I'm a land-locked retiree in Indiana, USA, who a few years ago was touched by the sea through my intense interest in the Napoleonic Wars, ship modeling and some very, very limited time aboard a square-rigger out of Nova Scotia. I have few regrets in life; it simply unfolded as it did linked to time and place. But watching these wonderful videos from someone so thoroughly immersed in sea and sail does give me a strong feeling of "I wish ...," that I would have easily traded the dirt between my toes for the wind in my hair. My only hope now is that, through the library I've accumulated and the models I've built, my grandchildren will know that off far distant shores there was a thing called the Great Age of Sail.

Thank you for this John. That is a beautiful sentiment. I bet your grandchildren love visiting their grand-dad, and long after you have joined us all in the final harbour, they will be showing your models to their friends as their horizons are broadened by your library. Another marvellous video delivered with enough twinkle in the eye and charm to keep us engaged. And yes, a can of corned beef is a very nice, old-fashioned thing, and it's good to be reminded of that in these darker times. Here's to the return of corned beef sarnies and Fray Bentos pies eaten at the tiller and sustaining the crew. Keep the wind in your face. Cheers!

Either that picture of you going upwind in that boat with 7 or 8 others wasn't you or it was taken so long ago that your hair wasn't white! The way you narrate you could make log cabins or chess pieces sound awesome and exciting. Your sailboat is absolutely gorgeous!. LOVE the fully battened main, love the cockpit layout, absolutely love the offset companionway, love the raised helm seats, the teak, the B&G instrumented dashboard, loved everything I could see, even you (as a sailor and teacher:). Many features of your boat are exactly what I want in my next boat. Great mind's think alike, and so do ours! 🤔😂 Thank you for taking the time to create edit and post your videos, we all know it's time consuming! The cool thing is, RU-vid in 200 years...your great great great great great great great grand children and other future people will be able to watch your videos! I wonder if Englanders will still have an English accent? I'm thinking most won't..all humans will sound the same, but they'll be speaking English at least! Wow I'm blabbing...sorry!

Wow , thank you for the years on videos/Programs, on you’re sailing adventure. You are blessed with the ability to vocalise your knowledge to none sailor as well as seasoned salty sea dogs. Iv sailed on occasion in the past and frightened my self stupid. Thank you to allow us to sail with you without the danger. Ps could you provide a dictionary for some of your terms as it takes awhile to have the terms be worked out. I have a Sparkman & Stephens design with a "Scheel keel" by Henry Scheel. I accepted this compromise because I live in a predominantly shallow area. The upwind behavior is similar to your Channel Cutter and it took me awhile to stop pinching up and stalling out. I really appreciate how you integrate modern technology such as your electronics with more traditional methods rather than being Puritanical. You demonstrate that the modern technology is complimentary to the traditional methods which affords more safety and convenience without being over reliant on the new technology.

The invention of the devil. Put runners on a mast and you make it vulnerable. Yet a lot of gaffers and some fractional bermudans do need them to a greater or lesser extent. Thank God for the pilot cutter. Goes like the wind and no runners! Those guys knew a thing or two! A video is a good idea but there are so many different types it's a tall order. I'll think on. Thanks for the input. Tom

Tom, At last. A sailing video that stresses relaxation! The Birmingham Navy would appreciate a sail trimming series please. Nothing fancy, just the basics for the cruising types. I'm fed up of explaining the vang and traveller and would like you to do a masterclass that I could point them to. There is a Portuguese chap GIULIETTA SAILING TEAM who does an excellent series that would be great if translated onto a heavier boat like yours

Tom on my old 54ft. VandeStadt cutter , Steel round bilged , 25 ton , Canvas main , heavy cotton Yankee & heavy canvas staysail, No winches all block and tackle ( Didn't have a lot of money when fitting her out )with a clean bottom would make 5kts in 8 kts to windward 45-50 Dg. on the wind , Loved surprising some of the lighter yachts as she would sail frew the holes with minimum loss of speed . great shot of the telltales on the main - Beautiful, little twist to keep the flow going . Great post , thanks `Oh electronics - Binocs & a 20 quid plastic sexton with an old towed log .

