spot, I wonder? It looked like he threw it in there because of the flubbed triple toe loop a few seconds earlier, and perhaps that's why it looked rather unfinished.
