Somewhere in Kitsap county I watched a horse team help with thinning a dense woods. I was researching working horses for my book, Secrets Lost. The homesteaders must have used horses like these to clear the land for farming.

Man understands his horses!! They even start to struggle, he shuts it down and makes it easier for them.

I like the way you used a log as a roller to get it started, There are no problems only solutions. A good Team.

I knew and worked with this guy for decades. The naysayers don't know what they are talking about. He did an excellent job logging with his many teams and he worshipped his horses, and treated them the best. And that,is no shit.

I like and admire the way you all work together. Takes good horses trained well to do that. Your expertise at work is really nice to see. That's how most of it used to be done in our part of the country, 50 years ago.

Hard working trio doing an honest day's work... I'm a 'tree hugger' myself and yet do not object to such a natural way to do logging. At this pace, ould take a long time to take the trees off the land, and give lots of time for others to grow up to replace them

This is EXACTLY what these horses were bred for, pulling. Target the racing industry if you want to target horse cruelty. These are heavy, work horses, with thick bones, strong backs, and they actually love to pull, it's in their blood.

It will all come back to this soon. A truck would likely not be able to pull that one log flat like that. I love my home made logging arch, less rock in the wood and damage to the environment. However it doesn't take long for nature to take it all back either way.

pick the racing horse industry and they do that garbage. saw the harness racing it was a joke. this is great stuff with the horses, anyone complaining is welcome to go get a team and show theyre way works better. odds are they'll end up doing the same as these guys. if they can stick it out.

I watched this team work in a forest where no other equipment could go, and don't worry, they got plenty of rest after each big haul, way more rest than their owner got. Then I put this video on RU-vid so my 84 year-old Uncle could see a team like my Granddad (his dad) had. By the time I was born, Granddad had a John Deere, but I enjoyed his photos and stories of his talented team never ended. There is no doubt in my mind, they LOVED working. I wish going to the office could be as rewarding.

seems to me that whole operation would go a lot smother with a log arch

He wasn't pulling on the reins. He was pulling on the chain attached to the rigging.

Very good solution for this big (too big?) log at 4:13!!! BUT: I would like to see, how this log finally got to the final place. I guess, that was a horrortrip for the horses. Is that necessary? 4:30 ... very nasty to look at ... a bit more patience or just a break would help ... 5:00 ... not at all the right place to stand at!!! In general: Why don't you simply use a logging cart !?

damijan72, Seriously? 4:30 isn't nasty to look at. You show your ingornance toward pulling/working horses by that statement. If you wanna get on a soap box about something why don't you target the Saddlebred industry who keeps their horses in dark stalls all day with no turnout and cut the nerves of the tails so they cant lower them. These horses love what they are doing! They are bred for it.Not slavery is a way life. Log arch = polution and causes more damage to the forest than needed.

Not so awsome... If they used three then it would be easier.. Instead working the ()*&*0 out of them and when they are broken down most... not all ship them to the slaughter houses ... disgusting... I rescue them from Kill pens. Take care of your horses to the end man.. don't ship them.

+Pj Ploss Doesn't that seem a little impractical for log skidding through the forest? I'm sure the trees don't bring themselves to the roadside.