Hi! Your comment is really interesting! 54 ft boat should really have massive rig. How do you manage the main sheet in strong winds? Well, I mean, at what windspeed it is no longer possible to handle the staysail and mainsail singlehanded? And how about running backstays? It should be tricky, I guess? I never sails on a large boats (26 ft maximum), so I was really impressed when I heard a Pilot Cutter can be sailed by crew of two. So as you have an expirience of sailing 54ft cutter, could you please clarify this question? Thanks! English is not my first language, sorry for mistakes)

When I bought the boat it was stainless steel and was covered in comms domes. not my style, so I sold the domes on ebay, cladded the SS with teak and now I can rest my whisky glass on it when I'm on the quarter seat enjoying a sundowner at anchor. perfect. Tom

I hold a globe up and then say the moon is above the Atlantic. The Atlantic basin so the Caribbean, usa, western europe, etc the water will be sucking away from the globe, low tide. On the other side of the globe, the water will be sucking against the globe, high tide. Does that make sense?

A lot of the songs composed by Richard Wright, were made on sailboats that he had, he sailed a lot, for example the song "Wearing The Inside Out", that he called the "swan song" is about the Nautor Swan that he had until he died. Another sailor was Jack Bruce.

Thank tom, I sail a Deben 4 Tonner here in Western Australia. We get 20-25knts in the afternoon and a steepish chop. You go nowhere if you pinch her. Ease off a bit and off ya go. Tacking in the chop can be bit tricky though, by the time I get up into he wind she wants to stop and fall back off. Getting hull speed and then trying to pick the waves is the trick. It can be hit and miss though. I used to sail Fireballs so tacking the Deben is like: put the helm down, have a cup of tea, haul the jib across, point down a bit to get up to speed, bring her up. Proceed in accordance with previous orders. Maybe on the next tack I could make a corned dog sarnie instead of a cup of tea?

Good video, however it was a bit fast paced at beginning with terminology that would confuse many people as they will have no idea what your talking about. Jib and mainsail is not hard, telltales has another term I forget that is used a lot, the rest was enthusiastic but way over many people's head. I did enjoy the video view of your boat on the water( if you prefer yacht or ship still meant in best possible way) I find the real footage of being out on calm water without gale winds to be quite soothing. Is she Bermuda rig with less luff? Her sails look quite flat trimmed up it's why I ask. ( note I'm still not sure what luff is so hope I got term right. It's the "cup" of sail I think"

Hi Jacilynn. I didn't want to confuse with the terminology. It's all fairly simple once you know. The boat I was sailing on is Bermudan and the sails are trimmed like that because I'm going to windward. Luff is the front edge of the sail. Hope that helps. Maybe buy my book, 'The Complete Day Skipper' to help with the terms and learn how to sail. There's a comprehensive glossary in there. Cheers Tom

@@andrewparry1474 Yeah...we can search for terms and, no doubt, many have. However you didnt actually read my comment. Tom did. Ill just recap for you. It was about the pacing. I thought it was a little too fast with advanced terms that would loose most people. when it comes to boats of any type or size the terms/names used change from area to area, even inside the uk let alone the rest of world. This goes for parts of boats, design, sails, etc etc. Port, starboard, bow, stern even those change. Nothing is a given. As for sail design and terms...ehhh that is not so easy to get. Ive been searching and searching on this for awhile. Lots of books on how to sail, no so much on how to build one. Most of the info is diy "build it like this" not WHY it's built like this or how to design a good sail for your own boat design. Sails are not just flat flat, well unless your square rigged that is. There is a cup or bow built into the sail much line a plane wing is not just straight but has a double sloping curve to it. For sails this is referred to as "luff", at least that is what i have read so far. Kinda confusing to be honest as the term seems to change from story teller to story teller. And wikipedia is no help at all!
