He’s a brilliant guy. People don’t realize what a musical genius Mr. Bailey is. He’s a very down to earth guy and his music of the ‘80s is still magical today. Just brilliant.
I certainly recognise his genius. Tom is one of the musical greats, in my book, and the Thompson Twins are one of the best bands of the 1980s. Tom has an incredible musical ear, and an ability to create and arrange different sounds and musical motifs in such an intelligent and original way. Into The Gap is a masterful album that will stand the test of time, and songs such as Hold Me Now and Doctor! Doctor! will be with us always. The production on these tracks is perfectiob, and could not be bettered, in my opinion. 👌🎶🎸🎹
Tom Bailey's appeal is his humility. In a business of obnoxious egotistical jerks Tom stands out as one who recognizes his talent yet is modest enough to not flaunt it. Tom Bailey always was the "Thompson Twins" and without his gift the band would have never went anywhere.
Tom is certainly modest. We met NZ band stellar* backstage and we were talking to drummer Andrew. He told us you know Tom has sold all these millions of records but he never really talks about his success. He's modest? I asked. . Very modest Andtew replied.
Nah, he might have been the musical creativity but he needed Alannah as inspiration and artistic flair and both of them needed Joe Leeway to balance things out. If you ever listen to Big Trash or Close to the bone...actually dont listen to either one of those. Pretend they never happened. they needed Joe!
@@voiceofraisin3778 they did have a well known three way chemistry and Tom and Joe did add something to the band. Alannah may have slated Close To The Bone in the past but Perfect Day is just that perfect. The dub mix of Get That Love although not on the album is awesome and I love Big Trash. Alannah seems to have no interest in getting back with the band and that's fair enough she's moved on and is doing other things. But when talking about Tom's live set up now with female backing musicians she talks like they are imposters. She says that nostalgia is overrated. I said to her on Twitter I've had some amazing times traveling around to Tom's gigs and meeting fans. She replied I'm glad you've had a good time but it's not the real thing baby. Well seeing as you have no interest in coming back to the band it's as close to the real thing as I'm going to get so I'll take it. What am I supposed to do? Not go to the gigs because she's not on the line-up. And Tom's new musicians play really well. There isn't a Thompson Twins album I don't like. I just like some others more.
I have to say. I have always loved the band.. I named my Maine Coon cat Tom Bailey! I also dyed his tail Burgundy.. What else can I say? Tom Bailey? Can I say anything else...... ❤️
We had the best music and musicians back in 80s. Growing up in the 80s was awesome experience in America. Thanks for the soundtrack to our lives. Cheers.
I was a night club DJ when this song came out. It never failed to crowd the dance floor. Knowing now how it came to be makes it all the more singular. Well done, Thompson Twins.
This was the night club dance tune? Don’t get me wrong, It was a great song in 1984. I was in college during those years and I don’t remember this being played too much is an upbeat dance young. I just remembered being in heavy rotation on MTV, and on radio stations. It may be decent background music before the party really starts hoping.
wow what a down to earth man nice to see , this song takes me immediately back to mtv , great tune man , be here as long as there is someone to listen to it peace t. d .
I met Tom with his family briefly at a concert in in San Diego Howard Jones there too.. my wife was frantically looking for some seats earlier, when this guy says hey mate Wait a minute! and goes out of his way to help us out, and pulls 2 seats out from his party! yep what a great heart Tom Bailey!
Perhaps not the first 80's band name off the top of some of our heads, but for me and a few of you Xers, there cannot be a complete 80's without Thompson Twins. It isn't just the synth pop. Nor just the drum machine. It's the package that is TT. The real percussion, the harmony, the bass playing, the baggy clothes, the cassettes, the pin-back buttons, the album art, the videos. And lyrics that span quite a wide range of topics, from detectives to doctors, from east to west, from records to "don't take that, take this", etc, etc.
It's funny how the Twins have always down-played their success and its influence on fans over time. They've always said that they never deserved their success and there have always been a ton of haters, including fellow musicians from their own genre. I've always believed that the Thompson Twins were...and still are...way under-appreciated and not given nearly enough respect. I've always loved their music and a song like "Hold Me Now" has stood the test of time long after the majority of their haters have had their own music drift away into obscurity.
Haters didn't exist in the '80's. We had to wait for the internet for that. Now we have a troll for president. In the '80's we had an actual actor. Not a wannabe.
I know this is an oldish comment but it resonated with me as I feel the same..I also think the exact same words could be said about Deacon Blue, another band I'm a huge fan of...
Wherever you are, Tom...I had a major crush on you in my 20's (even had my hair cut like yours)....so glad you're getting on well. Your music always made me upbeat, & I loved the lyrics and message. Much love to you.
