I thought Tolstoy was the only anarcho-christian ever, but I became friend with the owner of my local used bookstore and found another. These rare creatures are fascinating to study. "Suffering is good" that made many nietzschian alarms to go wild in my head.

It is a preference to suffer yourself rather than harm an other. So much to think about in this work! Thanks SS!

8:50 is such a profound point and why I think that, actually, secularism is the logical result of Christianity: in the sense that Christianity is completely against dominating other people by itself. I think that tension has been playing out and is the reason why "Christendom" ultimately failed as a power structure, since people slowly had to realize that the two (hierarchical power and Christianity) were exclusive at the fundamental level. Anyways, this is a great video. I first realized Tolstoy's strong yet subtle religious opinions at the end of Ana Karenina. I look forward to reading this book now that you have explained it so well! Thanks,.

"Abstinence and poverty!" preached the serf-owning fief lord with 13 children. 😂Yeah in case you can't tell, I pretty much detest Tolstoy, both as an author and as a thinker. (Did enjoy the vid, tho!) After his crisis of conscience he dove off into those rather outre religious beliefs of his and never looked back. Also, his positions are based on his own personal interpretation of Scripture, which I think is disputable. I'll concede he probably had some good ideas, but he was fairly dogmatic and not too prone to questioning, and he never fails to offput me. However, if you're interested, you might like the book The Last Station; it's a historical novel chronicling Tolstoy's final days leading up to his dash through the snow. You might enjoy it if you're a Tolstoy fan. 😊

I need to check this out and What I Believe too. Tolstoy can do no wrong in my book. Well, Tolstoy on Shakespeare kinda shocked me a little. For a guy whose works have so much in common with Shakespeare's, it was hard to believe that Tolstoy has such a strong dislike of Shakespeare.

You won't regret the read. It's awesome that Tolstoy had the courage and fortitude 😎

He didn’t hate Shakespeare. He just couldn’t get why people thought he was so the great. The epitome of English literature.

Great video, Noah. I love this book. If you call yourself a Christian it’s hard to argue with

Thanks Jim! There is so much to chew on, how he examines going against the impulse towards non-violence as trance-like self deception. He was one smart cookie