Thank you, Tom! Without your brilliance and ability - not to mention the band members playing with you - you have encompassed the 1980's genre in a single song!
Sheer Pop perfection that transcended pop music. The 80's was when musical ambition met new technology. Artists aspired to create with boldness and vision without sacrificing the craft of songwriting and legitimate musicianship.
It's nice to see him speak so positively of the music he wrote, I've seen other interviews where he said he was embarrassed by his songwriting and that Thompson Twins' hits of the '80s were pure trash. I think the arrangement, production, melodies, and lyrics of their songs were some of the best and cleverest to come out of that era and listen to them to this day.
You know how there's always somebody who gushes about how great a song is, and how they can listen to it over and over, and how they think it's one of the greatest things ever, and they wouldn't give it up for, like, the whole Beatles catalog? Well, I'm that guy when it comes to "Hold Me Now" by The Thompson Twins!
Hold Me Now is that song that I completely forgot about for 30 years and then suddenly remembered again accidentally when it was playing on the PA at a Target store. And holy shit ! Did have a sudden flashback ! It's been a wild ride since that day , as I have taken a deep dive trip down memory lane ever since. Born in 79 for reference.
I was 9 when this song came out, but my older brother and his friends would listen to this song all the time. he passed away, but even now when i listen to it it brings back such wonderful memories of us all just singing and dancing away to this wonderful song. Thanks Tom. :)
Its Wednesday April 7th 2021 And The Thompson Twins are Still good today ! They were a Part of 80s decade New Wave And My Favorite Song is "King for A Day" fan USA
I am from Colombia living in USA.... great memories from Bogota hearing Thomson Twins. It was my favorite group in the 80s and they are still today. Love their sound. In to the gap , my favorite song. I miss these guys🤩🤩
Mr Bailey...I thank you for such an anthem within my life..."Hold Me Now" is just pure magic and I absolutely love hearing it every time I listen to it...nothing makes me happier!
Saw TT live in Ottawa Canada Dec 85. OMD opened for them. What a show! I remember the TT had a keyboard playing robot. Ah the 80s. Kids today have no idea what they are missing (likely because they don’t look up from their phones).
The only haunting song you will ever hear that will last you a lifetime.....and bring tears to your eyes many years from now when you hear it again.....remember this forever! I know....I'm pushing 77..... Thank you Mr. Bailey and associates.
Saw Tom Bailey at the Tiv in Buckley a few years ago. He was excellent, and should really trade as The Thompson Twins anyway, as it’s hardly his fault the other two aren’t with him. He’s keeping those great songs alive. I love his honesty here and his attitude. What a good guy.
The Thompson Twins were incredibly innovative. I've akways enjoyed all of their music, even their last few albums, which Tom deemed an..."afterthought". A contractual fulfillment.(ie; "Big Trash"). A lot of those songs were very catchy and easy to listen to.
Hi, Tom thanks for everything. Your song is fantastic.I grew up with your song during my school years. Your song has given me a lot of sweet memory. Thamks.
That was februari 1984, when I got 15... But I got interested in the band after 'Lies', 'In the name of love' & 'Watching you (featuring Grace Jones if I remember correctly) and that was, I think, in the spring-summer of 1982....
Stumbled here...one of my favorite bands....loved the percussion instruments used. I've been resurrecting my vinyl collection on a Technics Sl-D1 with an old audio-technica PB33E (like a AT12XE) and recently bought a ATN12XE stylus but the first one just didn't bring out the sounds as expected...the replacement stylus after a while, started bringing out the instruments. My goto song to know if I'm hearing what I am supposed to hear is this song, particularly the first few bars, with what I think is a cabassa (could be a metal Güiro) and the hi-hat intro. I had the pleasure of seeing you guys in the 1980s in Miami...what a show. Thank you Update: Looking at the video it seems she is playing a metal Güiro...all this time I thought it was a cabassa
I got to see Tom Bailey in concert 2 years ago. Walked away with a new appreciation for him, you couldn't help but like his personality. It caused me to dig into some of his other music(Ya don't like today's music? dig up some other stuff of your 70's and 80's favorites) and now I really, really like "The Gap", "Sister Of Mercy", "Long Goodbye", and several others.
I've always liked this song, but as it is a song that my American girlfriend has on her phone and hearing this playing in her car when I was over there a years ago, it's become a song that makes me feel sad whenever I hear it. Isn't it strange how a song is able to evoke so many feelings and memories whenever you hear it. Thank you, Tom.
I was a massive TT fan in the mid 1980s; the only fan in my high school. I loved the remixes and extended versions. But then I decided to play it cool and ditched them after Joe Leeway left. I’m rediscovering them and amazed at how innovative they really were.
